View Full Version : Fish Biscuit and Strawberry Kiss
macainickle 02-06-2007, 01:29 AM In The Glass Ballerina ,Sawyer said Kate tasted like strawberries and she said he tasted like fish biscuits. Yet Kate also ate a fish biscuit after she supposedly ate strawberries ,so shouldn't she also taste like fish biscuits?
What are we supposed to get out of the fact that she ate strawberries?
We never see the Others give Kate any food or water. So where does she get that from?
We see them give Sawyer a lunchbox but not her.We see Juliet offer Sawyer water but not her.Sawyer's got a food and water source in his cage, but she doesn't seem to.
Do they give her food and water and we just don't see it or does she have to entirely rely on Sawyer for food?If they didn't at some point give her water shouldn't she be suffering from dehydration?
He says she taste like strawberries. But he supposedly doesn't know about the strawberries at breakfast and it has been a day or so .So why does she still taste like strawberries?
Here is what I have found as far as the symbolsim of strawberries.
They are the sign of perfect righteousness.A cure for depressive illnesses.Their presence is considered a sign of eternal salvation.
The 3 partitioned leaf stands for the Holy Trinity. The fruit pointed downward stands for drops of Christ blood. The five petal flower stands for his 5 wounds.
Strawberries oftened were seen in paintings of Mary and baby Jesus.
Strawberries were found near where Christ rose and therefore are a sign of continuous life.
Strawberries also represent youth.
(I'll post a link to the source I got this symbolism from so you can read more about it.)

I like all the strawberry research - I honestly didn't know all that cool info! It certainly fits in with these writers' visions of redemption and salvation, doesn't it?
Strawberry Letter 23 is pretty wild and out there. The lyrics sound like something written while on an acid trip.
One question .... you say Kate's number is 23. What are you referring to??? When was she numbered? Or, how is 23 related to her? I must have missed something. Either that or I'm forgetting something previously brought up - that tends to happen more and more with each passing year! :biglaugh:
pinkrose 02-07-2007, 10:53 AM Wasn't $23,000 the amount of the reward money given to the person who turned Kate in? That may be what macainickle is referring to. I think she even mentions it to Hurley after they blow the hatch door when she hears him chanting the numbers.
Cool Hand Locke 02-07-2007, 12:39 PM Or it could just be Sawyer turning on his southern charm....He could've said she tasted like anything (peaches, butterscotch, anything good-tasting)....
I really don't think it amounts to much else....Interesting research though...
ToutureMeSy 02-07-2007, 04:56 PM Hmmmmm, I bet Sawyer tastes like chocolate-covered strawberries...
Oh, sorry. I agree that Sawyer's strawberry comment is probably nothing specific, right up there with him calling her freckles-just his natural charm....
But I could be wrong.
Zoriah 02-07-2007, 05:47 PM We have no proof that she ate any strawberries. She would taste like fishbiscuits logically, after spending the night in the cage, with nothing to eat but those dry things, plus icky water from a pipe (if she got any). I don't know about you, but I don't taste like the chocolate I had yesterday morning when I've eaten since then and it's the next day.
My money is on Sawyer just paying her a compliment to make her feel good. And of course setting up her line back, showing that she knows she doesn't really taste that good. A nice bit of romantic banter to lighten the episode.
squid 02-07-2007, 05:50 PM Not sure, but I thought I saw a big ole' bowl of strawberries at the breakfast Kate had with Ben... where was that in the timeline with Sawyer's comment, how long before anyone know? Just curious
Zoriah 02-07-2007, 06:03 PM Kate wakes up, is forced to have a shower and put on a dress. She's taken to Ben's hut for a breakfast. We don't see her eat anything, although Ben does. The talk is brief and he gets up to leave. There was a promo shot on ABC which showed two guards about to grab Kate out of her chair.
She's taken to the cages. Sawyer throws her a fishbiscuit which she is shown eating as though she is very hungry and doesn't care it might be unappetising.
They stay there all day and overnight.
The next morning they are woken up to go to the worksite. Sawyer's given a lunchbox, which supposedly has their lunch in it to keep up their strength.
Then they are shown working hard and hauling rocks for most of the day. Who knows when the kiss comes. But the point is, we have lots of time between the meeting with Ben, and the kiss. And we also have fishbiscuits consumed, and presumably they also ate something in the morning or at 'lunch'.
We did not see Kate touch a single morsel of food on Ben's table, in fact I thought that was part of the point. She's upset, defiant and not wanting to play his game at all. Later she eats Sawyer's fishbiscuit like it's the first meal she got in a long time.
I don't even remember the strawberries being on the table, I doubt the average viewer would. I think someone had to post up a screencap to show it.
I believe it's just one of those over-analysed details which when you think about it, doesn't really make any story sense.
lost_in_sawyer 02-07-2007, 06:38 PM They're implying that we didnt see the whole conversation between Kate and Ben at breakfast. She obviously did eat the strawberries that were placed on the table, but becuase we didnt see it, we can assume there was more to the conversation that what we saw.
100%
the strawberries were very prominent on the table by the way...

thanks, I thought I remembered that, glad someone else noticed it too. I agree it could have the implication that more was said at breakfast, of course time will tell eventually. It's the kind of subtle clue I enjoy about this show, if it really is a clue...

zoriah,
thanks for clearing up the time intervals, that's pretty much what I remembered but it's been a while so it was a little fuzzy.
macainickle 02-07-2007, 09:51 PM I say that 23 is Kate's number because of the fact $23,000 was the reward for her arrest. There also seem to be other references to 23 surrounding Kate.

Zoriah 02-08-2007, 01:55 AM No probs Squid. :)
I don't think they were implying anything of that nature at all. I thought it was pretty clear that she didn't eat anything, especially with the way that she attacked the fish biscuit.
But your mileage may vary.
Michael Emerson (Ben) has already been quoted in some interview somewhere as saying that was all there was to the breakfast scene, there was nothing extra shot or edited out of any significance.
xpetri 02-28-2007, 02:59 PM Hilarious! Cool Hand Locke has it right though - Sawyer's a smooth operator.
