1. We all know they think they are good. By whose standards??: No one reasonable...kidnapping children etc...
2.Now we know why they think they are good. They brainwash them to think they are good and to follow the ways of the Others.
Obviously Carl was being brainwashed. In there it said Jacob loves you when yoiu read it fast. Did we ever figure out who Jacob was???
100%
according to the book a clockwork orange..they used the same brainwashin technique. I started a thread about that to discuss the similarities between the book and the Lost but I cannot find it...

Interesting idea, but on the brainwashing video it actually says 'God loves you as he loved Jacob.' Close but not quite the same...
I personally still reckon the other ARE actually good and they have their reasons!

The Tailies had no more right to those kids than the Others and the Others were in a better situation to take care of them. Therefore it was the Other's duty to take the kids. Danielle had killed all of her crew as soon as they showed signs of sickness. She made it clear in Maternity Ward that she would have killed Alex had she shown signs of an infection (even if she had a harmless infection like Aaron). It was the Other's duty to rescue Alex from her insane mother. We don't know yet why Walt was kidnapped (or why they waited so long to take him). Perhaps when we know we will say it was reasonable.
2.Now we know why they think they are good. They brainwash them to think they are good and to follow the ways of the Others.Maybe they are good because there are other Others who are really really bad. Maybe they feel they are good because their goals are altruistic and, like most societies, they feel their motives justify their actions.
Obviously Carl was being brainwashed. We don't know if Carl was being brainwashed. We don't know for sure what they were doing to him or why. And just because Alex likes him does not make Carl a good person. Who knows, if the kid lived in Texas, his punishment for the same transgression might have been hanging. All Ben:cool: did was make him look at flashing lights while dinner flowed into his arm. Let's not jump to conclusions.
The show runners have gone out of their way to make us fear the Others. How many times did they repeat that clip of Anna Lucia saying they were ANIMALS (and only because they were kidnapping people). Yes, Ethan was bad but there are bad people on both sides of our island fence. (Ethan might not have meant to kill Charlie and Smokey might have killed the guy on the beach. Every bone was broken -that sounds more like Eko's body and Smokies' MO.) There was someone in the previews who scared me a lot more than Ben.

You state a good point about the Others taking the kids to prevent physical harm...my addition to your thoughts...for Walt's case...being on a raft in the middle of the ocean nearing tsunami/typhoon season doesn't sound particularly safe......
In comparison to Danielle...Michael has kind of gone off the deep end in his obsession to get Walt off the island...near the end of last season I came to really despise Michael's character...and Danielle is beginning to be shown in a different (almost better) light...it's as if they've traded places mentally...I would really like to see some Danielle flashbacks...you know...before she was a crazy island lady...
