View Full Version : Ben and Edmund
pacejunkie 02-08-2007, 12:13 AM I'm interested in the similarities between Ben and Edmund Burke. Juliet seems to have a habit of hooking up with these brilliant men who are also, calculating, unethical and controlling. She couldnt break free of Edmund and ending up doing something that unwittingly led to his death to obtain her freedom and now here she is again. She istrapped on this island with Ben (with whom she has "a history") and she places his life in danger in an attempt to gain her freedom. Of course in the end she doesn't go through with it but she does kill Pickett. Not sure if that's a true redemption story yet but I find it interesting after Edmund that she would enter into a relationship with Ben. She seems to be repeating her mistakes again. Maybe she still lacks the self confidence to exist on her own and thinks she needs this powerful men to help her.
Funny too that both Juliet and Jack are reluctant leaders. Neither had the confidence to lead but seem to have leadership thrust upon them.

hmm.
penyours 02-08-2007, 12:22 AM Yup Edmund is very similar to Ben, it's not surprising that once Juliet was on the island that she would be attracted to Ben.
I like how Juliet and Jack are both reluctant leaders, and they are both being essentially forced to be doctors for the others.
jennylee27 02-08-2007, 12:26 AM My main reaction to Edmund was "Eww", she married that guy?!
Maybe with Ben she was trying to use the lesson she had learned with Edmund. Perhaps she thought that if he cared for her, he'd be more willing to let her go. She certainly is a lot more hardened now - I could see her pretending to love him so she could try to manipulate him.
I'm ready for Juliet flashback #2!
LostLaura 02-08-2007, 12:47 AM I had the same reaction Jenny. EW.
She apparently had low self-confidence pre-island. On the island, well she seems to be confident, yet she is constantly undermined and overpowered by Ben. Even on the freakin' operating table.
But for the record, we don't actually know what he said to her in there. She could still be lying.
But it's hard not to trust her once you've seen her FB, you know?
Amber 02-08-2007, 12:50 AM That is so strange.. I was just reading about the guy a few days ago. This is a famous quote of his:
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing."
Good men. ??? Doesn't that quote sound like something Ben would say?
annie_monica 02-08-2007, 12:50 AM I felt Eww too, but remember, he is her ex-husbamd, and probably went through a radical change...perhaps when business went its separate way?
October 02-08-2007, 12:57 AM Juliet does seem to fall pray to men who try to have power over her. However, both Ben and Edmund seem to want(wanterd) something from Juliet that has nothing to do with a romantic relationship. Edmund wanted to profit from Juliet's talents as a doctor and her research, and perhaps Ben wants(or was one of the main ones who wanted) the same.
ame en peine 02-08-2007, 01:38 AM "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing." That's one of my favorite quotes - even posted it here on the lage a time or two.. So when I heard Burke's name I did a double-take..
As for Juliet's continued bad choices in men - "those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it". She must have still been in a loop like most on the island, making the wrong choices.. But her confidence seems to have greatly improved as seen in the defiant book club outburst.

Oh yeah I am definitely excited about seeing the next Juliet FB, her backstory looks very deep.
HoardingHurley81 02-08-2007, 12:15 PM I got the feeling that this had something to do with it. Seems too easy just to say that Juliette and Benry's troubled past is simply because of a child they may or may not have had together. I am just speculating that Benry is Edmund Burke's brother and Ben is exacting some form of pennance on Juliette because of the bus crash by making her stay on the island. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it....

Why would he do that? She didn't cause the accident.

Or did she? These coincidences are more than just that....
