Yep, I like it when the flashbacks do "reversal" themes like the quote refers to. Another good example would be this season's Sun episode.

I noticed that repeated line too. They are going out of their way to show us another side of the people the Losties call the Others to show that they are just people with histories and personal stories and situation just like the Losties. Some are good, some are bad, some are worse, but they're all as individual as everyone else on the island.
