View Full Version : why is juliets last name still burke ...?
kpdjp 02-08-2007, 01:47 AM if she divorced her husband, edmund burke, why do people still refer to her as dr. burke? shouldn't she be using her own last name now? isn't it unusual for a divorcee to keep their husband's last name? i thought that was kind of strange...
other than that.. i thought elizabeth mitchell did an awesome job of going from timid and weak to strong and badass. the scene where her ex tells her to turn off the lights was a real heartbreaker
Save The Humans 02-08-2007, 01:50 AM Because her blackmailing ex wouldn't want the Burke name removed from Juliet's identity--not when it could bring EDMUND Burke prestige and glory via Juliet's research breakthroughs!
And, of course, once Edmund was dead, Juliet was whisked off to the Island by Mittelos. So there was no time to file legal papers to change her name.
Not that she goes by her last name on the Island, anyway!
Baileysdad 02-08-2007, 01:50 AM Actually..all divorced women I know keep their married name as they would have to go to court to change their name back to their maiden name. Once married..it becomes their legal name.

Court is not usually necessary, but I agree I don't know many who change back.
Not to mention that she is doctor and recognition of her name is more important than most, so why change?
Tricia 02-08-2007, 12:50 PM Seems that the divorce was pretty recent. Why else would she still be the next of kin too? He hadn't had time to change his paperwork either.
And yes, a lot of divorced women don't change their names back. My sister is on her 3rd last name:D
Timarie 02-08-2007, 12:58 PM I don't know many women that change it back. In Juliette's case it may be because her research is in that married name and it is what will be associated with her. With women with children, it is so that they continue to have the same name as their children. There are lots of reasons divorced women keep their married name. I find nothing unusual about Juliette keeping hers.
RodimusBen 02-08-2007, 01:08 PM It totally depends on the woman. My mom waited about eight years after the divorce before she changed it back. Just wasn't top priority.
Madge 02-08-2007, 05:18 PM Changing your name can be a real pain. I have a friend who uses the last name of ex-hubby #2 simply because she had changed her name so many times already.
Stripes 02-08-2007, 08:31 PM My sister got divorced about a year ago and kept her husband's name. The reason she kept it is because her maiden name is very ethnic and people constantly mispronounce and misspell it, while his is not, so it makes everyday life easier for her.
Doctor_Pjegice 02-08-2007, 08:46 PM I'm thinking it might have a lot to due with the fact that she is a doctor. Many women choose to keep whichever last name they have when they get their degree. It always looks good to have your name match the piece of paper hanging on the wall.
sjb121590 02-08-2007, 09:07 PM My mom got divorced and she wants to change her name, she just hasn't had time. And besides, like mentioned before, she may not have wanted to change it in the first place.

My wife is a doctor. Once she published under her maiden name it would be career suicide to change it. Strange but true. I was like, congratulations girlfriend on your paper and her lab partner just goes, Hope you won't mind her not changing her name, and I was all like, "whhuuuut?"

myothercarisflight815 02-09-2007, 12:03 AM Yes... it was a total pain to change my name when I got married to begin with... I happy to say that I'm happily married... but fiddling with your last name is a royal pain.
lostie1 02-09-2007, 12:11 AM It's only been the last 20 or 25 years that women began taking back their maiden names after divorce. Really, only the past 15 years that it has been common. In Michigan, a woman has the option to have her maiden name restored at the time the settlement papers are filed.
