View Full Version : Aldo
silveranswer 02-08-2007, 02:04 AM I looked up the name Aldo at http://tools.oxygen.com/babynamer/
. . .and got this: "This boy's name is used in Italian and Spanish. It corresponds to the English name Aldous."
so I looked up the meaning of Aldous and it is this: "This boy's name is used in English. Its source is ald, an Ancient Germanic word meaning 'Old.'"
SO clearly the Others have Age/Time issues. My guess is premature aging- that could explain a 26 year old with a 70 year old's womb.
HollywoodTate 02-08-2007, 02:08 AM that seems far fetched, i mean its just a small character.
i dont think they would hide something like that in the name of a small charater!
maybe they would...who knows
silveranswer 02-08-2007, 02:10 AM well, its definitely an unusual name, and Sawyer had an obvious reaction to it that accentuated it. . . it probably doesn't mean much, but I do think it is interesting that it means "old".

If someone introduced themself as Aldo it would grab a second on my attention too!
belwether 02-08-2007, 02:38 AM when i hear the name aldous i think of aldous huxley who wrote the famous sci/fi classic novel brave new world.
briar910 02-08-2007, 02:39 AM I think tptb have said before that every name is chosen for a reason. I would expect the same for this one, especially since it is so unusual.
erins 02-08-2007, 03:23 AM I think tptb have said before that every name is chosen for a reason. I would expect the same for this one, especially since it is so unusual.
I completely agree -- it is unusual. TPTB want us to investigate all the names and seemingly little details ... they said themselves they hide easter eggs all over.
kgosal 02-08-2007, 03:28 AM so i guess no one has heard of the popular shoe store named aldo??
no one from canada?
well that was the only thing i thought about when the name was mentioned...
don't think there is anything special there... the writers probably wanted to have some mention of the guy before kate was about to blow off his knee cap.
metallidevils 02-08-2007, 03:35 AM when i hear the name aldous i think of aldous huxley who wrote the famous sci/fi classic novel brave new world.
that's exactly what I thought too when i heard aldo
Deadshot 02-08-2007, 03:54 AM I think it refers to Aldous Huxley. Who of course wrote 'The Island' which is about a utopian society on an island named Pala.
hardliner86 02-08-2007, 04:18 AM I thought of Planet Of The Apes......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldo_%28Planet_of_the_Apes%29
Actually, first I thought of "Dirty Work" with Norm MacDonald and Aldo's Pizza, but then Apes.....
paradox 02-08-2007, 04:28 AM I think it refers to Aldous Huxley. Who of course wrote 'The Island' which is about a utopian society on an island named Pala.
That has to be it. I first thought of Aldo Leopold, which didn't make much sense, but knowing it corresponds to Aldous (with "The Island" which Pala Ferry clearly references, and his other utopian/distopian writings) seals it. I think naming a character Aldous would just be too blatant. :drowsy:
Life is just a fantasy - Aldo Nova
carodeluxe 02-08-2007, 10:19 AM In retrospect, the name could be a reference to one of two things -- environmental writer Aldo Leopold (we read his book "A Sand County Almanac" in high school environmental science class) or dystopian sci-fi writer Aldous Huxley ("Brave New World"). I'm sure this is being discussed somewhere, but I couldn't track a thread down for some reason.
The fact that Sawyer got the "Man, he has a dumb name" expression leads me to think it was something significant.
omgimsolost 02-08-2007, 10:22 AM I missed this character...who was it?
misti_is_lost 02-08-2007, 10:24 AM The guy reading "a brief history of time", who fell for the "wookie prisoner gag"...... BEST LINE OF SHOW
razzie33 02-08-2007, 10:27 AM I recognized him as Mac from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Bosshogg 02-08-2007, 10:35 AM Life is just a fantasy - Aldo Nova
you stole my line!
Snost_and_Lost 02-08-2007, 10:55 AM I think it refers to Aldous Huxley. Who of course wrote 'The Island' which is about a utopian society on an island named Pala.
my thoughts exactly
wetsprocket 02-08-2007, 10:59 AM i like the line of thought that the others have time/aging/fertility issues. in this episode we have:
-juliet as a fertility pioneer/genius and the lengths to which the others would go to secure her services
-the 28 year old with the womb of a 70 year old
and then in one scene we have:
-a character whose name means "old" AND who is reading "a BRIEF HISTORY of TIME" (even tho the book itself is about astro physics and whatnot).
they showed his reading fare for a reason...

Tarkus 02-08-2007, 11:05 AM The guy reading "a brief history of time", who fell for the "wookie prisoner gag"...... BEST LINE OF SHOW
Yeah, another Sawyer classic. Great line.
danmo 02-08-2007, 11:22 AM tptb have said that all the names do have meanings...who knows if it means "old" or a call back to the author
BOOYEAHachieved 02-08-2007, 11:25 AM Yeah, another Sawyer classic. Great line.
i watched this episode with 4 of my friends and we all busted out laughing the moment sawyer mustered that line. totally agree that this was the highlight of the show. screw all that brainwashing mythological mumbo jumbo and juliets back story (lol)... just give me some of those patented sawyer one liners and i'll be fine.
;)
I think the Aldo refers to Aldous Huxley who wrote Brave New World. That book was about reproductive technology, biological engineering and sleep learning among other things as they try to exist in a utopian society. He also wrote The Island which is pretty much the utopian society of BNW reversed. The book A Brief History of Time tries to explain many of science's mysteries in a simplistic form. Among the theories explained are those about time and gravity, 2 key players on the Lostie's Island. TPTB clearly gave us some important clues this episode using this 'minor' character to convey some of them.
Cool Hand Locke 02-08-2007, 02:05 PM I recognized him as Mac from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Hahaha...same here...
I was like "WTH?! Mac is surely gonna screw this up."

Let's not forget he also wrote "The Doors of Perception (from which the band The Doors took their name)," which dealt with his own experiences from taking mescaline, a psychoactive drug originally associated with brainwashing (such as Carl was undergoing). Huxley loved his drug themes.
island hottie 02-08-2007, 02:11 PM It's clearly a reference to Aldous Huxley and his work. There's no way, with all of the themes surrounding his novels, that is *isn't*.
middlenamewayne 02-09-2007, 10:06 AM that's exactly what I thought too when i heard aldo
Well, if it's a reference to either Aldo Cella or Aldo Nova, the show is definitely in trouble!
- mnw
(Although both of those names would fit into the same pop culture scenario as the LP collection from the ol' hatch...)
Tundra_Ice_Cold6477 02-09-2007, 10:29 AM Is it just me, or does the actor who plays Aldo (Rob McElhenney) look sooooo much like the guy from Blair Witch 2 (Jeff Donovan) ????
baldlocke 02-09-2007, 10:31 AM Relating time warps, the authors pointed out during an interview that they would have been able to justify the growing up of the actor who portrays Walt in the future episodes, they have in minds a precise way to explain this!! (the actor can't look like a child forever) An interesting explanation could be that passing of time on the island is anomalous..maybe outside time goes faster than on the island and Walt will return looking like an adult although only a few months passed on the island...

damn, I wanted to be the smartarse who made the shoe store comment. Arg!
Tachyon 02-10-2007, 12:16 PM wouldn't sawyer know aldous huxley? and therefore not think aldo is a weird name? he reads a lot
Hanks 02-10-2007, 03:42 PM If someone introduced themself as Aldo it would grab a second on my attention too!
I have a friend named Aldo.
kajah 02-11-2007, 06:42 PM Aldo isn't a weird name. It's a common Italian name.
But I thought of shoes first.
Get_A_Klugh 02-11-2007, 07:58 PM Part of me believe the writers just frivolously threw in the name "Aldo" so that Sawyer would have a weird-sounding name (at least, from Sawyer's perspective) of one of The Others to make fun of.
I wouldn't be surprised if we never see this character again.

actually, i wouldn't be surprised if we DO see this character again. this actor was in Sunny in Philadelphia, a semi-known actor guy, maybe meaning that this is a more important role
unicornspit 02-14-2007, 02:08 PM yep harliner Planet of the apes for me too. That horse riding gorilla...
