Did that seem odd to anyone? the rain kinda came and went quite a bit in this epi....and knowin' that it's somewhat controlled makes ya wonder what it means.

That book is just the type of thing the Others are into. Ken Wilber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Wilber)

As for the rain, it's hard to say whether it meant anything to that scene or not. It doesn't seem to match up with 'other' times when it was more ominous or foreshadowing, imho.

Thanks for the link and comment. Looking into the perennial philosophy I could definately see them looking at things in that capacity. I'm not sure how that connects with Stephen Hawking's book, but still interesting.

i KNOW this is silly...but did anyone else notice the resemblance between Eddie the undercover cop from Further Instructions and Aldo the book reading guard?

Books are used very symbolically and parallel (ly) in this show. One really must read the book in order to find the true connection - unless TPTB just thre it in there because they needed something that was lying around. I thought he was sitting under some sort of awning though>>?

Didn't he read "A Brief History Of Time" which is by Stephen Hawking instead of "A Brief History Of Everything" which is by Ken Wilber?

he's reading Hawking's book.

as for reading in the rain, if your job was to sit outside and be bored, you'd read in the rain too i'd guess.

i don't think there's anything else to it other than he has no choice...i think that's what you were originally asking about.

It's the Hawking book, and he was specifically reading about black holes. I do know that if you search the threads, there were threads on this as well as the similarities of guarding in the rain a'la Star Wars. Sorry - no link, but I know that there is good discussion happening on this topic elsewhere. :)

There's also some speculation about how Juliet's arrival date on the island is somehow linked to the discovery, or proof, of black holes. Way over my head.

Wait wait wait.

Ken Wilber is WAY different than Hawking.

He was reading "A Brief History of Time", which is basically a history of our understanding of how Time works - from the earliest scientists to what is known now. It contains information on how the fabric of space-time works. This includes Black Holes, Worm Holes, and how time is relative. It covers older sciences and how the newer sciences are based on them.

Ken Wilber mixes philosophy and science and is not considered "science" (at least, Stephen Hawking wouldn't consider it science).

Why is he reading that? I have no idea.

A Brief History of Time was written in 1988 and is woefully out of date. ***MOD Edit for rude comments toward other posters***

If, however, you want to get a firm grasp of the state of cutting edge particle physics and our current understanding of time and reality, then read Brian Greene's Fabric of the Cosmos.

Is it pretty common knowledge amoungst the Others that SKate's really names are Austin and Ford? Cuz that's what the guard says over the radio when he calls out on the radio that Alex brought Austin and Ford (Sawyer then knocks him on butt-ocks) . Just curious.

@FishBiscuit:
You said earlier: "There's also some speculation about how Juliet's arrival date on the island is somehow linked to the discovery, or proof, of black holes. Way over my head."

Can you give me the link to that thread, please? I'm very interested in the black hole theories and would like to read that, too.^^
