View Full Version : Are the women crueler than the men?
TRoss 02-08-2007, 03:12 AM "Damn good con, Freckles. I almost believed you were gonna shoot that boy."
"It wasn't a con."
Let me just say I LOVED Kate tonight - I have been waiting a LONG time for the return of Kick-a!@ Kate. But I found it interesting that Kate was willing to maim a man where Sawyer wasn't. And while both Sawyer and Kate killed a man, his was revenge for the death of his parents, and hers was because she just didn't want her father around.
And then there's Juliet. She was willing to kill a man to get what she wanted as well. Jack threatened to kill him, but I believe Juliet - I don't think he would have just let him die. She also said to get Kate and Sawyer back, even if they had to kill them to do it.
We've seen that both of these women have heart, and have done good things. But does it seem like they're willing to do crueler things than the men to get what they want?
briar910 02-08-2007, 03:24 AM Good question. Though as much as I love Kate, I don't think she is all that sweet. It's not the first time she would have shot a guy in the leg to get what she wants (remember the bank robbery).
As for Juliet, well we haven't seen her whole story yet and all the history between her and Ben. And she shot Pickett in order to save Sawyer and Kate's lives.

It's not the first time she would have shot a guy in the leg to get what she wants (remember the bank robbery).Remember, she only shot him because he was going to kill someone. ;) And shot him in the leg, not the heart.
I do think her character is a good person, but it also seems she's willing to go farther than the guys to get what she wants, whether want she wants is a toy airplane, or to save someone else's life.
As for Juliet, well we haven't seen her whole story yet and all the history between her and Ben. And she shot Pickett in order to save Sawyer and Kate's lives.See, now couldn't she just shoot him in the kneecap? :71:
lostlocke 02-08-2007, 06:23 PM Juliett did shoot Pickett dead and didn't have to that's true. However Kate killed a man too, I'm not saying without good reason, it seemed like he was a real creep. Do you go around killing creeps though? I don't!! they are both killers. Who is the nicer killer, who knows?! Sun killed someone too. I never thought that character ever had that in her, but I was surprised. As Colleen apparently was too!
As for the men, they have done plenty of violent things themselves. From Sawyer shooting a man and then finding out it was the wrong man, to Sayid torturing people, to Charlie shooting Ethan. I think most of the people on the island have had some violent outbursts. There are very few people that haven't.
I don't think the women are really that much crueler than the men. I think they are pretty equal in that vicinity!
GettinLost 02-09-2007, 12:07 AM Yeah, T, I was really surprised at Kate being the one to initiate the violence instead of Sawyer. It was good to see Kick Butt Kate again, but she was almost as "cold and calculated" as Julliet!!! HHHmmm... Like Julliet...
Locked_In 02-09-2007, 12:24 AM To answer your question from my perspective - yes. Women can be crueler than men if given the proper motivation. Men will fight with each other, walk away and be friends. A woman may wait 20 years, but she will get even. If my family, my children, were threatened, I believe I would shoot in a heartbeat. The female of any species is more vicious if she goes into protective mode or feels she is being threatened.
TRoss 02-10-2007, 04:38 AM Yep, GL, I did see a bit of Juliet in her there - and found that, though Juliet said differently, they both seemed very capable of being "leaders".

I don't think the women are really that much crueler than the men. I think they are pretty equal in that vicinity! You know, you may be right. It may just be that we don't think of women being naturally cruel or violent, so it may stick out more when they are.

Yes they are (not only on this show, in real life).
aurorawest 02-10-2007, 07:35 AM As for Juliet, well we haven't seen her whole story yet and all the history between her and Ben. And she shot Pickett in order to save Sawyer and Kate's lives.
Juliet shot Pickett in order to get what she wanted. I don't think she cared one bit about Sawyer and Kate. Saving their lives was simply a means to an end. She's selfish and desperate. I don't know if I'm ready to call her cruel.
And no, I don't think women are crueler than men, in this show or otherwise. Perhaps, as viewers, we just expect cruelty from men but not from women? ;)
Hey_Freak 02-12-2007, 03:42 PM But I found it interesting that Kate was willing to maim a man where Sawyer wasn't. And while both Sawyer and Kate killed a man, his was revenge for the death of his parents, and hers was because she just didn't want her father around.
I wasn't particularly surprised by that at all actually. If we compare and contrast flashbacks Kate has proved time and time again that she is more likely to use deception followed by violence if she has to, then Sawyer. For example Kate had no problem with shooting Jason and his cronies when she felt she had to. Sawyer himself revealed how he deals with things. He assumed it was a con because that was what he would of done.
I think that's why Kate is such a fascinating character, she really is a mystery to those on the island. Even to someone like Sawyer, who we would think, would know her well. It's the same mystery that makes Juliet so interesting.
Shamu 02-12-2007, 05:47 PM I'm not quite sure of the key to this thread but i'm am finding it interesting. Thinking about the points made about Kate and Juliette, and keeping in mind that Sun killed Colleen, it does seem like season three is the season for the girls to kick some butt.
I cant think of anything atm, have there been anymore killings this season cos so far, i cant think of a guy who has actually gone through with killing someone yet?
