View Full Version : Desmond's vs. Jin's Permission Experience
Melikon 02-15-2007, 12:11 AM What happened to Desmond, his cold rejection by Penny's Father after asking for his permission to marry Penny, is exactly what should've occurred to Jin (realistically speaking).
Thought the two scenes were so eerily similar. Even the offices seemed to be similar in lighting and ambiance. The only difference, besides the result and the expensive whiskey, was the painting in Penny's dad's office (Polar Bear?) instead of the large screen monitors with images of the island.
jennylee27 02-15-2007, 12:26 AM Yes, it was all eerily similar, perhaps reflective of the repeating pattern Desmond seems to be caught in.
People have also long suspected that Paik and Widmore are both tied in to Dharma and Hanso in some way.

Just makes you think..Mr. Paik saying yes, it had to be because he meant to use Jin in some fashion...and I'm thinking more than just as a tough guy/enforcer.
That deal with the whiskey though....BBBBRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
Mr. Widmore....cold as they come.
Selene1212 02-15-2007, 12:39 AM Yeah, the similarities are very eerie!
lostgurl 02-15-2007, 12:41 AM haha, I think the guy who plays Widmore is awesome. He's such a great villain, just like Michael Emerson. And I do think that Paik and Widmore are connected somehow. Good catch about the Jin proposal similarities.
Melikon 02-15-2007, 12:44 AM Hey, Desmond might not have got any whiskey, but at least he got to sit gown. lol.
Jin had to stand the whole time he was in the presence of Mr. Paik.
annie_monica 02-15-2007, 12:46 AM It definitely connects to Mr. Paik...with him infiltrating every ordinance he can find, including his own daughter
Pisaster 02-15-2007, 04:34 AM I saw this connection in terms of their decision to/not to work for their potential future fathers in law. Both were poor men in love with rich women. Both women did not want them to work for their fathers. One father allowed the marriage and the man took the job. The other father did not allow the marriage and the man didn't take the job. Both didn't really work out too well, so I'm not sure which decision was better...
penyours 02-15-2007, 04:59 AM Jin and Des, these were very similar scenes I wonder if there will be more parallels.
And yes Daddy Widmore was just downright cruel to grab two glasses
and leave one empty on the table!
Amber 02-15-2007, 08:51 AM What would you have done if you were Desmond? I was all angry at my tv screen and felt so bad for Des. I think I would've punched him or something, then stolen his scotch!
South Shore 02-15-2007, 09:10 AM I was also reminded of Charlie's experience from his flashback, when he interviewed for the sales job with his 'girlfriend's' father - the one he eventually stole from and conned.
Lea_Lost 02-15-2007, 09:38 AM I actually thought about the similarities beforehand, after LTDA. Jin marrying his dreamgirl with a high price, Des running away to solo-race instead....
You could say that neither of those turned out to be the good choice to make... Or did it? I sure am glad it was Des the one to be there in the crucial moment and the world's fate wasn't left to... Kelvin for instance.
Besides, if he had stayed, he could have found himself exactly in Jin's shoes, and he doesn't have the cultural background for just following orders, it could have turned out ugly.
And maybe Jin and his bride had it rough, but they do love each other in spite of everything and are working things out.
Now we know that it wasn't even them who decided their fate, it was their father-in-law...

Lol yeah that would have been immediately satisfying. Just think, Des was poilte and civil and Daddy Widmore basically treated him horribly probably got him thrown in jail and eventually got him trapped on the island, imagine what he would have done if Des had punched him and really pissed him off :eek2:
