View Full Version : Wizard of Oz allusion
Elinnz 02-15-2007, 12:34 AM I never really thought much about the Wizard of Oz references until tonight with the red shoes under the scaffolding -- and then Desmond insisting that all of these things "happened" - much like Dorothy does when she returns from Oz.
Coupled with Henry Gale and the hot air balloon, what does everyone think? Is Jacob the Wizard?
Sorry if this has been posted already!
Ibanez 02-15-2007, 12:36 AM I didnt see this yet so I thought would post it
Anyone else notice when the man with the red shoes was crushed by the falling debris his feet stuck out with the red shoes just like the Wicked Witch with the ruby slippers in the wizard of oz.
Elinnz 02-15-2007, 12:39 AM ha, i just posted this below. lots of Oz things now --- I'm beginning to think they carry more weight than I previously thought...!

Hmmm, who is the man behind the curtain??? :39:
Yknow, the "wizard" worked his special effects to make himself look omniscient, powerful, and mythological. Is there someone controlling things like Smokey and the rain behind the scenes???
1voice 02-15-2007, 12:57 AM I hadn't catched any of that, you guys! You are all very good. I thought it looked familiar, though...
abbybaby 02-15-2007, 01:20 AM Excellent observations! So who was this guy? Did the wicked witch of the East die first in the Wizard of Oz?
emmadoggy 02-15-2007, 01:28 AM D'oh!! I totally did not make that connection - but it seems so obvious now! So was Desmond "over the rainbow" in an alternate reality then? And was the jeweler woman Glinda the good witch? Or perhaps the wizard?
Bah!! Who knows. But it was definitely a nice little nod - if my brain hadn't been so melted from what was going on, I might have actually caught it.

OOOOooo... That's very interesting!!! All "smoke and mirrors", huh?

When I saw the title for this thread I saw the connection of the red shoes!!
NightMystic 02-15-2007, 01:45 AM maybe the one eyed patch guy from the question mark hatch is the wizard
Angela12 02-15-2007, 01:48 AM I like the idea that the "power" the Others hold may be very much an illusion, a la the "Wizard" of Oz. Very interesting theory. If nothing else, the red shoes sticking out from under the scaffolding was a very nice little shout-out.
thebridgeisover 02-15-2007, 01:50 AM "....And you were there! And you! And you!"
the Oz comparisons are very deep. Im loving it but Im still waiting for the show to reference Robert Mitchum and "Night Of The Hunter."
"It's a hard world for little things."
"Chiiilll... dren!"
in-the-snowglobe 02-15-2007, 02:19 AM Another Oz connection: remember in the movie the "rational explanation" is that Dorothy never went to Oz, she was knocked unconscious by a shutter that came loose in the tornado. Kind of like how Desmond's hit to the head sent him back to the island.
shanzy288 02-15-2007, 03:23 AM I'd say Vincent was Toto, but we haven't seen him in a while. Where is that dog?

i totally got this too. i was like, "wait a second....." :)
applecrush 02-15-2007, 05:10 AM totally. they could've chosen any color for the sneakers, but tptb chose bright red. i was almost expecting des to take the guys shoes and put them on, ya know, if he hadn't been so mad at that creepy old lady for letting that guy get smashed!
i vote for ben as the wizard. after all, dorothy asked the wizard to help her get home, and ben seems to be the one granting (or not) that wish these days!
Colonel Sanders 02-15-2007, 06:57 AM Thank goodnesss that Des didn't remove those red shoes...the sight of the dead guy's feet curling up would have been to much!
:)

Fantastic allusion! And I do think the jeweler lady could symbolize Glinda. She was the one who explained to Dorothy how the whole Oz thing worked too.
Indeed, I might have caught it too if my brain wasn't caught in a mobius strip wondering what was real and what was memory.

You know, Ben was the one who claimed he arrived in a balloon....this is working!
rthensley 02-15-2007, 10:32 AM I love the Wizard of Oz comaparisons.
I can't wait for someone to draw comparisons from Jack, Sawyer, & Kate to the Lion, Tin Man, & Scarecrow.
They all discovered that they had traits inside them that they thought were absent. I guess you could say they all were not the people (survivors) they thought they were.

So Sawyer was the Tin Man and found his heart, Jack found courage, but Kate seemed to be pretty zombie-like throughout the mini-arc if she couldn't figure out they were watching them or that there was a good chance they could have escaped the little island. So she didn't find her brain. :frown: Two out of three ain't bad, though.
HybridChild 02-15-2007, 11:23 AM "....And you were there! And you! And you!"
the Oz comparisons are very deep.
...Not forgetting "There is no place like home!", Not only was Desmond begging to be thrown into his past again (if it was his past), but the losties have all craved home, aimed towards getting home at one point...
Woo first post!
omgimsolost 02-15-2007, 11:27 AM I didn't pick up on it during the show, but thought something was certainly odd about it. I think I was too busy contemplating...WHO THE HECK IS SHE!!!!

haha me too, i kept thinking of the oracle from the Matrix...even the scene with bench was similar, and her attitude!
lostlocke 02-15-2007, 12:23 PM too much in common to be a coincidence in this case, I think definitely all those things were a reference to the wizard of oz. Love that movie so I'm happy!
sonotlost 02-16-2007, 12:07 AM so, i've noticed another Wizard of Oz reference (i may be reaching here). the first reference being henry gale and the hot air balloon. new reference, the person that died in desmond's flash-whatever. they were wearing red converse. at first i thought, who wears red converse, they're next to die. then i was thinking, only see the red shoes, how wizard of oz. then desmond wakes up when he gets hit in the head, like dorothy. she thought that what she dreamed was real, and so does desmond. so can we assume that desmond was hallucinating like dorothy?
DWalker4815162342 02-16-2007, 12:25 AM I thought that exact same thing, but more so when he's killed and all you see are his legs and shoes stickin out from under the collapsed scaffolding. Its like when the house lands on the wicked witch. Just another tid bit i guess. I doubt there is much to it. Maybe you could try syncing up Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and see if it matches up.

Smoke=Smokey
Mirrors=water, cloning, twin theory???
totally. they could've chosen any color for the sneakers, but tptb chose bright red. i was almost expecting des to take the guys shoes and put them on, ya know, if he hadn't been so mad at that creepy old lady for letting that guy get smashed!
Maybe all Desmond has to do to get off the island is click his heels three times and repeat, "There's no place like home!"
I love the Wizard of Oz comaparisons.
I can't wait for someone to draw comparisons from Jack, Sawyer, & Kate to the Lion, Tin Man, & Scarecrow.
Someone compared Kate to the scarecrow - brainless. But I actually think she's be more in line with the Lion. She's badly in need of courage. Every time she gets in a tight spot, what does she do?
SHE RUNS. ;)
Perhaps if she goes back to the island to try and rescue Jack, she will have found that she actually did have the courage inside her all along.
I suppose Sawyer would be the tin man - heartless. Yet in the mini-season, he opened himself up and was vulnerable and expressed his love for Kate so I suppose he's found his heart.
Jack would be the brainless Scarecrow??? Doesn't seem to make sense considering he's a spinal surgeon. Yet he doesn't seem to have much common sense. He goes off half-cocked on whatever idea grabs him first, without thinking it through, and people always call him on it and suggest smarter plans. So I suppose he is still in search of a brain to guide him instead of reacting purely on his emotions. :undecide:
Another Oz connection: remember in the movie the "rational explanation" is that Dorothy never went to Oz, she was knocked unconscious by a shutter that came loose in the tornado. Kind of like how Desmond's hit to the head sent him back to the island.
IMO, this is probably _the_ key reference. Just as Dorothy was traumatized/knocked out by the tornado and "woke up" in Oz, Desmond was at ground zero when the hatch/anomaly imploded and "woke up" in London. Then, after the fantasy trip, both regain consciousness and find out the events that transpired took place in their head, populated with characters from their immediate surroundings.
shtfilter 02-16-2007, 10:02 PM "Tom" is the wizard. I mean he was in "Apocalypse Oz"
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0801820/
Got mine in the mail last week and I have to say it isn't half bad.
Jealous_Guy 02-16-2007, 10:04 PM I always thought "Not In Portland" seemed like a weird title, until I thought that maybe it was supposed to be like "Not in Kansas". Doesn't seem like they took it in that direction, but I guess that could be loosely construed as one.
