This episode is once again reminding me of the Star Trek: Next Generation episode where they were all looping through time due to the Enterprise crashing into another starship that caused such a huge explosion they ripped a whole in the space-time continuum and were stuck in a loop. The only way to escape was to avoid the collision. This has all been said before, but I think there is new relavence for the discussion after tonight's episode.
The whisper effect that is created in the NG episode is due to noise from past iterations like the residual noise on a dubbed tape - this may hold some significance to the whispers on the island.
More significantly, however, I am thinking of how the Enterprise crew finally figured out how to get out of the loop - by sending a message to themselves. Data was able to somehow encode a message in the computer that carried over into the next iteration. Through that message they were able to finally make the right decision to avoid collision. What if the Numbers are working in a similar fashion to Data's message? What if those numbers are a constant throughout the iterations that were deliberately placed in the lives of each of the Losties to lead them to the Island?
