What was SUPPOSED to happen was that Charlie saved Claire in the water, and then died. Also, he took the lightning bolt that was supposed to hit Claire. Both times, he saved Claire from death...so couldn't that mean she is destined to die as well?

Well it doesn't mean that Claire would have died the times Charlie was supposed to. Yes she was drowning, but who knows, Chrarlie may have died but she could have used him as a raft to paddle back in on. LOL

We don't know that the universe wanted her to die, though. She may have just came close to dieing, but wasn't supposed to die.

Des knows about Charlie, but he doesn't ever mention Claire. I've been wondering about that a lot, too. Maybe someone saved her while Des tried and failed to save Charlie? Sayid seems the type to jump on in, and Locke is big on protecting Claire, also. Maybe Charlie was electrocuted but Claire (and Aaron, whom she was holding when the lightning struck) came out unscathed?
It seems Charlie's death will be tied to Claire in some way, certainly, but I'm not sure Claire also has to die.

Yeah, I don't think Claire was going to die either time or else Desmond wouldn't have said "I wasn't saving Claire, I was saving you". With the drowning I think it's pretty safe to assume someone else would have saved her, but I don't know how they (as in Claire and Aaron) would have avoid the electricity that would have gone Charlie. I'm no lightning expert, but is it possible that the lightning somehow would have knocked Charlie away when he was struck so that he was no longer touching them? I know generally with electricity from wires and outlets you can't let go, but is lightning different? I'll look into it.... but, I know it is possible to survive a lightning strike. Maybe if nothing else, Charlie would have died, being directly hit, but Claire and Aaron would have been okay? What are the odds of that?... I really have no idea

Edit: I found this article that i think sums it up pretty good: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/1999/w0618lit.htm

If you don't want to read the article... basically what I learned is that lightning causes severe, life threatening burns to the point of contact, usually the head, neck or shoulder. These burns occur at entry and exit point. Also, lightening can throw a person and the leading cause of death is cardiac or cardiopulmonary arrest. Only 20 percent of lightning strikes are fatal.

So based on this, it seems that a likely situation is Charlie was thrown away from Claire and Aaron, or (probably more likely) the burns Charlie gained from being the one struck is what killed him. This would especially be true if he was struck on the head.

Desmond said that Claire wasn't in danger. The lightning according to desmond was supposed to hit charlie. The drowning is a little different, now Claire was unconsious when Des found her, however according to Des charlie was the one who was going to drown trying to save her. Now my interpretation is that if we are thinking that Desmond's flashes are accurate then someone else must have found Charlie and Claire in the water and were able to save Claire and not Charlie. It's the only possible scenario I can think of at the moment.

Well, it seems logical that if the island is some big bad powerful entity that wants to get Charlie, it would target Claire because Charlie is always sniffing behind her like a little puppy-Claire is Charlie's weak spot as Kate is Sawyer's (or vise versa, depending on who you ask), so the island uses what it has.

I don't think Claire is in danger, she's just the bait.

I don't think Claire is in danger, she's just the bait.

That's another interesting theory, since Charlie is The Moth...

The name Claire means "bright, shining".
