View Full Version : Eko's Death & Charlie's Reaction
Melikon 02-15-2007, 06:58 AM Charlies non-reaction would probably have been more accurate. lol. OK, I know that Hurley and Eko barely ever spoke to one another, but the complete lack of reaction from Charlie over news of Eko's death really bothered me. Considering how much Charlie and Eko interacted in season two and how Charlie accompanied Locke to rescue Eko in this season "Further Instructions", I didn't find his utter dismissal of news of Eko's death believable. I mean, the very same night, Charlie and Hurley's sharing shots of expensive whiskey with Desmond!!!! Singing Irish/Scottish ballads, no less!!!!:eek2:
(Mind you, drinking not to commiserate over Eko's death but rather to underhandedly get some info out of Desmond)
Yeah....Charlie & Mr. Eko bonded pretty good there...trekking off together to find the drug plane...and building a church together, etc...and the news of his demise barely seemed to phase Charlie. Very good observation, Melikon...I guess we're all so use to crazy s**t happening and people dying...we get just numb to it when the characters announce the latest victim.
And what a cop out for the writers..."How did he die?"...."The island killed him."...."What do you mean....the island killed him?"...."You know what I mean".
It's like he writers could not find a cool way for Locke to say..."The monster ate him".
But...I hope they do show a scene where Charlie at least visits Eko's grave and says "goodbye"...Those two characters had very similar storylines....each trying to make it on their own....while standing in the shadow of their brothers. It would be a shame to have Charlie just shrug it off without acknowleging it to some degree.
Captain_Falafel 02-15-2007, 07:15 AM I was disppointed too, but consider this...
- Hurley's reaction to Libby dying was rather flat too. He seems to have forgetten her already.
- If it had been the other way around, Eko would not have batted an eye over Charlies dying. He didn't seem to give a crap about his friend Ana being murdered.
- Eko had been at deaths door anyway. The news might not have been a huge surprise.
But sit tight. We might see Charlie reflecting on Ekos death in further episodes. Charlie had too much to deal with in ep8 (Claire almost drowning, his own death prediction, etc). Dom has hinted that Ekos death will affect Charlie. Personally I'd love it if Charlie finished Ekos church for him.
RodimusBen 02-15-2007, 07:17 AM Well, Charlie does know what he means by that... he was right there in the tree when Eko was faced with the monster in season 2.
I don't think Charlie like Eko too much. First, there was the whole incident with the heroin, then the "let's build a curch, oh I changed my mind I have to push the button so you bring me my luggage" thing.
ame en peine 02-15-2007, 07:19 AM I was bothered by this too, and made a comment while watching the drinking scene that "it looks like the mourning period is over"! My only rationalization with this is that his feelings for Claire supercede everything else. The fact that something funny's going on with Desmond and it involves Claire will overshadow all else for him...
Very similar to after the hatch implosion. He should have been running back to camp frantically telling the others... Instead, he shrugged and took it as a moment to get to kiss Claire..

That's what i think too. He is so wrapped up in Claire, that he was more concerned with finding out what the deal was with Desmond and Claire than he was with Eko. If Charlie foudn out about Eko at a different time after Claire hadn't almost died, I think he would have been a bit more sympathetic.
Captain_Falafel 02-15-2007, 07:40 AM don't think Charlie like Eko too much. First, there was the whole incident with the heroin, then the "let's build a curch, oh I changed my mind I have to push the button so you bring me my luggage" thing
And Eko did almost blow Charlie to smithereens recently...
The Charlie/Eko friendship was just really inconsistent. Charlie seemed very concerned for Eko when he was bloody and unconcious after the explosion in the hatch. He even made an effort to save Ekos life! Charlie also seemed genuinely worried when Locke dragged Eko out of the polar bear cave.
Then we have Charlie not seeming bothered when Eko isn't back at the beach and his flat reaction to Ekos death. I think it's just sloppy writing unfortunately.
Burnt Sienna 02-15-2007, 11:06 AM Locke and Sayid did tell Charlie and Hurley to keep Eko's death a secret, so we'll probably have a big bruhaha over Eko by the next few episodes. We def. know where Charlie's priorities lie though. Claire first and foremost.
pacejunkie 02-15-2007, 11:11 AM I think Charlie did have an intitial reaction but like was said, the more imminent crisis took over. I don't think Eko's death has had a chance to sink in but it will, particularly in light of this new prophecy. Charlie believed Eko was a big tough indestructable guy and if the island can get him (interesting choice of words, the island killed him, and I think that's why they used those words), then Charlie might believe he doesn't stand a chance against the island, which represents his fate. I think Eko's death will add to Charlie's fatalistic reaction to Desmond's prediction. We haven't even begun to see the fallout of this yet.
annie_monica 02-15-2007, 01:23 PM - Eko had been at deaths door anyway. The news might not have been a huge surprise.
I agree I think everyone thought Eko was dead or missing...if you're on an island and someone goes off alone, what can you do?? They tried to find him a couple times, but he just kept being led back out there...
redmaria 02-21-2007, 07:23 AM they all seem to be completely numb to death lately...no wonder
molly1977 02-21-2007, 05:02 PM I think that Charlie will display the effects of Eko's death at some point. He didn't have any time to react. He was told Eko died and almost immediately, Desmond ran off. Of course, after that, Charlie focused back on Claire and what Desmond saw in her future. Now that he knows that Desmond saw his future, not Claire's, I think that finding out that he is going to die might make Charlie a little more introspective and he just might revisit his relationship with Eko.
I also agree that all of our Losties are a little shell-shocked from all the death. Just a short list, and only Losties that we got to know a little, of the recently departed:
1-girl that drowned (can't remember her name)
2-Sceve
3-Boone
4-Artz
5-Shannon
6-Ana Lucia
7-Libby
8-Eko
9-The Marshal
I am probably forgetting someone. These were people that survived a crash together and found a way to live with each other. "Live together, die alone". They have been on the island for a matter of months and they have suffered so many losses. At some point it has to be easier to just turn off around death than it is to deal with another loss.
Having said that, I still believe that Charlie will think on Eko at some point.
brermike 02-21-2007, 06:11 PM I think Charlie did have an immediate reaction when told that Eko died. Look at Dom's face during that scene. He even gets angry when Locke gives him the "answer" that the island killed him. After that he was more focused on Clarie/Desmond. Same thing with Hurley. He had a long walk by himself after the Others took J/K/S, I'm sure he was grieving then. Plus, when we get to his story, I suspect more of that will come out.

I agree. I was among those who thought everyone was acting a but blase about Eko's disappearance in TCOL, but Charlie definitely had a reaction to Eko's death for the minute that he was able to have one before the Claire crisis. I don't know why people expect tears and wails. He looked shocked to me.
