Does the Others' society kind of remind anyone of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village?"

That's a great comparison!

Yes and no, the villages in The Village completely shunned modern technology while the Others embrace it... without abusing it. Who is Bobby Brady any darn way?

Still, the concept is there — an isolated society meant to shelter people from the cruelties of the "real" world. Now the question is, "Is it really that much better?"

In isolation I can see the comparison. However, in quality and depth The Village was complete garbage, so I don't really see any further paralells.

I think the whole island setup is an elaborate manipulation, so in that way, I see the similarities.

Of course, I wish I could figure out if they were trying harder to keep the characters or viewers confused....

Yeah I totally see the similarities. Good catch.

4815162342 has completely worded it the way I wished I could have in the original post. And, yes, the questionis, Is it better?? I'm not being sarcastic or facetious or whatever...I'm really curious. Is the way they live better? I think this is going to be one of the key themes throughout the rest of the season.

I guess the comparisons are: There are going to be individuals who firmly believe that keeping "their people" (be it parents/children; political leaders/citizens, etc) in isolation from other influences is what's best for them. And you will always have the people who are supposedly being protected struggling to make that decision for themselves. If they're kept in perpetual ignorance of the ways in which other people live, how can they have the freedom to choose for themselves and make an independent decision?

(btw, I agree the movie The Village was not the greatest -- interesting plotline and I love anything with Joaquin Phoenix -- but wasn't that a cool scene, cinematophraphically speaking, when Joaquin grabbed the girls's hand at the last minute and took her down into that hideaway? Sorry, getting chatty. I'll stop now)

There are alot of differences from Lost but we could list The Village as a sub-prototype, for what might be going on here, in the larger category of Grand Manipulations along with The Truman Show and such.

I think I'm having Deja Vu: I just discussed this same thing with the co-workers this morning.

Yeah!!! Well said. Dh and I talked about the similiarities to the Village too. With the Others, we have the added psychological and scientific experiments/studies that I think will underlie the philosophy that the Others live by. I'm anxious to find out more about that! and there's definitely a bit of manipulation going on. Some Others appear to be drugged or something. Hmmmm...

I actually liked "The Viillage". I think it's major flaw was that it was hyped to be a horror/thriller flick and it didn't really fit that genre. The acting, music, cinematography (and the story too) were very well done. Ok, off my soapbox. I just thought it was a highly underrated movie.:frown:

One of the biggest resemblences I see is the use of a "monster". In the village it is used to keep people in, and on LOST...well, I'm not entirely sure exactly what it's used for, but we'll go with island security, perhaps keeping others out of Ben's utopia.

It reminds me far more of "The Village" from the 60's series "The Prisoner".
