View Full Version : Sawyer The Trivia Buff
MinnieVanMommie 02-28-2007, 11:43 PM Little House
Hooked on Phonics...
Snuffy...Sesame Street
Skeletor...a kids toy
He always has a trivia/modern day analogies.....This has been his trademark...We all laugh with them..but we have never really thought about why he is chock full of fun....
He talked about being in a trailor for 2 months....you dont get all of that in 2 months...
Clochard 02-28-2007, 11:46 PM I think it's supposed to demonstrate that Sawyer is much smarter and savvy than we give him credit for.
I think it hints at the past he had BEFORE the cons started and AFTER his upbringing in the trailer.
ZoeWashburne 03-01-2007, 12:12 AM I for one thought it was a bit overkill in this episode and has been in a few of them lately. They need to lay off Sawyer's little nicknames and references like that or they just become overused, you know?
I like Sawyer usually, but I thought he was the weakest part of this episode. He's nothing like the old Sawyer which is horribly disappointing. He has no edge, his only purpose seems to be the increasingly-annoying nicknames, and he's been featured way too much lately. He really needs to take a back seat for a few episodes.
Sorry, I didn't mean to rant like that! I just think they need to lay off on all the nicknames a bit and get Sawyer back in character.

I agree with you Clochard. Sawyer/James is much smarting then he wants to admit to anyone since he has an image to maintain, so instead he uses it as his sarcastic shield.
Clochard 03-01-2007, 12:15 AM I agree about the change in Sawyer...
But I like how Kate changes from James and Sawyer depending on how he's acting.
I didn't like how he looked at all the couples and then went and sulked and drank about it though.
ZoeWashburne 03-01-2007, 12:18 AM I agree about the change in Sawyer...

Yeah, I think it is neat that she was using James and Sawyer. And I agree about his sulking. I especially didn't get why they had pretty much the exact same scene of him sulking twice. We got it the first time around!
Like it has been said, there is a lot more to Sawyer than we know about I think and his is a pretty complex character. It's just a same they've only really been playing up one, shallow side of him.

I do agree with you on the part that they need to calm down with the Sawyer-ness in every episode. They should make him be serious at least sometimes.
I mean, he just got back from what would be a traumatic series of events and he's doing nothing but cracking jokes. It's kind of odd, and what made Sawyer's character great was that he was funny when he was being serious also. Ex. - Like his "Son of a...." moments.
wareagle57 03-01-2007, 12:22 AM I think the 2 months thing was just an explaination of the little house reference. I remember when I was sick from school, little house on the prarie was one of the only things on tv during the day other than soap operas. Thank goodness for the price is right.
Clochard 03-01-2007, 12:22 AM Mmm..I disagree.
I love all the Sawyerisms.
HOWEVER, I don't feel that we need to expand on Sawyer's character in that way. He uses sarcasm and his...distant-ness as a way of hiding his emotions. He always has, this just seems...fake to me, rather than "another side of sawyer"
Jealous_Guy 03-01-2007, 12:26 AM It's funny 'cause I actually thought Sawyer was more like his old self today than he has been in the past. I was starting to think maybe he was somehow affected by what he saw in the Clockwork Orange room Karl was being kept in, but after today I'm not too sure about anything.
Clochard 03-01-2007, 12:28 AM You thought he was back to his old self?
With all the hugging, and the longing looks for Kate?
Lockerox 03-01-2007, 12:29 AM I thought he was perfectly in character when Kate was trying to be all smiles and "hey let's just start over fresh" and all. He shut her down. Just like he's shut down people all his life that started to get too close. Perfectly in character.
imaaronsmom 03-01-2007, 12:30 AM Mmm..I disagree.
I love all the Sawyerisms.

I love the Sawyerisms too and agree that he just uses this as a way to hide his emotions and also just how smart he really is.

I agree, there he was himself.
When they were all reuniting on the beach, did Sawyer hug another girl to make Kate jealous?
Was she jealous?
Dolphinjen 03-01-2007, 12:33 AM The Little House reference was interesting b/c I thought I had read somewhere a while back that Josh was a possibility for the role of Charles Ingalls (for a movie? can't remember) when he got the Lost gig.
CptBoots 03-01-2007, 12:56 AM Little house, hooked of phonics, snuffy from sesame street, skeletor from He-man and the Masters of the universe... all things a child sees on TV and memorizes when he didn't goto school that day, for whatever reason, or in the summer. I know because I have such references in store as well. I don't think it makes him smart, it just means he missed alot of school, and spent that time in front of the T.V. I mean, who (in a certain age range) didn't grow up to He-man, and Little house, Sesame street, and see a thousand Hooked on Phonics commercials? I mean the guy is obviously smart, he's a Con-man. but I don't think is TV trivia super powers has anything to do with that.
Also I feel that his uber-name calling escapades this episode were a show that he was happy, I mean especially after that big hurley hug, that threw him for a loop. Sawyer was expecting to give Hurley a butt-tearing I suppose.
oh well. about time to go sleep, for tomorrow I Drive.
Clochard 03-01-2007, 01:01 AM He makes many more sophisticated references than those.
Thelma in Thelma and Louis?
That's the first that comes to mind.
But I remember on the special features watching the "Sawyerisms" where they go into detail about all of them, and I just remember them giving off the air that it was meant to show depth into his knowledge.
I'll have to go rewatch it

I love Sawyer and his nicknames and use of pop culture, but yes, it does get a bit "much" sometimes. I like it when he slips one in that's totally "out there" not when he's dropping them left and right. It would be nice if they would back off a bit and let him be a little less the "pop culture King". Noticed how Kate asked him "what are we talking about"?
Funny about the Sawyer/James use by Kate... Reminds me of the Spike/William references Buffy used... (sometimes I think this romance is just a "rewrite" of Spuffy - which I loved! Especially with the writers LOST has had!!)

Yeah, I agree. I think they're much more effective when used with a bit more discretion. I mean, I love his nicknames/comments too, but I think they work better when you aren't expecting them (as opposed to when you expect one every time he opens his mouth!)
briar910 03-01-2007, 02:52 AM Did Sawyer call Hurley S.A.? What does that mean?

No. you don't get all that in two months. I think that told us that James was alone with a TV a lot as a child.

I rarely see his nicknames as cracking jokes. I think he was being serious, in his own way. He was seriously trying to keep from going mad. As you say, he just got back from a series of traumas. Now he's "home". He's expecting to be able to fall into his comfort zone and relax a little ... and what happens? He gets surrounded by a bunch of touchy feely people ... glad to see him ... being nice and welcoming him. This is certainly not his comfort zone. How can he relax with all this creepy sincerity all around him? I'm thinking he wrenched himself loose from that love fest and made a B-line for his tent as soon as he could. And what does he find there? He's been burgled! Perfect!
No, seriously, perfect. What better way to remind everyone that he's the guy they hate, than to stalk up and pitch a fit at Charlie and Desmond? But what is he met with? They're nice to him. It's disarming, Sawyer quiets and asks who else was in on it.
Hurley! Thank god. He can always get Hurley's goat and he has a wealth of zingers he can toss at Hurley and everyone will be on Hurley's side! Great! Where is he? And he finds Hurley and almost gets smothered in Hurley love and greatfulness to see him. He is taken aback and then just caves in when Jin hugs him too. They don't hate him. He can't make them. omg, the world has turned upside down. What is there to do but give in and flow with it. At THIS point, the nicknames lose their edge and tone. NOW, he's cracking jokes. But only one for Charlie, I think. For the most part, he's over it by now.
I thought he was perfectly in character when Kate was trying to be all smiles and "hey let's just start over fresh" and all. He shut her down. Just like he's shut down people all his life that started to get too close. Perfectly in character.

Was she jealous?
I don't think he was trying to make her jealous. I think he was rather reluctant, but taking it. I don't think she was jealous. I think she knows where his heart lies, even if she can't get him to wax poetic about it. She knew she was getting ready to leave. She's going to miss him, but I think she also saw that he wouldn't *need* her as much as she'd like. That there were people there who were glad to see him and would take care of him while she was gone.
goddessblue 03-01-2007, 04:33 AM Did Sawyer call Hurley S.A.? What does that mean?I made a mental note of that, too! I heard the same thing!
100%

Great analysis there, Sheba. I agree that Sawyer was a bit disarmed. And I think his nicknames are a term of affection between friends at this point.
I mean, you can only call your very best girlfriends "vincent" and have them not take offense, ya know? ;)
Captain_Falafel 03-01-2007, 07:14 AM Brilliant Sawyer anaylsis, Sheba! Spot on.
I agree that the pop culture references were a little OTT in this ep, but this is still my favourite element of Sawyers character. It shows you that Sawyer is a really intelligent guy. He has absorbed so much knowledge from books and television. He hoards it all in bis mind (like a...brain stash?!) and always whips the best references to suit the occasion.
I'll say it again - Sawyer is an extremely clever guy. If he had gotten a better start in life he could have really made something of himself.
lostlocke 03-01-2007, 08:54 AM Loved the "little house" quote. Just because I myself love Little house on the prairie. Although I'm not gonna cop out and say I was sick and it was the only show on in my trailer!! Come one Sawyer and fess up that you just can't get enough of Half pint!!
Lockerox 03-01-2007, 09:18 AM Did Sawyer call Hurley S.A.? What does that mean?
It was esse. A hispanic slang word. Means dude, homeboy or something like that I think. It was really funny because the first time I heard it was from Cheech Marin in the Cheech and Chong movies.
desmondslosthairstraighteners 03-01-2007, 09:32 AM I agree with you Clochard. Sawyer/James is much smarting then he wants to admit to anyone since he has an image to maintain, so instead he uses it as his sarcastic shield.
Or maybe Sawyer is the shield, cracking jokes left and right, insulting, shutting down people and James is the guy inside, the guy who longs to be with Kate and the guy on the beach with the puppy dog eyes looking at whatsherface and the munchkin. Like a split personality, as a result from his parent's death. Hmmm that was pretty profound lol.
100%
It was esse. A hispanic slang word. Means dude, homeboy or something like that I think. It was really funny because the first time I heard it was from Cheech Marin in the Cheech and Chong movies.
Yeh and that's kind of relevant because Hurley is like half Spanish or something, well he looks it, and so does his parents.
Como 'Estan esse?
flyer61055 03-01-2007, 09:39 AM I think all the tv show references is there to show Sawyer suffers from Rosie O'Donnell sydrome, a lonely child raised by the television and probably his escape from whatever his reality was, which probably wasn't great.
I'm on the "tired of the nicknames" bandwagon too and the pining after Kate is making me want to jab pencils in my eyes. Sawyer needs to disappear for awhile. His character has grown tiresome.
MinnieVanMommie 03-01-2007, 10:04 AM Sawyer called Hurley Snuffy...snuffy for snuffulluffagus (butchered spelling as I have no idea how to spell that...lol) from sesame street...did I miss something else?
I dont think that his references to pop culture makes him smart and intelligent.
eta: OOOOOO wait....He said Essa...which is a spanish reference for a friend or something...
lostlocke 03-01-2007, 10:14 AM I dont think that his references to pop culture makes him smart and intelligent.
..
I don't think they are supposed to make him look smart.
lostinbaltimore 03-01-2007, 10:17 AM I'm with Sheba --
I think there's a lot more to Sawyer and his nicknames mean he may be friendly, but he's not really friends with anyone -- even though the losties think Sawyer is their friend. I think the names/cultural references are very clever and I appreciate the humor among all the drama.
MinnieVanMommie 03-01-2007, 10:30 AM I don't think they are supposed to make him look smart.
I was just referencing to some of the posts that said it was there to show us how smart he is....
Pop culture doesnt make anyone smart....Being a com man gives him more critical thinking skills..Those kind of thinking skills are higher up on Blooms taxonomy than memorizing trivia....It is a cute personality thing...
islandchica 03-01-2007, 10:46 AM Nah, I don't think Sawyer's nicknames/references make him smart, per se, but they definitely make him witty! He's always able to pull them out at the appropriate moment.
MinnieVanMommie 03-01-2007, 11:43 AM witty sexy...any sawyer talk is good though...;-)
geekmom 03-01-2007, 12:27 PM I also Found it interesting that Sawyer refer to her as "Kate" Not FRECKLES Have we ever heard him call her by her name?
goddessblue 03-01-2007, 12:49 PM It was esse. A hispanic slang word. Means dude, homeboy or something like that I think. It was really funny because the first time I heard it was from Cheech Marin in the Cheech and Chong movies.
how did i miss that?
Juliezgroovy 03-01-2007, 08:31 PM I assumed he called her Kate because she kept calling him by his real name. He was making a point.
GettinLost 03-01-2007, 10:08 PM Brilliant Sawyer anaylsis, Sheba! Spot on.

Agree totally Capt. F. I like that - BRAIN STASH!!!!

Well I'm not THAT tired of them!!! LOL!! Just a little more "descretion".
I also Found it interesting that Sawyer refer to her as "Kate" Not FRECKLES Have we ever heard him call her by her name?
Yes, he has called her Kate other times also. I think the more serious the need the more he uses her name.
Mr. Find 03-02-2007, 01:28 PM I know sometimes I look too deeply for hints and clues. Last week's Sawyer pop culture reference to Bobby Brady got me thinking the name of the actor who had that role, Mike Lookinland. was a hint. "Look inland". Get It?
Well, anyway here goes. Little House on the Prarie had a spinoff and severeal TV movies. I like their titles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_House_on_the_Prairie_%28TV_series%29#Spin-offs_and_sequels
A New Beginning
Look Back to Yesterday
The Last Farewell
Bless All the Dear Children
Intended as a hint by the Lost producers. I doubt it. Still is interesting, in that Lost sort of way, anyway. Like seeing Lost characters in cloud shapes, I guess.
Keep them pop cultures coming, James!
MinnieVanMommie 03-02-2007, 02:09 PM Very nice!!!...lol
I wonder if we can now say that Roger workman could be a reference to Mr Rogers which was right after Sesame Street.
Lost in Hoboken 03-02-2007, 03:09 PM Very nice!!!...lol
I wonder if we can now say that Roger workman could be a reference to Mr Rogers which was right after Sesame Street.
And he called Hurley Snuffaluffagas!!
MinnieVanMommie 03-02-2007, 03:18 PM I know...that is why I sai the sesame street thing...
BTW I am lost in Bayonne...lol...how is Hoboken???
Admiral Erik Pressman 03-02-2007, 03:34 PM Sawyer's knowledge of pop culture definitely makes him knowledgeable. Smart isn't a very good descriptive word, because it can mean a lot of different things, but personally I think that the pop-culture knowledge does make him smart. But Sawyer is also very well read and clearly had a lot of knowledge of literature as well.
Sawyer really must be a genious to be able to bust out one-liners like that off the top of his head. I know I couldn't, and I really don't think anybody I've ever met could do it either, but I guess Sawyer isn't a real person and all those lines are written for the character, so....
There's actually an entire "bonus feature" dedicated to this topic in one of the DVD bos sets.
molly1977 03-02-2007, 03:39 PM I'm on the "tired of the nicknames" bandwagon too and the pining after Kate is making me want to jab pencils in my eyes.
Hey flyer-you got me int trouble at work. I laughed out loud and my boss came over and saw me on the Lage. :wink1:
I love the character of Sawyer, but I think that the pop culture references were a little too much this week. The nicknames I still adore. It seems like the people that have the nicknames are the people that Sawyer likes.
Hey Hoboken-you live in a rocking town. This is your big St. Patrick's Day weekend, enjoy!!
*Michelle* 03-03-2007, 10:34 PM Very nice!!!...lol
I wonder if we can now say that Roger workman could be a reference to Mr Rogers which was right after Sesame Street.
Riding the trolley into the Land of Make-Believe. :biglaugh:
I do love these overanalyzation threads! It's nice to see other geeks out there.
MinnieVanMommie 03-03-2007, 11:02 PM welll if we want to go pretty far here..They film the Lost in Kauloa Ranch on Oahu which is where they did the digital animation for Jurassic Park...Dinosaurs to dinosaurs...to Barney????...lol
