View Full Version : Hurleys Daddy Issues...
MinnieVanMommie 03-01-2007, 12:27 AM So here we have it where Ceech just up and left Hugo....
17 years later...money brings him back....
BUT..the mother called him....I would assume she called because she knew he would now come back because of the money...In the meantime she just really wanted him back for herself...for her needs...TMI!!!...lol...
But here she wasnt even looking out for her sons needs....
I wonder where he was for all those years....I know he said Las Vegas but for 17 years? It looked like he was never around at all... no visitation etc....
do_it_for_johnny 03-01-2007, 05:05 AM Yet another character with a messed-up father situation.... such a recurring theme.
MinnieVanMommie 03-01-2007, 10:11 AM but what is up with the mom here dragging him back for her own gain? and giving him the same respect he would be due as if he was around for the long haul...
lostlocke 03-01-2007, 10:19 AM Didn't like the mother taking him back in like that. As if nothing had happened and Hurley shouldn't be mad at him.
flyingv 03-01-2007, 10:21 AM Hmm, good point MVM. Maybe it was her that sent him away in the first place. She didn't look too sad when he was leaving; they may also have had contact all along, but just without Hurley's knowledge. Which would be cruel, I know but sometimes parents do what they think is the right thing at the time without looking at the big picture.
Interesting that we have another character with Daddy issues though.
molly1977 03-01-2007, 10:23 AM Papa Reyes definitely did a number on poor Hugo. It was interesting, as a viewer, to see the start of Hurley's wieght issues. He was eating to comfort himself after his father left. Think that it was an Apollo bar, not positive though.
I think that his father did love him as a only a very flawed man could. It seems that most of the fathers were self-serving, greedy, hurtful, and manipulative; however, they did love their children. Christian Shepard was incredibly hard on Jack and said terrible things to him, but in the end we knew that he did love Jack. Same thing for Hurley's father.

I see where you are coming from and agree with you. I think many lost flashbacks are great in dealing with the characters family and personal issues. From learning about Locke's father (which tears my heart out every time, I think about it!) to Sawyer's father who killed sawyer's mother and then himself ( there's some big issues) to Jack's father and now Hurley's. Seems like everyone has daddy issues!!!

I think they are shaping Carmen Reyes to be something of a Penelope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penelope) figure: the faithful wife who remains loyal to her long-missing husband. Odysseus was gone for nearly 20 years, having left his wife and small son. I think they are using this mythos for Desmond and Penny (obviously) but I think they are replaying it here with Carmen and Cheech, to reinforce the theme.

To put it mildly!!!
babygotbackgammon 03-01-2007, 10:43 AM I wonder if Hurley now regrets not taking up long-abscent Cheech on his offer. That scene was pretty heart-breaking, I mean, I wouldn't necessarily think of Cheech & Jorge as dramatic heavyweights, but I was very moved.
e_copp 03-01-2007, 10:45 AM Hey don't forget Kate she blew up her father.

Yeah, it's possible he does regret it, but I don't blame hurley for leaving after his father's offer. His father left him for over 15 years without an explanation. He deserved it. Hurley had to do what he felt like he had to do, which was go to australia. I would have done the same thing. I didn't feel bad for Hurley's dad, I just felt bad for Hurley.

Exactly...I was floored by the Dont talk to your father like that comment...

Yes while she was looking out the window, she did look like she knew what was going on....Boo to her...It did appear that she may have kept in touch with him through the years...otherwise how would she have known how to get in touch with him?
