I figured the dart was something that flew out from the Hatch, since there was a dartboard amongst the rubble that remained after the Failsafe Frack-up.

My first thought was that it would have some type of drug or poison that will eventually "do" him in...

that's kinda what I thought... and it wasn't fresh from the wrapper or anything, IIRC it was a little mangled, so the hatch idea would be plausible...

Maybe it is part of one of Rousseu's traps?

I agree that it is hatch detritus. Sawyer and Kate don't know about the implosion yet so Sawyer's line "how the heck did it get out here?" is supposed to remind us of that. And I agree that it really was used as a simple device to get them to sit down and have their "sorry" talk.

The dart did have an allegorical reference to the lion and the mouse story, where the big bad lion gets a thorn in his paw that the little mouse pulls out for him. Significance? I don't know, except it sets up some power relationships and gives Sawyer yet another lesson in humility and accepting others' help.

But what was the point of having it in the episode?

1) A point to have Kate and Sawyer in a sit down moment to say sorry, etc.
2) A clue/point saying that they are on the right track back to the beach (or at least in x distance from where the hatch was.

It was all burnt and twisted. Flew out of the hatch, for sure.

My thoughts as well and since Kate and Sawyer had no clue about the hatch blowing up it would make sense for Sawyer to ask how it got way out here -
thus letting us know just how big the kaaboom was!

Wasn't there some other stuff lying around there that was clearly from the hatch? I never thought for a second that it was anything but a part of the dart set from the hatch because I could swear there were other hatch debris in the shot.
