Dude, I mean, if Hurley had done like his Dad said, and given away all the money, and kept just enough to buy a carbureteur, do you think that the curse would have been broken?

Personally, I say: yes.

What is more, I think that his Dad - at that point - was truly concerned for him. I think up until then his Dad was more or less telling Hurley what his Mother ordered him to. But at the moment when Hurley and his Dad were talking there before he leaves, I really think that his Dad was finally cutting through the bullshit and telling him what he really felt in his heart. And Hurley knew this. And it was like I was saying to myself: "Do it Hurley, give the money away!" But of course we know that he didn't. But he ALMOST DID! I could see it in his eyes. I gotta say that that scene was pretty emotional for me.

Well, as long as Hurley's doomed to live out his days on Craphole Island, he might as well go back in time and give it a shot :D

I think the point of the episode is "life is what you make it...you can make your own destiny...you have choices".

Hurley did not want to reestablish ties with his dad. Hurley's dad walked out and mom wanted to reestablish ties because she "had needs". Mom said she was calling dad because Hurley needed a male role model but mom's needs were selfish. Did you see the way Hurley screamed at the dinner table "noooooo"???

Hurley CHOOSE not to reconnect with his dad.

Oh yeah! I agree with everything you said there. But still, what do you think? If Hurley had given away the cash - even if he then told his Dad to take a hike - do you think that would have broken the curse? Inquiring minds want to know...

I did think to myself when I was watching that scene that Hurley was at a crossroads. He could go back to the way things were and do his life over again or he could keep going on. Maybe if he had chucked it all the curse would have ended, but that would have been going backwards and in life you can only move forwards. He had to move on, it was a choice he made but it really was no choice. He had to find a way to make his own luck going forward, not trying to fix the mistakes of the past.

That scene was kind of heartwarming. I do think the father was being earnest - a switch after making a play for "World's Worst Dad" award. When he mentioned giving it away, that was honest and heartfelt..

It might be a reference to giving away belongings and it will return tenfold..
