View Full Version : Jin's English
Melikon 03-01-2007, 01:54 AM So glad to hear Jin finally speaking more English.
Thank you Sun, keep speaking to him in English.
Surprising lack of accent though.
DDK's improved his Korean accent since season one, I guess he'll have to start perfecting his broken English accent now.
penyours 03-01-2007, 02:09 AM Yeah it was good to hear Jin speak more English, I wonder if Sawyer will continue to teach him some phrases. The one thing I was surprised about was if Jin could understand enough English to realise that Sayid and Sun were lying to him and planning an ambush on the others, how come he could barely understand any English in this episode.

maybe he's just pretending; he shucks himself of alot of responsibility by pretending not to kow what's going on.
RodimusBen 03-01-2007, 02:15 AM I think in Glass Ballerina, he was also picking up a lot from their intonations and other "tells."
I love that he's learning English. It gives his character somewhere new to go.
lostlocke 03-01-2007, 11:05 AM Love that Jin is learning english, I loved the english lesson he got from Sawyer last night!! Very funny.

Yunjin Kim actually spent a lot of time in the States when she was younger (in NY, I believe), before moving back to Korea to further her acting career. So her English is actually quite good. Maybe too good--she should probably have more of an accent, huh? Poor DDK--he gets lambasted for his bad Korean and then his fake Korean accent :)
penyours 03-02-2007, 05:05 PM Yes, Yunjin's English is excellent. She speaks with an american accent, with only a hint of a korean accent

Good to see Sawyer was helping him out too
I am hoping that Jin will start to speak better English after a reasonable period of time- I think he has so much to offer the group, and speaking just a little English would allow Jin to be more involved in what is going on...
Nevermore 03-02-2007, 07:01 PM I got the impression that Sun had suddenly lost her Korean accent this episode.
But then, I seem to recall Naveen Andrews briefly dropped his fake Arab accent in "Exodus".
redmaria 03-02-2007, 07:07 PM isnt he supposed not to pronounce r's first time around?i guess it was kind of fake, the way he immediately took on...
hawke 03-02-2007, 09:25 PM Who cares about their accents, Jins Speaking English !!!!!!!!!
Wait, Im sure that thats come to someone in a dream... lol

I agree. The poor guy can't catch a break when it comes to his accents.
LostIslandBaby 03-02-2007, 11:40 PM I really liked DDK's acting in this episode. He really appeared as though he was trying to learn English for the first time in his life. Thumbs up, DDK!

I'm sure being on Lost has required Daniel Dae Kim to learn a lot about his Korean heritage, much more so than had he never been cast on Lost. More than any other character on the show, Lost has probably become an extensive and ongoing learning experience for DDK. Pity that he can't get some kind of academic degree in linguistics for all his work. LOL.
