View Full Version : Missed Opportunity for a LOTR Ref
imfromthepast 03-01-2007, 10:11 AM When Saywer called Charlie a munchkin, I thought that it was a perfect opportunity to call him a hobbit, given Sawyer's penchant for pop culture refferences.
Had he actually called Charlie a hobbit, or if he does in the future, what would you think?
Would you see this as a gimmik, or has there been sufficient time since ROTK and has LOST come into its own enough for this type of in-joke to not be seen as a self-centered plug?
Aggie00 03-01-2007, 10:14 AM That would have been a funny reference, given that Sawyer uses all kinds of references in this show (like Little House on the Prarie).
islandchica 03-01-2007, 10:17 AM Hmmm... It seems to be that the writers would try to stick to a more subtle LotR reference, if any at all. I mean, think about it: When Lost first started, most viewers only recognized Dom from LotR. Calling him a hobbit on the show would be too blatant, IMO. But it would be funny.
missioni 03-01-2007, 10:19 AM I'm on the fence on this one. The hobbit reference would have been great. I don't think Dom would have appreciated it, in the USA Today interview last week, he said he was appreciative that he's been able to distance himself from that role.
imfromthepast 03-01-2007, 10:25 AM Dom's feelings are the only reason I think a refference hasn't been made to date.
Too bad though. I think he has sufficiently distanced himself now. It's not like a hobbit reference would cause the legions of Charlie fans to collectively go, "Hey that's right! Dom played Merry in the Lord of the Rings movies! I think I'll watch those from now on instead of LOST, and when I think of Dom I will always picture him in that cute little wig and elven cloak!"
wetsprocket 03-01-2007, 10:26 AM i think it actually *was* a hobbit reference. i laughed when he said it. methinks it was a case of "less is more". had he called him a hobbit, it definitely would've been too blatant. by calling him a munchkin, it references dom's hobbit role without being so obvious. anyone who knows dom's LOTR involvement would catch the nod. sawyer was in rare form. great episode for pop culture and sawyer/jin interaction. "look who's hooked on phonics"

Camperjen 03-01-2007, 10:32 AM I think it would've been a great line to throw in :) I said it in my head regardless . . .

Billy? Billy Boyd?
JK
I agree, it was a LOTR ref without being a LOTR ref since it made me think of LOTR!
Very clever.
It's probably going to be all we get.
geekmom 03-01-2007, 12:54 PM Look at Doms face when Sawyer says that. He is about to crack up....It think it was smartly done, not to be obviousbut still give LOTR a nod
Lockerox 03-01-2007, 01:03 PM I agree it would be too obvious, almost tantamount to delivering an aside while looking at the camera. But, yes, I did think in my mind "Hobbit, he wanted to say Hobbit!" Too funny.
pacejunkie 03-01-2007, 10:07 PM Actually it made me think of the Wizard of Oz, which was the reference I believe was intended because of all the other Oz references we've had on the show (Henry Gale, hot air balloon, Not In Portland, red shoes under the rubble, etc.).

Yeah, I immedietly chalked it up to yet another WoO ref, but, the people I was watching it said "hobbit!" immedietly after. So, it's like a 2 way reference! :)
TK 421 03-02-2007, 02:48 PM I had the same Hobbit thought too but I'm glad they didn't...the whole episode was so light and slightly over the top I think that would have been going too far. And yes I hadn't put 2 and 2 together regarding the Wizard of Oz theme that's perfectly fitting!
On a side note, has anybody noticed a lot of Sawyer's references aren't totally current? I like that, like he's still referring to things he saw as a kid but probably hasn't seen a movie in years?
redmaria 03-13-2007, 06:51 PM I LIVE FOR THAT DAy..I LIVE for the look in Charles' face once hes been called that!!!gno doubt it ll be one of the natural responses..bit like sly's genuine movie stunt injuries..drools
