Roger must have died after the crash, because the keys were found in his
hand. If he had died at the time of impact, then wouldn't the keys still be
in the ignition?

Good point. I agree. OK, so maybe he was injured in the wreck and took the keys out and was going to walk for help but something (Smokey?) got him? But wouldn't he have had a walkie? Hmmm. I wonder if we'll ever even know how he died.

I think he just died in a car accident. Perhaps he was drunk?? The point that was trying to be made was that "you make your own luck" as was mentioned throughout the episode. Obviously the rabbit's foot didn't do him any good.

With all that is going on in this show, how concerned are we really about how Roger died? I'm done adding new questions to the pile.
The keys were in his hand because the writers needed to get the key to Hurley and they didn't want to have him just walk up the the van in the jungle.
The van, which by the way, seemed a little close to the camp to just now be found. Now that they have found a boat, balloon, and a van, maybe they should start looking for a helicopter.

I'm waiting for some quads so they can really go for a joy ride!
But in all seriousness, and ATV is more realistic than a Dharma VW van.

Maybe Vincent grabbed the keys with his nose(hmm, behold the paradox)and threw em through Rogers arm and then shook off the arm and called for our guys.Maybe someone else did it instead of Vince ,only then gave the arm for Vince to cARRy

But how did Vincent get the arm if the doors were closed?

I'm not sure we can even assume there was a crash. The fact that the keys were in his hand indicate he either just shut off the van or he was just about to start it. The van could have been toppled over later by a storm, or the smoke monster, or the system failure, or some other island phenomena.
We have all seen/read enough stories where a person dies and then has his/her body moved. So maybe we shouldn't even assume Roger died in the van.

yeah,of course.to assume there was a crash d be at least naive!we dont know how roger died ,neither do we know how the keys were placed in his hand.but a window was surely rolled down so vincent reached em
