View Full Version : candy bar
Lost_in_DeLandFla 03-01-2007, 01:59 PM Did anybody catch the brand of candy bar Cheech gave little Hurley? It didn't look like an Apollo Bar, but I couldn't see what it was clearly. Since TPTB have been tossing Easter Eggs in so freely lately, I was a little surprised that it didn't look like an Apollo bar!
lostgurl 03-01-2007, 02:22 PM It didn't look like an actual brand, probably something the made for the show. It looked like a light blue wrapper, and a plain chocolate bar?
sp31767 03-01-2007, 02:46 PM I thought the candy bar said "Polar Bar" but i could be wrong

Great screen cap! Polar Bar would be funny! Maybe the wrapper has a big white bear on a light blue iceberg.... The candy looked like a regular Hershey bar, but the wrapper was not something I have ever seen....and I have seen my fair share of candy wrappers!
I just thought it was odd that they threw in so many fun Easter Eggs in Flashes, and here was a good opportunity and nothing!

Haha, that would be awesome!
I was also really surprised that it wasn't an Apollo Bar. :frown:

Yeah, thanks for the nice screen cap. But what I'm seeing is not "Polar Bear", but "xxxx Bar".
WildCard07 03-01-2007, 05:31 PM On the Jay and Jack podcast they said it was a Glacier Bar...
Lost_in_DeLandFla 03-01-2007, 07:47 PM Once again, completely irrelevant thread, no hidden images, no whispers, just candy....
Can't find anything on the net for a Glacier Bar...Glacier Mints from the UK, but nothing that is a chocolate bar.
Don't you think it's kind of weird how they played up the candy bar thing? Was it just a set up for another fat Hurley joke? Poor Hurley.

I don't think it was a "fat Hurley" joke - in "Dave," Libby offers Hurley some comfort, saying (about his size), "You probably just have a slow metabolism" or something like that, and he brushes her off, saying, No, implying that's not what's going on. In "Dave" he seemed to be aware of what he was doing; he tried to talk about it to Libby, and even tried to destroy his hoard (although he wasn't entirely successful at first.)
I agree that there are two stereotypes at work here: the first is that overeating always results in fat, which was reinforced in the Trish Tanaka episode, by showing Hurley as a child of normal weight.
The other is that overeating is a substitute for love - specifically Hurley being abandoned by his father.
The reason it didn't irritate me, personally, was because IMO TPTB have been treating Hurley pretty compassionately. As a character, he's the butt of Sawyer's teasing, but that's in character for Sawyer, too.
DarkTeach 03-05-2007, 11:36 PM When I saw that scene, my first thought as dad drove away, and mom had said don't eat the candy bars was "the beginning of the end" for Hurley. The rejection of his father (by leaving) and the controlling aspect of his mother, he found comfort in that candy bar... and it went from there... :(
mrcannabis 03-05-2007, 11:45 PM just for my own gain ...What exactly is the story behind the "Apollo Bar"?
MyLost 03-06-2007, 01:49 PM When I saw the candy bar, I thought, ah ha, a clue, wait til I see the screencap on the Fuse tomorrow. I think they threw that in so everyone would go looking.
HoardingHurley81 03-06-2007, 02:05 PM Notice how the lettering looks exactly like the coloring, shade, etc of the cover of the first season.
