View Full Version : Hurley's Weight and the Candy Bar
jonboy861 03-01-2007, 02:09 PM Hello everyone not sure if this was already said, but I am ssuming that when we see Hurley's father give him the chocolate bar at the same time as he is leaving, it is meant to be a way to show us that Hurley's dad's leaving him was the reason Hurley became overweight. I don't mean to get all psychological, but, Hurley could have used food as a msk of the true feelings that he missed his father and needed him in his life, which is why he ate so much and became overweight. Just a thought. Opinion? Thanks.
Carlo210 03-01-2007, 02:17 PM Aye. His father said ''eat - live a little'', so he did when he was a kid because he was sad/angry at his father's disappearance.
When Hurley finally gets to wanting and trying to beak the addiction, this is where Dave comes in. Hurley felt horrible for what happened on the platform and Dave is what made Hurley 'give up' and just eat. Eating was a way for Hurley to compensate for crappy things in his life. Libby was his bringer of hope, once and for all, and Hurley is finally a lot happier about himself than he was back home.
I like his story. :)

Hmm. :)
mosshead 03-01-2007, 02:43 PM ....When Hurley finally gets to wanting and trying to beak the addiction, this is where Dave comes in....
... and presumably, the appearance of Dave is the moment when he is institutionalized for mental illness? I've been wondering when we would get back to Hurley's story and am glad we got some insight in this episode.
Carlo210 03-01-2007, 03:14 PM Dave was more of a sideffect of his current trauma and longing for comfort. Like Hurley said, "I'm not crazy".
Dave was manifested because Hurley was feeling horrible about the platform event (Hurley killing a few people). Dave was created subconciously by Hurley to make him happy. How does Hurley get happy? By eating.
Same story with his dad. Hurley ate to cover up his pain - he ate to "Live a little".
This is the story of Hurley finding true hope. Eating is a way for him to cover up his sadness. Throughout his time spent at the mental institution and on the island, he learns that he needs to have hope, not food, to overcome hardships.
100%
Also, Moss, Dave and Hurley have no history outside of the institution. Dave appeared when Hurley was in the institution - they didn't know 'eachother' before then.
xManofFaithx 03-01-2007, 04:33 PM Cowboy Hurley definitely has some daddy issues
stefanie_bean 03-05-2007, 11:20 PM Interestingly, Hurley's father is named David - and Hurley's "shoulder devil" was named Dave. Dave was the one urging Hurley on, to the very edge of a cliff itself. So perhaps when Hurley let Dave throw himself off the cliff, perhaps that was a healing of the "father issues" as well as the food issues.
evanesco75 03-09-2007, 02:07 AM Interesting point, stefanie_bean. I just hope Hurley's resolved his 'curse' and 'daddy' issues for good now; it's so nice to see him taking risks, creating some fun for the island; that's what I love about him!

Hi, evanesco75: I have always wondered if what Hurley perceived as a "curse" was actually either some kind of "karmic amplifier" or pure coincidence. Since the human mind has a tendency to see patterns in everything, it is very reasonable that he would assume he was "cursed," especially if he had a superstitious bent to start with.
The Island has been really a good place for him in a lot of ways. In a way his "curse" *was* his whole baggage of issues with his father. So I think when he let go of "Dave" he was letting go of his bitterness over David (his father) as well. In that sense, The Island has done what all his mental health treatment did not. He was functioning after being released from the hospital, but not really living, if you know what I mean. So I too hope that he really "comes into his own" as he loses the emotional "baggage."

I think that's a highly insightful post. I mean, it makes a lot of sense that Hurley's Dave would somehow be connected to his father David, as they both push him to do what makes him happy... which is eating.
I still wonder if these two have anything to do with Libby's dead husband David... :eek2:

Thanks, SJB - glad you found it interesting. I guess we will have to wait for another Libby fb to see if there's a connection.
