In the first season one of the plot points was obtaining fresh water for all the losties. In season two they worked around it by implying that the water came from the swan hatch. In this third season, with the destruction of the hatch and the plot emphasis on the others and Jack, Kate and Sawyer, TPTB are probably hoping that we fogot all about the water issues that were important in season one and should be important now as well. I'm guessing that behind the scenes, the losties are making water runs to and fro the caves?

I've always assumed they go back to the caves for the water, but they don't want to live there (too dangerous).

I'm pretty sure that Michael rigged up a system in season 1 for transporting water from the caves, sort of like an aquaduct.

I assumed all the tarps holding water were collecting rainwater, rather than just holding water gathered from the caves. Before seeing Kate fill up at one in TTID, we saw the tarps used to collect water in a couple of episodes back in early S2 - a conversation between Jack & Rose while Jack's filling his water botle comes to mind (early S2). I assumed TPTB showed the tarps and figured that question had been addressed - rainwater seems much more likely than daily trips into the jungle, and I think Michael's bamboo aqueduct wasn't completed because he started working on the raft instead.

Interestingly, the blue-tarp rainwater collector was shown in the pilot episode. Water became a problem when it didn't rain, so they had to look for an other source. In season 2, the rainwater bin was reintroduced. (Jack plopped his stray golf ball into it.)

For ~50 Losties, a couple of blue tarps of water isn't enough. They gotta be making water runs behind the scenes.

Gotta admit I do love the losties kitchen and pantry with oceanside view.

I never really think of how they get their water. We've seen them find the water supply in season 1. I just assume that they still get it from there. It would be sort of monotonous to see them going to fetch water all the time wouldn't it?

You're remembering it wrong, that was a shower system, so they wouldn't be bathing in the drinking water. There was never any method of getting water from the caves to the beach other than carrying it in bottles.

I just think this is another unrealistic aspect of the show we're meant to not notice. Like the 20 year old beer being drinkable and the 20 year old rusted engine with weeds growing through it being able to run on 20 year old gasoline. Or 50+ people surviving the crash of a plane that broke apart mid-air. Or Kate tasting "like strawberries" when she hadn't brushed her teeth or bathed in days. Or the group of castaways that didn't even attempt to use Desmond's boat to find rescue. Or the countless treks into the jungle for no other reason than boredom when they know it contains a monster that brutally killed one of their people just days ago. Or the... yeah, nevermind. Look how hot Sawyer is!!!

Yuck, I know, I thought the beer would be totally disgusting and I don't know why anyone would want to drink it. Figures that Sawyer did it, he's nuts and looks like he would drink beer that was rancid for ages!! About Kate, I don't know if she brushed her teeth or not, but she did take a shower when Tom brang her some new clothes. It wasn't that long after that Sawyer kissed her.
