ventro 03-14-2007, 10:02 PM Awesome, awesome episode. Loved the fence bit, and the ending. Everything about this episode was done so well, from the new score parts to the direction. I loved the letter at the end too.
i have to agree. this was a pretty good epi. mind you...the last few havent been the greatest. loved the ending. perfect Lost ending.
Chrono333 03-14-2007, 11:26 PM AMAZING. That's all I have to say. It's getting better and better, and it's all leading up to next week. I physically can't wait!!!
BillToons 03-14-2007, 11:52 PM For all the warts (never knowing what's really going on) this is one of the best shows ever on TV. I can't wait to see the next episode.
Angela12 03-15-2007, 12:02 AM Man oh man!!
The ending of this episode just knocked me off my feet! I thought I was dreaming it for a second!!
palomino_grl78 03-15-2007, 12:05 AM Loved it. It was great to see Claire do something other than play mommy. And I sort of dug the football scene at the end. This is one of my favorites this season.
ToKyO 03-15-2007, 12:05 AM Best ending ever..lol Jack spiking the ball will be forever branded onto my memory..haha
Betsy 03-15-2007, 12:10 AM Boy, did I LOVE this episode; my girl never fails to deliver. Emilie is such a wonderful actress -she was brilliant tonight. Claire at various times was overjoyed, angry, vulnerable, sorrowful........and Emilie conveyed all her emotions beautifully.
Can I just say again how much I love John Terry and Christian? He's a wonderful actor and Christian is a good man, despite his flaws. He truly loves his daughter (awwww about the singing to Claire as a baby!)...........I hope Claire realizes that one day.
Also, it just doesn't get better than Claire and Charlie; they looked so happy together when Charlie sprung his picnic surprise on her........and then at the end, when she took his hand and told him that they would get through this together? Wow - you want to talk about true love and really amazing chemistry? It's all there, as effortless as can be. The writers would be incredibly stupid to kill Charlie and destroy this couple before they can even get started; these two deserve a happy ending.......make that, these 3 with baby Aaron. That's for another thread, though. C/C tonight? Simply perfect.
Sawyer was adorable, too - Auntie Sun and Uncle Jin? For some reason, I get a kick out of that. LOL
Hurry up please and let's get some Jack and Claire- I LOVE LOVE LOVE where this is going.
Ooh, nice reminder - Tom and Jack playing football? Classic!!!
LostLaura 03-15-2007, 12:10 AM Really great episode. Claire always has great episodes. It was great to finally see more of her off-island back story, along with the anticipated revelation about the siblings. Good to see Christian without Jack. Loved the ending montage. Hate Locke, love Sayid and Kate. Love Danielle. Loved the fence, monkey Kate, and the scary death of Mikhail. Loved the surprising (not if you were spoiled, dammit!) ending with Jack and Tom. Love Charlie and Claire. Loved Sawyer accidentally using a nickname. Loved Claire-time minus Aaron-time. Loved Sun and Jin having screentime, and Jin using English.
Solid.
Punky 03-15-2007, 12:10 AM AMAZING. That's all I have to say. It's getting better and better, and it's all leading up to next week. I physically can't wait!!!
Ditto.
ETA: Hi LostLaura!
Great episode. Best of the season so far. If next episode is good (as I highly, highly suspect it will be--they know that they can't mess this one up) I think it's fair to say that the old Lost is back. We'll see, but my bet is the Big Turnaround is (finally!) over. It's all uphill from here. It will be interesting to see if and how they can slowly build the audience back. It's been holding pretty steady, which is a good sign.
Also...aw, man, I *still* can't talk about it! Bummer. Well, just wait and see. I'm more confident than ever that I've been 100% right all along.
(In retrospect, "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" seems like a bit of fun for TPTB before the work began.)
lostgurl 03-15-2007, 12:22 AM Great episode. One thing you can always count on - Claire having a brilliant flashback episode. All of her's have been great so far. She really frustrates me sometimes because she's not given much to do on the island, so we dont get a chance to see her "shine" until she gets an episode. She was brilliant tonight.
Patchy death - whoa!
Locke - creepy!
Sawyer catching himself about to use a nickname.
Loved the Charlie/Claire letter scene.
I also loved Jin's little frusterated grunt when Desmond shoots the gun when they were trying to catch that bird.
brermike 03-15-2007, 12:26 AM Another great episode! Most of the cast was utilized effectively, interesting and well-acted flashback, excellent mission plot, tagged bird wasn't as lame as I thought when I read a spoiler about it, music was great as usual, well written dialog, and surprising ending. This was all around a classic Lost episode. I'm so curious as to what's up with Locke. He's definitely back to season 1 Locke where he was out only for himself and his destiny. I love it :)
ZoeWashburne 03-15-2007, 12:27 AM While it wasn't quite as thrilling as last week, I still thought it was a really good episode. It still had good content and really seemed like a good set-up for next week.
And we got more info and answers! I was happy when Kate kept pestering Patchy about the list. That's what we've wanted to see, so it's good to see them finally getting some answers!
And I really liked Claire and Sun's interactions. That's one of the things I've missed most this season - the relationships between the characters, especially the ladies. So it was great to see them together. And I thought the scenes with Charlie and Claire were cute. It's good to see them working through their issues.
skyjuice 03-15-2007, 12:34 AM This show is approaching red hot status.
I'm feeling it.
Dr_Do_Right 4 8 15 16 23 42 03-15-2007, 12:34 AM WOW.... probably one of my FAVORITE episodes EVER. Claire/Jack half brother and sister..who didnt see that one coming but still...awesome. The whole Charlie thing was again pretty cool and JACK IS BACK!!!! yesssss. He was brainwashed...I can feel it. R.I.P. Patchy...you were a good man.
JackBauerLost 03-15-2007, 12:37 AM Loved this one. Finally confirmation on our Jack/Claire suspicions. Rousseau explaining her lack of interest in details about Alex. Locke acting really fishy. Jack bringing in a touchdown pass from Zeke.
I just hope that bird doesn't land on water.
Save The Humans 03-15-2007, 12:42 AM While it wasn't quite as thrilling as last week, I still thought it was a really good episode. It still had good content and really seemed like a good set-up for next week.
Indeed!!
LOST is back! LOST is back! :happy_bounce:
All that effort C/J/S made with nets and fish and stuff--and Desmond just strolls over to a resting bird and picks it up! :71:
Hey, it's the little things, as well as the big ones, yeah?
Jin's English is getting better and better, too, isn't it?
And Claire's line when Sun asked her where she was going, and her answer was: "To get some answers!" (Claire, honey, every poster on this site can dig THAT! :D)
Plus, we were told WHAT DAY IT IS! When Charlie was reading Claire's note, it said that they'd been there 80 days. So we are in DAY 80! How nice of TPTB to help us keep our timeline straight! (Just as they are starting to mess with the very CONCEPT of time, yes. But, hey, you take what you can get! :wink1:)
lockesmithe 03-15-2007, 12:42 AM I thought this was a good episode, and I gave it a 9 over on the rating thread. It fell short of a 10 only because the Claire story line was a little weak (for some reason I cringe when I see Claire and Charlie getting sappy together). Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed seeing Emilie get some screen time. While watching tonight's episode, I couldn't help but to think that we Lost viewers have been cheated out of seeing Emilie with a substantial plot. Of course, this could be said about so many of the ensemble cast. John Terry has a certain on-screen presence, and it was good to see him once again, even though I don't like his character. I'll have to compliment the casting director(s) for Lost for a job well done beginning with the pilot.
The Locke and company adventure scenes were particularly engrossing, and I enjoyed the banter between Locke and Sayid. Patchy had some good lines himself, and his demise at the sonic weapon fence (LOLed at that one) was pretty cool. Locke is back, and badder than before. What the heck is his agenda? Locke certainly didn't like where Patchy was going about the paralysis. The promo for next week was outstanding (as much as a minute or so promo can be).
The ending was nothing short of fantastic. Even being spoiled somewhat for that scene, I nevertheless loved it. That was some great stuff.
All in all, I get the feeling that Lost has climbed out of a rut. The time we spent with the Others sounded great upon first hearing about it. However, what makes Lost click for me is the sense of adventure (on one of the most beautiful locations in the world--not in a hatch or a building) and mystery. And, of course, with more screen time with the wonderful cast (all of them) of Lost. Job well done with Par Avion.
unhans 03-15-2007, 12:46 AM Yes! Finally a REALLY good episode again. The ending was spot on and Patchy's little speech gave me goosebumps!
And why oh why did danielle prevent him from telling us the bit about john..
Jynes 03-15-2007, 12:54 AM The locations were so beautiful in this eppy. The location where Patchy almost called out Locke on is paralysis was sooooo beautiful. Even if you did not enjoy this episode you could just look at the marvellous locations in awe.
Aurora10 03-15-2007, 01:14 AM I LOVED this episode. Not just the island stuff but the flashback, as well. That was brilliant! Cheers to you all who thought he was Claire's dad. The last part with Claire talking to her mom was so heart breaking.
Jack playing football. NICE. Can't wait to see what's up with that. I had the same expression Kate did when she saw him.
briar910 03-15-2007, 01:19 AM LOVED IT! It was way better than I had anticipated. And even though I read spoilers, I was pleasently surprised many times in this episode. Lindsay was not Claire's mum. Didn't see that one coming and it was so heartbreaking to see Claire pregnant at the end apologizing to her. Patchy's death=very disturbing, but well done. All the character interactions were so good. Claire's letter was awesome and the music was beautiful as well.
Awesome stuff and looks like it is just going to get better.
McGuane 03-15-2007, 01:35 AM I'm partial to Claire episodes, they have never let me down yet, so I was an easy mark tonight. I thought the episode looked beautiful visually as well.
So my good disposition allows me to love the ep even with the biggest continuity gaffe in Lost history. See the superbly-named "Disowned by a Vegetable" thread below for further discussion on how exactly Comatose Mom went about disowning Claire.
I gripe all the time about the lack of answers/lack of questions, but strangely it never makes me mad when the show gives us the finger with lines like Danielle's about not really wanting answers. In fact, there were several lines about asking questions and getting or not getting answers tonight, which I found funny.
I loved the subtle and under-dramatic way Claire found out about the Charlie death prophecy, and the quiet way she responded to him about it. Very effective. I know some will find that last scene with Claire and Charlie and his reading the note a bit cheesy, but I liked it. I do wish Claire would not sort of use Aaron every time she's p.oed at Chaalie. Liked the flashbacks for giving us a surprising look at a Lostie, and if I hadn't been spoiled on it for about two years, a surprising twist connection.
Count my group as among those who totally called for Des to shoot that released bird out of the sky like a clay pigeon. But seriously, the bird idea was alot smarter than it sounded in the spoilers, thanks to the tags. Note was a wee bit wordy for note purposes, but good for Chaalie inspiration purposes.
I thought Emile was terrific, amazing what she can do everytime she gets to knock off all that rust and actually have lines and stuff. Might it dawn on someone somewhere in TPTBville that giving her say, one of Jack's 58 or 59 flashbacks so she has more than one a decade might be a good idea?
That said, I was a bit distracted in her big emotional goodbye scene with ComaMom by thinking that big ole blue vein in her head was gonna pop and give us our second head explode scene of the night. Sorry to be so shallow Emile, you were really good.
I also liked the jungle action and the ending, an actual third straight good ep! On a roll baby!
SenatorKent 03-15-2007, 01:48 AM Everything about this episode was absolutely brilliant. Definitely one of my favorites ever.
Emile's acting was some of the best on TV. Her scene with her mom made me want to cry.
The scene between Kate and Rousseau....amazing!
The jungle stuff with Locke and Sayid and Patchy....awesome.
Claire, Desmond, Charlie....great.
Claire's flashbacks....superb.
Ending......cataclysmic.
Talon 03-15-2007, 01:52 AM I had given this episode an 8. I really liked how we learned more by having Kate question Patchy.
I really liked the Locke and Sayid confrontation, though I was a little upset at how erratic Locke has been acting. Why did he lie about having explosives in his pack? Why is he doing things without consulting Kate and Sayid? Next week's promo clarified that a bit.
But I really liked the episode- I was actually getting into it again and feeling better about where it is going. I didn't like the device of having Danielle interrupt Patchy as he was talking to Locke, preventing us from learning any more info.
I am not a big Jack fan, but it was a nice shocking moment to see Jack having fun catching the football with Tom. Tom, who back in Season One seemed so dastardly and evil for taking Walt, now seems like a big teddy bear. Funny how that has worked out.
Sawyer was funny with catching himself about to use a nickname, and I enjoyed seeing Jin as well.
I am really looking forward to next week's flashback, and what Locke is really after on this quest- should be good...
Yes, I did! It was great fun...the way LOST should be.
100%
But...how, how HOW could Jack be playing football with TOM, and smiling about it??? I hope it's cuz he has A Plan.
lostfan4ever 03-15-2007, 02:10 AM Best of the season for utilizing most of the cast effectively. Claire's flashback helped add credence to her trust issues on the island. Great C/C action for us shippers. Charlie and Claire on the beach at the end was their best scene yet. The writers just HAVE to let Charlie live so that this relationship can blossom. The jungle trek was an excellent Bstory. The scene at the end with Jack was really good. This is like the LOST of old. If anything can bring the viewers back its episodes like this.
Baileysdad 03-15-2007, 02:11 AM Finally a flashback that means something...talk about answering a major question.
The search party...all seemlingly having different reasons for being there..Patchy getting his brain fried...talk about Locke turning coldblooded..wow. What was up with that C-4 in his pack?
Great to see Christian again.
And the end? Jack and Tom having a catch in Otherville?? WOW...the looks on all their faces. What on earth was that all about?
That is three in a row...I hope they keep this up..
and from the preview...looks like the episode of a lifetime next week
Melissa 03-15-2007, 02:19 AM Finally a flashback that means something...talk about answering a major question.

I totally agree. This was a great episode and it looks like it's only going to get better! Lost is back baby and going out this season with a bang!!!
Lost_in_CA 03-15-2007, 02:49 AM This was one of the best episodes in a long while! I enjoyed saying "Knew it!" when Jack's dad revealed he was Claire's dad (my DH didn't believe me when I said so long ago). :) Claire's last scene with her mom was heartbreaking and made me think her guilt played into her plans to give up her baby - as if she weren't worthy enough to be a single mom like her own mother.
But the ending was a shocker! I thought Jack was trying to get away and he would be shot. I was all ready to scream NOOOOO!!!!!!! Then my mouth just dropped open and I stared in dazed confusion, just like Kate. ARGH! Jack can NOT be brainwashed already! He is pretending or at least that's what I'm going to believe until proven otherwise.
fear plastic 03-15-2007, 03:07 AM Awww, this episode was awesome. Ugh! Kate's face was freakin' priceless!
Tiny Time Machine 03-15-2007, 04:29 AM Fantastic episode! I can't tell you how weird it feels to love a new episode of Lost for me. It's been so long. I've liked episodes recently, but not loved.
Emilie De Ravin is awesome.
As are Naveen Andrews, Mira Furlan, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim and John Terry.
SO glad to see Claire, Jin and Sun getting some time in the spotlight.
No Nikki and Paulo!!
Mikhail's death was - even though I liked the character - fantastic. I love it when Lost is inventive with things like that. That whole perimeter fence thing was awesome.
Claire's flashback is my favourite flashback since 'Deus Ex Machina'. For reals.
Danielle is fantastic.
I'm so glad that Locke's "oops, i didn't it again" moment from last week's episode has some unexpected depth to it. I'm really interested to learn what his motivations are.
I, like many many many other people, called the Jack/Claire siblings thing back when 'Two For The Road' aired. Glad to see that come true. I wonder if Claire and Jack will ever find out though, since Claire doesn't even know Christian's name.
The ending was very very cool. I'm really glad to see Jack again, though I'm sure a lot of people aren't.
Most importantly, though, I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK!
vangelicmonk 03-15-2007, 04:51 AM Great Episode. This season has been up and down, but still no Episode has been absolutely awful. Each one brings it's own quality and a few have been right on the mark. Great stuff.
penyours 03-15-2007, 04:57 AM Loved the fence, monkey Kate
LOL, monkey kate was amusing, though it's quite convenient the director gave her so much screen time climbing that fence.
Loved the surprising (not if you were spoiled, dammit!) ending with Jack and Tom.
That WAS a great ending, it's probably going to go down as one of my favourite endings all time on Lost, ,mainly because of how much it caught me off guard and me to react, I got out of my seat, started pounding my couch and laughed and yelped at how well they pulled it off!
Loved Sun and Jin having screentime, and Jin using English.
This was good to see as well! Sun and Jin should have dinner parties with Claire and Charlie  and I loved how relavent and revealing Claire's FB was.
lostfan72 03-15-2007, 05:15 AM I liked this episode too. However I didn't think the ending with Jack was a big deal. I think he's just trying to make the best of a bad situation. I mean anybody would rather at least try to enjoy thier time in Othersville instead of moping around.
Gfoxx 03-15-2007, 05:21 AM Another awesome episode!!!! I usually can't stand Claire and find her character to be quite annoying but I enjoyed her in this episode and her flashback. Enjoyed the search party. Locke pushing Patchy into the security system was something else! Locke is just getting stranger and stranger. Also enjoying the increasing tension between Locke and Sayid. The last scene with Jack playing football with The Others was great and I can't wait until next week's episode. Lost is definitely back!!!!!!
palomino_grl78 03-15-2007, 06:53 AM I loved this episode. One of my favorites this season. It was great to see Claire doing something else besides playing mommy. Her fb's were so sad, I almost cried, and I don't cry at tv much. I felt so bad for her.
I really liked the ending with Jack playing football with Tom. If I were in his shoes, I don't think I would want to leave all of the creature comforts of Otherville to go back to the beach and eat fruit salad a la Hurley. It will be interestign to see if Jack does want to leave if rescued.
dangerousdirk 03-15-2007, 08:28 AM I really liked this episode! first of all, never thought Claire was that hot, but I like her MUCH more in her Goth look. What a bombshell about Claire and Jack being brother and sister! now THAT'S the Lost that I fell in love with!
Finally, the barracks!
wilekiyote 03-15-2007, 08:53 AM Gotta say that the past few episodes including this one have been up there with Seasons 1 and 2. I'm going to forget that the mini season 3 ever existed. Awesome!!!!
lostlocke 03-15-2007, 09:02 AM The episode was solid, anyone has to admit that. They incorporated alot of characters into the one episode and alot of storylines as well. You had Locke, Sayid,Kate and Danielle, then Claire, Sun, Jin and Charlie and Desmond's story as well. That was great. I miss seeing everyone in a single episode. The ending was great too. Jack's face was really funny when he threw that ball down!! Doesn't look like he's suffering much does it?! Maybe he won't want to be rescued.
Mantorras 03-15-2007, 09:14 AM Definitely one of my all time favourites :)
Everything worked so well, the flashbacks, the twists, the birds (another mistery?), the cliffhanger.... everything!
IslandofFaith 03-15-2007, 09:28 AM Loved the episode! Nice balance of both FB's/Island Time and Beach/Jack Expedition. Storyline advanced like the good 'ol days of season 1. Claire's character is finally being brought out of the shadows. Can't wait until next week. Locke episodes are among my favorites!
thedaveeyres 03-15-2007, 09:28 AM Great Ep.
I love the direction the writers are taking Locke and felt I got to know more about Claire's character than I have in two seasons.
Loved it.
Fligirl625 03-15-2007, 09:36 AM Lost is back!!! This episode was fantastic. Love when they use most of the cast and Emilie was amazing. Locke, Locke what is going on with you?? Can't wait till next week. As frustrating as it is not getting many answers just more puzzling questions, it's one of the reasons I love Lost so much!!! Great job!!!
Blue Coral 03-15-2007, 09:40 AM I loved the episode. Claire's backstory was excellent. The adventure in the jungle was also just as fun to watch. And the ending with Jack?? That was sooo good! I can't wait to see what happens next.
Juniebun 03-15-2007, 10:16 AM Great episode. Evil Locke is approaching. Next week looks ginormously fanstastic! When is Jack gonna find out about Claire? I think that Patchy got what he wanted. Ooops! Did Locke mean to say that he didn't know about the C-4? Silly him! ;)
jj9126 03-15-2007, 10:22 AM -The rhythm of the show is back.
-Excellent balance between mystery, drama and humor.
-Best Cliffhanger in two years.
-Goth Claire ascends to the top of the "hot female regulars" list.
Par Avion could comfortably fit in with any Season One episode. Fantastic job all around.
Perkz 03-15-2007, 11:13 AM :) Gave me that good ol' LOST feelin' :)
ILoveLichido 03-15-2007, 11:32 AM One of the best episodes of LOST ever!!! I felt like I got hit in the gut at the end..
lambchops972 03-15-2007, 11:34 AM I agree with everyone that said that this felt like a season one episode. I was spoiled on Jack and Claire but the scene where it was revealed was really good. The facial expressions were right on target. To see Jack's dad seem kind of soft took me aback.
The end with Jack was great. I had this feeling of freakiness and then when I saw the look on Kate's face I started howling with laughter. I couldn't help it.
Great episode
Sarah-luvs-Dom 03-15-2007, 11:55 AM was it just me or did charlies eyes seem EXTREMLY blue in this epi? ahh i was a puddle the entire episode. ::crush:
Another great episode, just confirming the fact that season 3 has most definatly got going.
It's a pity so many people had guessed the Jack/Claire link (was it maybe too obvious, especially after the "broken link" as a connection in the season 2 DVD? I don't generally call these things correctly, but I was pretty confident about that one), because it was handled very well and I wish I'd have been more shocked. Slightly annoyed Claire didn't want to know her father's name. Seemed like a bit of a cop out, so that they don't have to hear complaints about Claire never guessing a connection. I'm holding out hope that she does know his name though. Having said that, it'll be very interesting how they work in the reveal now.
Adored Locke in this episode. To me it adds fuel to my suspicion he was told more by the computer than he is revealing. The fact he had time after using the computer to then go and find some of the C4, surely this means he knew when it was going to explode, or maybe he timed the explosion himself? He has always been amongst my favourite characters, but this episode solidifyed it.
And according to the previews, next week is going to be a great Locke-centric episode. I can't wait.
Mikhail's death was great, as was his revealing how much he knew about the Losties. Clearly he knew their names (full-names, that sort of information doesn't just crop up), and has met/seen/knows of Locke from a previous expirience.
The ending was also well done, despite having my suspicions he would be more entangled with the Others than you'd expect, I genuinly thought he was making a run for it. Until Kate was stopped from shouting, then you know something wasn't right. Nice reveal, and as I expected, after a few episode without Jack, I was excited by his appearance again.
Overall I was delighted with this episode, so much so that I thought the weakest element was Claire's beach story (which in itself was a solid part of the show). Lost is very much back in fine form.
Guinevere 03-15-2007, 01:32 PM I thought this was a great episode because it showed more of Claire's personality and how she's hasn't always been the sweetest girl on the planet. It gave her a little depth, I thought. Also, it did answer the question most of us had been wanting to know about her - if she was Jack's sister! Too bad they will probably never know that, though.
The expedition scenes had just the right balance of questions answered to questions to be asked - such as how Mikhail could have know all their FULL names to where he had seen Locke and mentioned more about Jacob's list. What is Locke's game anyway? Does he have a hidden agenda? Why did Danielle distract the group just about the time Mikhail was giving information (I know, I know, it was written like that! :)) ?
I figured the 80 days from the crash and that works out to two weeks before Christmas - Decemeber 11th! Wonder if they will eve acknowledge it in upcoming episodes?? I really love Claire's note and the scene where they released the bird and her realization that not only should Charlie be there for her, she needs to be there for Charlie as well - a very maturing moment, I thought.
The last scene was priceless! All in all, it seems like Lost is getting better and better and I didn't think that was possible. We just have to remember that in order for it to be this good, we needed to know some of the background stuff that was happening to begin with and I think that helps us appreciate how great this episode really was.
LostKlone 03-15-2007, 01:41 PM Locke definitely meant to kill patchy. It’s no secret that he (and Rousseau for that matter) didn’t like the fact that someone who told their little search party that he’s basically waiting for the moment that they drop their guard, and that he wouldn’t hesitate to kill them was being kept alive. The fact is, we basically can’t trust anything that Mikhail said. I tend to believe the story he was telling about “The Purge” in the last episode, because the easiest lies to tell are often the ones that are half-true, but the level of dedication to the secretive nature of their existence makes The Others hard to gauge and almost impossible to trust. All in all, I would much rather test whether or not a security perimeter fence/trap was still working by sacrificing a prisoner (or a pawn, if you like to look at it in terms of a chess game, which the situation on the island most definitely is more often than not) rather than have Kate or Sayid try walking through it to see what will happen.
Locke is like a military general…think back to his first flashback episode (“Tabula Rosa” – Season 1, ep. 3) where he was playing “Risk” or “Axis & Allies” or whatever military strategy board game he was playing during his lunch hour with a co-worker. His opponent said something to him about a development in the game and Locke’s response was “Patience, GL12, is the hallmark of a leader.” We see that recently Kate hasn’t been too good in the patience department, and Sayid doesn’t share Locke’s faith in the supernatural elements of what’s happening on the island, so he’s taking more time strategizing in his own mind before divulging details and information. It’s very much like when the White House decides how much and what info to share with the public. I think Locke is trying to anticipate and cut-down on the many mistakes that our survivors have been making all this time by leaping before they look. Locke is a thinker, plain and simple. I think all of his actions are in an effort to help their side win. I don’t think he’s turning on the survivors.
From the beginning the producers have said they look at the adventures on LOST unfolding as they would in a video game. If you were Locke’s character in a video game, and came across some C4, you’d probably hold on to some because, “you never know what a little C4 might come in handy.” Any experienced gamer would agree with me on that. I do agree that Locke probably got more info than we, as the audience, have been privy to at this point when he entered 77 into the computer. Logically, the self-destruct count-down would’ve been initiated, and the computer would tell the person who entered 77 to leave the building immediately. OR, the computer could’ve instructed him to go down into the basement of the station and activate the explosives manually, which would explain why Locke found the C4 and was able to take some instead of blowing it all up. OR, there could’ve been a single C4 charge sitting on a table next to the computer or on a work-bench behind where he was sitting at the computer, as it seemed to be an equipment room of some kind. The fact is, we just don’t know, and trying to understand the controversy of a situation like that without all the pertinent information leads to incidents like Ana Lucia shooting Shannon. Everyone needs to learn to take a few seconds and think things through before taking drastic action. Jack has proved this time and time again on this show.
I’m actually a little surprised that the security perimeter was even still working, when you consider that all communications have been down since the Hatch Explosion from the Season 2 finale. I do think it was strangely vulnerable to people being able to get over the fence, but look at how they’ve limited their ability to exit the same way. If they were being pursued by The Others, they wouldn’t be able to take the time to cut down a tree and build a support and climb over, so unless they find a way to turn the perimeter off, they’ve kinda shot themselves in the foot. At this point, we don’t know if there was some sort of threat on the island that would’ve made going over more dangerous…maybe back in the days when the four-toed statue was still intact. Who knows…
Jack…is obviously “undercover” in his situation with The Others. (Remember: “He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us.”) He’s put himself into a power-position as Ben’s personal physician, but he’s also put himself in a very dangerous and delicate position, as his true motive seems to be to force Ben to be true to his word. He’s also forged a silent alliance with Juliet, and in order to distance himself from suspicion, he needs to play along with the situation. I think when he sacrificed himself so that Kate and Sawyer could escape, he basically started to “let things go”, as his father was always trying to get him to do. He accepted that Kate wants to be with Sawyer, and he did what was in his power to do in order to save them, but from then on, he’s on his own…and his only goal is to get off the island and back to the real world. Of course, now that we know there’s someone above Ben in this equation, it’ll be interesting to see if the deal is still honored. (I doubt it will be. Jack is not a traitor either.)
Lost_In_NJ 03-15-2007, 01:53 PM Absolutely loved it from the opening credits, to the ending credits. And the promo for next week...OMG! I can't wait!
Lockefan 03-15-2007, 03:04 PM LOVED IT! I think the key word here is "classic", as in, it had all the classic elements that make LOST great. So as not to repeat myself, I link now to my comments in "Rate The Episode":
http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?p=1431573&posted=1#post1431573
Danelectro 03-15-2007, 03:48 PM Great one. I love the interaction between Sayid and Locke. I knew exactly what Sayid would say when Locke criticised Sayid for relying too much on the map.
I loved the scene when Mikhail revealed how much he knows about them. His death was shocking and powerful, especially because of his last words. The ending was great too. To see Jack playing with the Others, after we always only saw him so angry around them. The flashback was not so great, though, although I like Shephard Sr.
erin1679 03-15-2007, 03:52 PM I loved it. Claire looked good with dark hair, she should go back to black :) I'm glad the whole Claire/Jack siblings thing is finally out in the open.
chrissymonster 03-15-2007, 04:55 PM LOVED IT!!!! Love love love loved it!!
I had to catch it on ABC.com (10 pm is too late for this mommy!), but it was worth the wait!
Only thing missing was my Hurley fix... :frown:
wannabef 03-15-2007, 04:58 PM The thing that made this seem like a "classic," season one LOST was the pacing. I'm not one to complain about the show much, but rather trust TPTB to take us along on a well-planned ride. Last night's ride was perfect, though -- jolting cold open in Claire's flashback (can we just make it a rule that EVERY ep start with an ECU on an eyeball?) that cuts to Claire waking on the beach (two eyeballs for the price of one!) and then quickly jumping over to the rescue party. I think the early eppys of this season got mired down in a single storyline or location. None of that here. Brilliant editing! (And I should know -- I'm an editor from way back.)
The other element that made it classic was the use of the flashback not only as plot, but for thematic underpinning. Claire regrets keeping her mother on life support to assuage her own guilt. Now she is living on a form of life support herself, accepting her lostie fate. Though it may be unrealistic, looking for a way home is her attempt at truly living.
The perfect counterpoint to that is Locke. Has anyone ever wanted so badly not to go home? It's like the poor kid who gets to sleepover at a rich friend's house and tries to stay over as long as possible. He took the C4 with the sub in mind, and he knocked off Bakunin because he almost revealed Locke's secret. Next week should be epic!
JanesAddiction72 03-15-2007, 05:20 PM Loved this episode it was awesome. I am a huge Locke fan so I just thought this eppy was great. Loved the ending it was priceless, the look on Kate's face was shock, Sayid disbelief, and Locke almost a hint of a smile. All just from watching Jack play a little football with Mr. Friendly/Tom. PURE GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tiewashere 03-15-2007, 05:36 PM I love all Claire episodes but this one is my all time favorite episode probably for the show. Claire rarely does things that are significant and they hold it all in until she has her flashbacks. I ALSO LOVED HER GOTH LOOK!
LostInJack 03-15-2007, 06:02 PM Loved it , totally cool, these are the ep's that make Lost a worldwide winner. :)
Ebdim9th 03-15-2007, 06:15 PM ~Wannabef~ great call on Locke's intended use for the C-4. Makes sense as to why he intentionally blew up the Flame Hatch. He doesn't. Want. To leave. The island.
This show is lightning in a bottle!!! (And Darlton are shakin' it up)
irish lost fan 03-15-2007, 06:24 PM I loved this episode! I don't have one thing to complain about. Loved every bit of it, I didn't want the epiosde to end!
davereese 03-15-2007, 06:43 PM Lost is back! Maybe not all the way back, it's still missing some of that sense of mystery from the first season but I don't know that feeling can ever be recaptured. On the other hand, TPTB have finally gotten away from the Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Others-centric story lines and focusing solely on one storyline at a time. TPTB are finally getting back to ensemble episodes that mix characters, story-lines, and plots. TPTB are finally getting back to developing the characters who had made the Lost palate so full and rich - Sayid, Claire, Charlie, Hurley, Sun, and Jin. TPTB aren't beating Desmond's backstory to death at the expense of other characters. Instead, they are weaving Desmond's backstory and character into the fabric of the original Losties stories and characters. I have to admit my faith in TPTB was getting low, very very very low and I was starting to feel more frustration than enjoyment when watching Lost. The TPTB have proven me wrong and won me back on to their side. The show is fun to watch again.
dave
p.s. - black hair Claire was scorching HOT
gigil115 03-15-2007, 08:35 PM :kiss:Didn't quite love, but liked it alot! The Jack scene was so ironic & unexpected, it was almost funny. Wonder if it was meant to be? Why did he look so happy playing ball with his new best friend? Was it an act to try and escape?
entil2001 03-15-2007, 08:52 PM I've been looking forward to this episode ever since the first promotional shot was released. I've been waiting for certain characters to get the spotlight again, and I'm finally getting my wish. The character at the center of this episode is a particular favorite, and I was quite pleased. Thankfully, I'm not one to be annoyed with transitional episodes, so that didn't detract from the overall effort. I'm just very pleased with the state of "Lost" lately!
Here's my review for Lost 3.12: "Par Avion":
http://entil2001.com/series/lost/season3/lost3-12.html
Overall, this episode is essentially a transitional piece, but one that manages to overcome that limitation by focusing on a character that desperately needed the attention. Some of the revelations in this episode were predictable, but even if the answers are expected, they remain answers. This was a good character piece that fits very well with the beach-centric tales since the end of the hiatus.
Lockerox 03-15-2007, 10:14 PM Really good ep. What the heck is Locke's deal? Can't wait for next week!!!!
DrUrbino 03-15-2007, 10:51 PM Absolutely loved it... Claire is my favorite Character on the show and I really think this episode was perfect. :)
asupermane 03-15-2007, 11:08 PM Loved this Episode! I think Lost only gets better and better and better!
The writers are doing a terrific job! I know that next weeks episode is only going to be even more awesome. Gotta love the Great White Hunter.
outta_control 03-15-2007, 11:41 PM Great episode! Can't wait till next week. Two thumbs up!!!
Melian 03-16-2007, 12:17 AM I really liked this episode. To me, it brought back the old Lost feel. I think they had forgotten you can include two different stories in the same episode. I'm glad we finally got to know Claire a bit better, and I think this episode is really building up next week's. I hope it's as good as I expect.
andy_candy 03-16-2007, 12:51 AM Good Ep. But we knew Sheperd was Claires Daddy, that was a prominent theory. No shocker in there
BOBBY 03-16-2007, 01:15 AM loved it, loved it, loved it !! thank god kate started to ask questions !!
Ebdim9th 03-16-2007, 01:31 AM Whatever's up with Locke, he, like Danielle, may have had past dealings with shady characters who turned out to be related to Dharma and the Hostiles, but I think he sought redemption to wash the taste of ashes out of his mouth left over from whatever he did before, (shooting or blowing up the undercover cop?) as did Danielle and they both wound up on the island as a result. After all, in the preveiw at the end of the episode, he was plainly threatening Ben, not reporting in to him as an underling.
CountChocula 03-16-2007, 03:22 AM If anyone didn't like this episode, they're NEVER going to like an episode of Lost. I can't understand how anyone could post in the "didn't love it" thread.
Sure you can nitpick certain things (like Claire not waterproofing the note, or Australia having socialized medicine, meaning patients don't have to pay). But if someone didn't like this episode -- the best this season and one of Lost's best overall -- they simply will never like anything.
restlessherbalist 03-16-2007, 05:32 AM The plot is moving! Best cliffhanger since end of season one.
Ovenberg 03-16-2007, 06:58 AM This episode really brought back the old feelings, I used to have all the way back in Season 1. Season 3 is already better than Season 2 was, and if the episodes continue to improve like they do... And talk about a great cliffhanger at the end! It was shocking although slightly amusing! Simply loved everything about this episode. This is the best S3 episode along with "Flashes Before Your Eyes".
Trevski 03-16-2007, 06:59 AM All of the Locke & Gang moments were brilliant....among the best this season. Great opening and ending too. The backstory was very well acted and pretty Star Wars as far as the underlying story went. I'm pretty certain Jack and Claire will find out they're brother and sister and I get the impression that Jack's dad has a bigger part to play in this all somewhere in the future.
Hurleydude4815 03-16-2007, 10:49 AM I loved this episode. The past three have been my favorites this season. It's really nice to see the ensemble back together, that's the show that I love. I can't wait for next week!
GuanaGirlGetsLost 03-16-2007, 12:34 PM Ahhh... It really is back to the Old Lost that I loved from Season I !!!
Ebdim9th 03-16-2007, 01:05 PM Claire finding a way to get off the island is rather season 1-ish, unless you count "The Other 48 Days". Paul Edwards also directed "What Kate Did" in season 2.
Team Taskmaster 03-16-2007, 05:40 PM The Team is really enjoying the exploration of the main island and the return of a storyline that follows the crash survivors more than the Others. We hear so many people shouting for more answers, but we prefer the ones that answer on question, however small, but raise so much more. And that ending raised questions!
Neefer 03-16-2007, 08:24 PM I *loved* it. It moved along smoothly and the flashbacks were nice. Especially the one with Claire & her mom when she was pregnant. It was so touching.
The ending was awesome, I did not see that one coming and my jaw dropped.
The only thing I didn't like was SOS letter. I would have mentioned the Darhma Innitiative or something, my name, etc. And what if the bird lands in water? lol.
Other than that it was *awesome* and one of the best so far :)
crystalshpr 03-17-2007, 07:20 PM Had enough angnst to be dignified LOST ... was groovy good ...
Claire with black hair was somehow suprisingly satisfying....what's up with that?
lovelost4815162342 03-17-2007, 07:21 PM i loved this episode so much. Im gonna list some reasons why:
1. Claire centric
2. Lots of Charlie/Claire cute moments
3. The beautiful letter
4. Them holding hands!
5. Patchy dying
6. The scene between KAte and Danielle about Alex
7. Patchy scene with all of them about THE LIST!
8. Sawyers nickname being cut off
9. KAte being really strong and cool
10. THem finding Jack
11. JACK AND CLAIRE BEING BRO AND SIS!
12. Claires awesome gothicness
Kyle XY 03-17-2007, 11:06 PM Loved it thought it was the best.
ArtImitatesSex 03-18-2007, 04:29 AM What a wonderful, revealing episode. Once I saw Christian in the waiting room, I was jumping out of my seat to actually hear what I knew was about to come out of his mouth! And the end was very exciting. I cant wait for next week!
chisdavis 03-18-2007, 08:40 AM Here is why "Par Avion" is now in my list of favorite episodes:
1. I never really cared for Claire.
2. Now I really like her.
The best Lost episodes make you care for someone by revealing their flaws/weaknesses. Also, since first season, I haven't felt the Claire/Charlie relationship. Now I really like them as a couple.
Amazing episode. One of my favorite.
jacaddis 03-18-2007, 12:19 PM I was dying to see this episode and i was really enjoying it. The flashbacks of Claire were quite good and touching(im pregnant/cry scene) It was a good episode and the performance of Emilie de Ravin was better then in maternity leaves.:) but that is what i think. Anway it was a good episode .
Maurizio 03-18-2007, 05:18 PM Hi all, I'm new here :)
I've found this episode really good. The writing, the acting and the direction were great as usual. And great music score by Mike Giacchino, of course (I love the music of this show A LOT!)
As others have noticed, what I really like about Lost is that it succeed every time in making me care and feel really close to its characters. Claire's flashback in this episode is a good example: at the beginning of the episode, I didn't understand well his behavior toward his mother and his reaction to the accident... but the final scene with her talking to his mother while she's in coma made it all clear. Claire, as all the other survivors, is a lost soul in search of a meaning, a reason to go ahead with her life.
And of course the mythology is going deeper and deeper... can't wait to discover the Locke/Bakunin connection.
lovelost4815162342 03-18-2007, 05:23 PM Here is why "Par Avion" is now in my list of favorite episodes:
1. I never really cared for Claire.
2. Now I really like her.
.
YAY! Im mso happy someone has been converted into Claire-ism! hehe. Iv always loved her but recently i moved her to 5th favorite but now shes back to 3rd favorite
craigmeaders 03-18-2007, 07:31 PM I liked the episode but what does the title of the episode of to do with what went on?
only thing i thought of was sending the message on the bird but...i donno.
evanesco75 03-19-2007, 08:12 AM Overall, I did like this one. The Claire backstory was expected, but it was nice to see it finally pan out. The whole Des finding bird bit wasn't my favorite, but the scenes with Sayid etc were amazing! Crazy Locke was brilliant, and I really liked Kate in this one. All in all, a well crafted episode.
Chrysander 03-19-2007, 10:52 AM Really happy with where Lost is going now, loved this episode. Not as much violence as there could have been, but we did get to see Patch get Mortal Kombated, which was cool. Shame he didn't stick around I guess, but at least it was hilarious. Really interested in what Locke is doing. Great to see SKJD get towards the Other's camp, something which I didn't think would be happening for a while. Awesome to see Jack, made me laugh what he was doing with the ball, but it's just going to be so great to find out what is happening with him - only been a few days and already he is throwing a ball with Tom. A little bored by Claire. Can't wait for next week.
Guinevere 03-19-2007, 01:07 PM I think the title means "for the birds" but I'm not really sure about that.
tracey1302 03-20-2007, 09:29 AM A really good solid episode.
The Claire storyline with the birds was a bit boring and pointless but the flashback was really well acted by Emile. As soon as American doctor was mentioned, my Mother screamed out 'OMG it's gotta be Christian Shepherd!' The backstory was expected for me, I'm now interested to see how Jack and Claire finding out will happen, if it ever does.
The Locke-Kate-Sayid story was compelling. I half expected Patchy to get up again, in a manner of a 'dead' serial killer after his incident with the security fence thing. Locke remains an intriguing character - one of my favourites. I think Jack's words, 'If we survive tonight, we're gonna have a Locke problem' are finally ringing true. I'm constantly on edge as to whether I can trust him and that fear was reawakened in this episode.
Spectacular. Can't wait for next week.
Zatherran 03-20-2007, 09:41 AM very solid, orginal lost feeling. what i love about the show. keeping us guessing.
unlike all other show that keep telling us the outcome before the hour is up, this show keeps you guessing and wanting more.
As always i get annoyed at my own impatience of wanting to know more. but as soon as the show is over, it becomes a constant thought of all the pieces presented. like a puzzle.. no matter how frustrated i get with seeing all pieces laid out, eventually it all comes together.
I have not been disappointed any way..outstanding. i give it a 10.
HurleyForPresident 03-20-2007, 06:10 PM Another fantastic episode, they just keep getting better and better this season ;) top stuff again, 10/10
burnthevillages 03-26-2007, 04:01 PM That Christian Shepherd was Claire's father, predictable yes. But it was still a good enough episode. I was just frustrated that Claire didn't want to know his name. That was the writers won't have to worry about Jack and Claire finding out that they are siblings (for a while).
G33K3Z01D 04-09-2007, 02:28 PM This is, in my humble opinion, one of the best they've ever done.
nooai 01-01-2008, 09:52 AM I loved this episode!
The best Claire flashback episode by far.
And it makes me really connect to Claire and see where she's coming from....especially since like Claire, my dad has been absent from my life since I was very young. I never ever heard from him until now. If one day he shows up again...like Christian Shepard did.....I would react the way she did.
And I have an elder half brother too.
