So, Sayid and Kate are being held hostage. The others have foose-ball and Pool tables. Ben is brilliant. And Cooper is on the island.

fantastic episode

Just when I thought Ben was vulnerable, he was like Alex said, manipulating Locke into doing the dirty work for him.

Loved the interplay between Ben and Locke! The hamster line and the 'I hope you can imagine yourself up a new submarine' were completely made of awesome.

And as soon as Ben mentioned 'the man from Tallahassee', I suspected Cooper would be there - there were a lot of pointers to it through the episode, like the detectives saying 'he could be anywhere', but wow... I wasn't expecting to see him as a prisoner like that. BUT... is he really a prisoner, or is this another ruse?

Excellent ep. I was very pleasantly surprised. I only saw the Jack/Kate previews/ads, and was kind of expecting this one to be a snore fest about the whole relationship situation. I was happy to get a bit of clever Sayid, and great Locke-Ben convos.

03-22-2007, 12:28 AM
Wish there was more Sayid but I loved it. Loved the scenes with Ben the most and I also liked being fooled by the twist in the first scene at the disability office. We thought he was getting disability for his paralysis but it was for depression. Love that Rousseau got to see her daughter. I really liked Alex in this and the dynamic between her and Ben. Locke is still the ultimate sucker but he sure can tap into the mystical powers of the island. Ben likes that.

Brilliant episode. This will be in every fan's top 5. I just know it. Instant classic.
The flaws were so minor they aren't even worth reporting.
I'll just copy and paste my comments from the Rate the Episode thread. heh.

I would have been more pleased if I hadn't been spoiled on certain key elements, but I'm now spoiler-free so hopefully other episodes will be this good and will have huge surprises in store for me.
It was too bad that Locke's paralysis was exactly what many of us expected all along.
And part way through the episode and definitely by the end, I realized that Cooper was probably on the island, which some of us had theorized long ago anyway. But it was still an amazing cliffhanger.
The Jack and Kate stuff was really wonderful, and I'm a Skater. heh.
Jack and Juliet are great too.
Alex and Danielle was really great and sad.
Locke is an idiot and I hate him, but his story is good. There are so many questions.

Oh and Ben was the highlight. My goodness he is amazing and his lines were so great tonight.

I'm even more confused about what the Others are doing there, whether Ben has played every one of them, or if the unseen Jacob has been pulling the strings. But who the heck cares when you can get scenes like that between Emerson and O'Quinn with great Goddard/Pinkner dialog. I read the insiderscoop summary and even though spoiled still enjoyed every minute. I would have liked not to anticipate Locke going out the window; that was the only point at which I regretted being spoiled.

It was a masterpiece. I didn't think they had it in them, but clearly I was wrong. So very wrong. So very, very wrong. I am ... astonished. This episode was so very right on every level.

It doesn't get much better than this episode. The dialogue was superb, with special kudos to Terry O' Quinn and Micheal Emerson, whose performances were a home run. They both had some great stuff to work with--the taunting, the mind games--great writing. I also liked the Jack and Kate interaction, and I couldn't help but to think what a fine actress Evangeline Lilly has become (having little experience before Lost). She really can communicate a lot with her expressions.

So many questions were raised by tonight's episodes--questions that are about the core of the show--the island. I'll have to watch the episode again (and again) to ponder the multitude of questions. It'll be a busy week on the Lage as people discuss this episode.

Just when I was worried that the writers were running out of good material for flashbacks, "The Man From Tallahassee" comes along and eased my fears. The flashback portion started a little slow, but it finished with a bang. The window action was shocking even though I was spoiled for it, but it was the final scene, with Locke being placed in the wheelchair, that sent it over the top. Locke's expressions did more than any words could do to help the audience understand what meaning the wheelchair has for him. Well filmed, and well acted.

An initial review of this episode would not be complete without mentioning the short, but poignant, scene of Danielle viewing Alex through the brush. It was really a heart-warming moment.

It must be a challenge for the Lost staff to produce compelling episodes in what is probably the middle of the series. The first season, exploring unknown characters and a mysterious island, was probably (relatively) easy. But now, having fleshed out a lot of the characters in flashbacks but not yet able to reveal too much about the island, the episodes have to be particularly well written to work. And tonight's episode was particularly well written.

I agree, this episode knocked me on my rear end. Sooo much awesome writing, and I also totally loved the scenes with Michael Emerson and Terry O Quinn. Best episode of the season, hands down. I would write more, but I need to go to sleep. Curse ABC for having this on so late! Now I'm not going to get any work done tomorrow....

I loved this episode! It had so much going on... Locke's flashbacks were very interesting and added a lot to his character. I also really liked his scenes with Ben. I didn't realize how much I had missed that creepy guy! He's just so evil and twisted that it's great. It was awesome to see him back up to no good.

One of the highlights for me too was Alex and Danielle. I'm really glad Alex finally was clued in to the truth and Danielle seeing Alex was so touching. I can't wait to see what happens with them.

And I also loved Jack and Kate's interactions. They pack so much emotion into their scenes together. I can't wait to see them reunite (again)!

Yep, a fabulous episode. The ending didn't come as a surprise to me, and not cuz I was spoiled, but b/c everything pointed to it being Cooper. Loved seeing him all beat up--wonder who got the honors? LOL

Someone on this thread said there might be a fight over who gets to kill Cooper...too funny.

As always, the interplay between Ben and almost any other character is fascinating to watch. He is such a liar! It was fun, for a change, to actually get to watch him lying, when we knew it was going on. Having the inside track, so to speak.

Alex sure knows "her father" well, doesn't she? Well, she DID warn Locke, and other Lostaways, so I'm thinking that Alex may be the go-to gal when you want to know the truth.

All in all, I loved this episode...it was great!

Great episode. Can't wait for the next ones. Loved the scenes between Ben and Locke. Great scene at the end where Danielle sees Alex. Loved the hampster line. I laughed out loud and had to rewind. Loved Locke's FB. Great with his father throwing him out the window. I loved how interested Ben was in finding out about how Locke was able to walk. Oh, I also liked when Sayid told Alex she looks like her mother. That will give Alex more reason to hate her father, even though Ben will try to say otherwise. Not too sure how the Nikki Paulo epi will be, but excited to see kate's. Wow! i have to watch that again...soo much info to process

I love Ben. He was just awesome in this episode. I mean, I hate Ben… but I love him. All the while he was talking to Locke about the box I kept picturing him as Willy Wonka. “Make a wish… count to three… Come with meee, and you’ll beee, in a woooorld that’s pure imagination….” Awesome.

When we found out what really happened to Locke? My jaw dropped so hard I thought it was going to fracture. I find myself disliking Locke less after this episode. I wonder what he’ll do now that his father is on the island.

I really hope Sayid gets an episode soon where he’s not shot, beaten, tied up, or otherwise injured in any way. It makes me sad to see him hurt.

Loved Alex in this episode, and Danielle watching her through the bushes. It’ll be interesting when those two come face to face for the first time.

Gosh, I can’t think of anything else right now… great episode, though.

Instant classic. One of Lost's very best. Ever.

Definitely. When it was over, I said to my wife "That was the best show of Season Three so far." And I mean it. I gave it a 10 in the poll, the first time I've ever rated an episode that high.
100%

I really hope Sayid gets an episode soon where he’s not shot, beaten, tied up, or otherwise injured in any way. It makes me sad to see him hurt.

I have thought clear back from Season One that Sayid's experience (as perhaps is the case with some of the other survivors) on the island is atonement. He is atoning for the pain he caused others to suffer when he was a torturer. Now he is experiencing the karmic consequences of his acts, and when it is all over he will be clean: "Tabula Rasa"...

Ben was so good in this episode! Michael Emerson is a brilliant actor for sure.

This episode made me like Locke even more; that scene where he first saw his wheelchair broke my heart. I was also so shocked to see him get thrown out a window by his own father... I really hope Locke makes him pay for it.

I'm glad they let us see what was in the room, I thought for sure that they were gonna end the episode on Locke's head peering in the doorframe, but I'm so glad they let us see too!

Now if only we got to see Danielle and Alex interact...

I agree w/ what someone said earlier in the thread, it's clear that Ben really cares about Alex, and I love their interactions.

All in all, I love where Season 3 is going! :)

Terry was BRILLIANT in this episode. Wow did he make Locke alive or what. Locke has always been intense but he was off the hook tonight....he portrayed Locke as broken and beaten and strong and victorious...I believe he didn't blow up that sub..and has a plan...

Cooper, Danielle seeing Alex, the return of the hunter, Ben and Locke's interactions, Jack glaring at Locke on the dock...finding out what happened to Locke...

SOLID episode beginning to end tonight...this makes a really strong run of episodes that remind me a lot of Season One when you just couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next...

Finally the seed has been planted in Alex's mind that things aren't as they seem. I am so glad that Sayid made that comment to Alex about resembling her mother. I have had the feeling that she isn't as committed to the Others, this should definitely sway her greatly.

Great episode through and through.

I strongly liked this episode. Locke and Ben have this great rapport with each other and it was great to see it again this season. I also liked that the flashbacks didn't take the almost the entire episode to show, they were short and pretty much to the point, and they were broken up and paced well during the episode.

I've been waiting for this episode soooooo long as most of us have that really wanted to find out why Locke was in that bloody wheelchair!! We finally got our answer didn't we? Seeing Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson on my screen together is like poetry in motion. What a beautiful, beautiful thing to behold. When the writers give those two room to stretch out and move around...wow! :)

Locke is being used (surprise, surprise) but at least he's well aware of it, and is using that knowledge for further his own agenda. Best line of the night: "Because you're in a wheelchair, and I'm not." Go Locke! Terry simply floored me when the physical therapist put him in that wheel chair. So tragic. Give the man an Emmy already!

I have more to say, but it's early, and I haven't had any coffee. Great episode!

Probably my favourite episode ever, definitely favourite so far this season. I can't imagine how TPTB can top this, but I hope they can surprise me yet again.

Terry O'Quinn HAS to win an award for his performance in this ep, he was just superb. It was heartbreaking to see him in hospital when the nurse brought in the wheelchair. I think the reveal of how he ended up in the chair was a good one, and totally unexpected (by me anyway). I wonder if he's the guy Hurley saw hurtling past the window of his accountant's office? And OMG! Anthony Cooper aka Adam Seward (aka the 'real' Sawyer?) is on the island too.

Danielle seeing Alex for the first time brought a lump to my throat, and I can't wait to see what happens next for these two characters. The Jack and Kate scene was also really touching; you could tell she was concerned he knew about her and Sawyer's little liaison.

Anyway, I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

Even though I was spoiled (when am I not?) I enjoyed this episode immensely.

For those who want to know..the little hints I gave out was that some theorists got it right...that Anothony Cooper WAS on the island and the certain rumor was Locke falling out of a window.

"What do you suggest? We simply start start shooting people and hope for the best?"

"Unfortunately we don't have a code for there's a guy in the closet with a gun to my daughter's head although we obviously should!"

I am resigned to the fac that this will be the 'triangle' that never ends. We must endure to the bitter end.

I LIKED that Danielle saw Rosseau. I LIKED that we found out about the accident. I LIKED Jack and Juliette together. I liked Ben. I liked that Sayid made the comment to Alex about her mother.

I liked just about everything about this episode.

Well, I have to say...Lost is back. I've missed it for weeks and months now and last night, it felt like Season 1 again. Characters are acting like themselves again and are finally being showcased again. I loved Sayid's conversation with Alex. I loved all the scenes between John and Ben. And, yes, I loved the emotional reunion between Jack and Kate. It's been 10 long months for us Jaters since these two have been together without a piece of glass seperating them! It was emotional, romantic, angsty. Matt and Evi did a beautiful job. There is "magic" on Wednesday nights again and I for one am so glad.:)

There was a lot to like in this episode. Some moments we truly enjoyed were:
Ben's snide remark about Alex not being best pleased with him at the moment
Sayid's comment to Alex about the Others wanting them to believe her mother is dead
Locke's soaking wet walk up the dock and the great shot of the sub exploding behind him.

I also have to remark on the moving performance surrounding Locke getting placed in, and reacting to, his wheelchair. Both actors in the scene (I'm not including the detectives in this assessment, although that's not to dimish their performances.) did a fantastic job.

I find it ironic that "Lost" officially got its fourth season today, while so many "fans" and media reviewers seem to be claiming that the show is completely off the rails. Some have gone so far as to say that this episode "told us nothing new". Let me repeat that bit of nonsense: "told us nothing new". I challenge anyone to explain how this episode was simply a matter of spinning wheels. I think it's simply become the popular thing to complain about "Lost" and act like it's a failure, at least 30 episodes before it comes to a close. Why would so many in the media, previously more than happy to see "Lost" succeed, now work to have it canceled? And I'm still beside myself over the thought that much of the criticism is leveled against scheduling that was put into place to respond directly to fan frustrations!

Here's my review for Lost 3.13: "The Man From Tallahassee":

http://www.entil2001.com/series/lost/season3/lost3-13.html

Overall, this episode took the season arc into an interesting and unexpected direction, positioning two characters into a potential conflict that could have long-term ramifications. There’s also a revelation or two along the way, and more information about the Others. In other words, this was another solid episode, maintaining the standard of quality since the return from hiatus.

Loved it for it seems to have taken the story forward.

John Locke is a bad boy ;-)

Only this, its ok John doesnt wanna leave the island, but one of the reasons? He is afraid of his Dad? Come on that was lame. His Dad was never after him after he stole his kidney.

Brilliance. Sheer brilliance.

This is the one episode of LOST that basically had it all: action, shock, sadness, catharsis. Terry O'Quinn is one truly phenomenal actor. Of course, anyone who saw him in THE STEPFATHER knows that, but I digress. I do enjoy seeing someone as talented as him finally getting some widespread recognition.

WONDERFUL episode. Even in season one, it'd have ranked among the best!

A small nit-pick: Any human who fell eight stories would be dead... But this is Lost and we have to think pseudo-scientifically.

Here's my question: the last three episodes have been BRILLIANT. So what happened with the mini-series and the episodes before this? (like Jack in Thailand, the worst episode in Lost's history.)

It's like during season 3, the show has undergone a metamorphasis from ugly caterpillar to beautiful butterfly. The first part of season 3 was horrible. But the last three episodes have been among the BEST!!!

Edit: I pray there's not a Nikki/Paolo episode coming up... That would derail all the momentum.

WOW!I'm still in shock!Best episode of the whole season!
Such great performances from Ben,Locke all of them.
So many reveals BRILLIANT.
I wonder what happens when Sawyer finds out Coops on the island?
I dont think after all he's been through ,that he'd go through with killing him.
Sawyer's come a long way really.That's if John doesn't kill him first!Perhaps
not...you'd think he would have done it by now.
Maybe Locke will finally snap and turn bad and Sawyer goes the other way.
They're trying to show us we are ALL capable of good and bad and how situations can turn people from good to bad and vice versa!
They are BRILLIANT!Loooved it!

Locke + Ben = brilliant!

Cracking couple of actors and this episode had the best acting I've seen this season. The wheelchair scene really left tears in my eyes for the first time on Lost it was so very moving. And the shock of watching Locke thrown out of a window equalled the sonic fence scene.

I am just so very glad Locke is finally back running on four cylinders!. What a character!

This may be my favorite episode ever. Locke and Ben together are captivating, so real and convincing. Great performances, leaves me wanting more and more of those two. Plus, there wasn't alot of fluff, romance or comedy. I want darkness, mystery and deep characters. Bravo!

When watching the episode I had a strong feeling that Cooper was on the island, so to me it was a bit predictable, but I still LOVED the episode. To all those who say that season 3 is slowing down, I beg to differ! It was awesome.

LOVED IT!

This episode contained everything I love in lost; Locke, Ben, action, intrigue, questions and answers. I, like many, have been long awaiting an answer to Locke's biggest backstory question, and I felt like it was fully worth the wait. It just seemed to come out of no where! One minute he was picking up the phone and the next he was being smashed through a window and falling eight stories. Completely unexpected. Magnificent.

I also believe that every episode of LOST should be at least 2 parts conversation between Ben and Locke, 1 part everything else. That was certainly some of LOST's best dialogue in the history of the show, leftover chicken, magic boxes: I loved every minute.

The Others are interesting again! I felt like for the first six episodes of this season all the mystery and menace of the Others had been removed. "The Man From Tallahassee" proved that there really is a LOT we still don't know about them. And the final scene. It genuinely had me giddy with joy. Reminiscent of the first season with Locke in the wheelchair, or the raft being hijacked or with the first ventures into the hatch at the start of season 2. A sublime episode, can't wait for next weeks.

10/10

I really loved the episode, as stated previously. However, certain things are becoming redundant: Kate being a prisoner (this is the third time the Others have captured her), and Sayid being beaten up.

Also, Sawyer being beaten had become redundant, but that hasn't happened in several episodes.

GREAT EP! I cannot say how much I loved watching Ben and Locke dealing with each other. Both such beautiful, subtle actors! And playing complicated and murky characters. It's hard to get so many levels into a performance and yet still play it so quietly. These guys just plain . . . they just . . . they rock! Truly.

The only downside was that, while I didn't mind the jack/kate scene in and of itself, it was a nice moment for those characters--I am getting this baaaad feeeeling in my gut that we might be forced to watch the triangle/square thingie go on. And on. And on. Until the show ends. I deeply hope I'm wrong.

Other than that: Aces. No complaints. Plus now I'm DYING to know what Locke does next. Ungag his dad and talk to him? Beat him senseless? Interrogate him? Gaaaaah, I wanna know NOW!

Loved watching Ben and Locke--two superb actors who make their craft look effortless. Melted when Danielle saw Alex. Thought it was a great episode. I enjoyed watching Matt Fox and Evie work their scene, too, although I was uncomfortable with some of the power dynamics that were conveyed. It wasn't my cup of tea to have her handcuffed and kneeling at his feet as he told her she was responsible for his having made a deal with the Others because she hurt him so much. It may just be me, but that sort of gave me an uncomfortable feeling. Perhaps it was intentional. I don't know. But overall the episode was gripping and definitely old school LOST with fissions of mixed excitment/fear/and OMG!! mixed in.

The high points for me were the interaction between John and Ben, the moment
that Danielle saw her baby Alex, and most especially the moment that John and
we saw that Daddy Dearest is on the island!

wow. I fell to my knees and kissed the ground--thankful to be spoiler free.

This epi definitely made the wait for new epi's worth it! I'm so looking forward to Wednesdays even worse than I have before. That's sad:rolleyes: , nah!

Anyway, Ben...so...he's been there all his life and recruited all these "Others".... who helped Ben, Adam and Eve? Again, glad to be getting answers, but so many questions???

It just had everything I wanted:
*Danielle seeing her daughter
*Alex finding out about Danielle form Sayid.
*An understanding of how Ben is connected to the sentient spirit of the Island (Apparently not all like Locke's "Communion" with it. I loved all that. Is Jacob/"Him" connected or are all of the Others distatched from it, i.e. no Hallucinations/healings etc.?)
*Finding out how Locke got in the wheelchair.
*A great cliffhanger.

I LOVED it!

Good writing, good acting, good dialogue, good story telling, good revelations, and good questions. All around good. Still only gave it an 8, but I can definately see why someone would give it a 9 or 10. Good stuff. See good things can happen outside of the "beach." :)

I'm posting to applaud this episode now as one of the best of the season in protest of the piece of garbage that followed it. "The Man From Tallahassee," was fantastic. The writing, directing and acting were top notch. Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson's "back and forth" was mesmerizing. Great pacing to the island and flashback stories and we actually learned things on both fronts. And I'm not a big "shipper," but I have to say those were some pretty intense Jate scenes. I was borderline verklempt.

Basically, TMFT, has become even better now that "Expose" has aired.

Terry O'Quinn has got to get an Emmy for this episode. Anyone else notice the incredible catalog of facial tics he's developed? "Island" Locke has a forward-trust jaw and a sparkle in the eye; the depressed Locke of the past has dead eyes and a slack jaw; in "Enter 77" when he struggled to keep himself away from the computer chess game, his mouth screwed up like Popeye's... His whole physical bearing deflates in those flashbacks. Just amazing work.

Also, who ever came up with Locke's apartment set in this episode, major kudos: the tv table, the ketchup bottle, the pictures on the walls, the "No Solicitors" sign...not to mention those f**king jogging pants: classic lonely guy pathos, and told me more about Locke than most of his big dramatic reveals.

My favorite line, besides Locke's "ha ha, very funny" reaction to the hamster ball, was Michael Emerson's telling Locke "Of course, you have no idea what you're talking about" in relation to his "very important" connection to the island. Pretty much sums it all up.

Great job, all around. I'll be watching this one over and over...
