LOVED this episode, in so many ways.

Maybe Charlie isn't really going to die, but maybe God sent Desmond flashes of Charlie's death so that Desmond would keep "saving" him. Eventually, when Charlie continues to survive, Desmond would eventually regain his faith that things would turn out ok and he would reunite with Penny. Wow, very thought provoking.

Loved how Sawyer knows why Kate wanted to be with him that night - he's no fool, but I think it really hurt him, and I think Kate realizes that she hurt him. The look on her face......on his too, though Sawyer would never let Kate see that.

LOL at the campfire scene.........and Hurley's right. Who doesn't love marshmallows toasted over an open fire?

Penny and Des.........aww, I just love them.

The flashes were very cool.......just a fabulous eppy

I loved this episode...I loved his chemistry with that Ruth girl...maybe she'll come searching for him too. I loved Sawyer and Jack's scenes tonite. And I really thought that Charlie was goign to bite it since they showed him penning a song, and I have been saying for a long time that he can't die before he writes his comeback song. The writers had me believing he was a goner too.

I liked it, but not as crazy over it as some of the rest of you. I'd always rather watch LOST than almost anything else on TV.
I, too, liked it when Sawyer called Kate on what she'd done. She's no good, Sawyer, forget her!
(I know, I know--the pickings are pretty slim on that Island, so what's a guy to do?)

Yeah, I loved it, but somebody's going to have to get over here and give me some oxygen. Scared the crap out of me. I feel like I just rode the Tower of Terror.

That had me confused as well. :undecide: . They are supposed to be in Scotland , but that mess was .. well . Especially Ruth. Or maybe she was supposed to be Irish and that was part of it. Otherwise a great episode. I think a new top favorite.

I loved it but was confused there for a while. I know Lost well enough though to know that, if I just hang in there, all becomes fairly clear. :)

Yeah, I loved it, but somebody's going to have to get over here and give me some oxygen. Scared the crap out of me. I feel like I just rode the Tower of Terror.
Pace, I immediately thought of you during that opening sequence.

Loved the Des/Charlie and the Hurley/Charlie interactions, Jin's ghost story, Sawyer wooing Kate and her confusion not only about that but about Jack as well. Glad Sawyer firgured out what she was doing too. I didn't want him to be a sap. Am loving Sawyer learning how to fit somwhat into the group.

I thought Des' backstory was interesting in that it showed that Des' life has been a quest long before he entered the race - a quest to find where he should be and how to make his life have meaning.

I found myself smiling watching the Des/Penny conversation at the monastery. There was a sweetness to it that just permeated the scene but it wasn't sickly sweet.
Once again, a fabulous episode!

I loved it too. I definitely need to rewatch it because there was so much going on that I know I didn't absorb a lot of it. The helicopter stuff made my heart pound, I was on the edge of my seat. The Charlie death flash was scary and freaky. I even liked the Sawyer/Kate/Jack stuff. As much as it makes some people cringe, it's still one of the most popular discussions around here. I love Jin. I'm so happy he's getting some good screentime. His ghost story scene was hilarious. The whole Desmond the Monk thing really surprised me... didn't see that one coming at all. Hurley, Charlie, and Jin are great together.
I don't see how Desmond will be able to keep his sanity much longer.

Great episode, utilizing most of the characters. I really like the Charlie/Desmond interactions, and I've always enjoyed the Hurley/Charlie relationship. Granted, the Charlie"death" scene was freaking me out. They just had to keep showing it again didn't they.

I enjoyed this episode... I was SO HAPPY that they brought Penny back into the story line. I've been so anxious to learn more about Penny since last season's finale and the mysterious listening station. I can't wait to find more about Penny's role in her search for Desmond.

Jin's ghost story I think made everyone laugh out loud. I am glad that Jin is becoming a more active member in the Lostie community. He is (finally) picking up on more and more english!

The helicoptor scene I think was one of the most shocking scenes in a while! HOW did Penny find the island? HOW did she know how to find the island-- what exactly was she measuring in the outpost during last season's finale? I think the inclusion of the outside world and the brief cell phone view was very relieving.

So now three episodes left until next season... The major questions right now for me are: the box and Locke's father- what the heck is going on there? Locke has always been my favorite character but his behavior is a little eccentric now, even for me. AND what is Juliet's plan. I can not stand her. I think she has more up her sleeve though. I think she is playing both Ben and the Losties. I don't think she is as heartless as the show made her seem at the end of last episode. THREE episodes left and i can't wait!

I was kind of disappointed in the scenes for next episode. I hope next episode pleasantly surprises me! Is it next Wednesday yet?!

I liked this one. I love anything Desmundo-related, so I liked it. I really like the chemistry he's developed with Hurley and Charlie, although I wish he had been more central to the overall storyline this season. It looks like he may play a bigger role in the last few eps, what with Penny and her parachutist.

Overall, a solid episode. :)

I thought the writing of the dialogue in the ep was great, the best that's ever been on the show. I enjoyed that so much more than Desmond's vision quest and the love triangles.

I liked the fact that the opening scene, which we find out is a flashback, is just long enough to make me start thinking that Charlie really is dead. This was me seconds after the arrow punches through Charlie's neck: "Please be a flashback, please be a flashback, please be a flashback." Now granted, Charlie eventually needs to die for adequate closure on this matter, but for now I'm thinking how much fun it is watching him come *this close* to dieing every episode.

I was kind of dissapointed that Juliette wasn't brooding around doing weird stuff.

I liked how Sawyer and Jack were kind of talking stuff out, its a nice change from Jack yelling at Sawyer and Sawyer just lying down with a book in his hand dismissing Jack with little quips. Kudos writers.

I knew this one was coming: the pilot wasn't Penny. The writers made it too obvious that it wasn't gonna be her. Still, wow, she knew his name, pretty cool.

I give it a solid B.

I loved this episode, mostly because it was a Desmond flashback!! I can't get enough of them. I was so delighted to find that it was his. I really liked the storyline but was getting kind of nervous as Charlie neared that wire. I knew deep down that Des could never let Charlie just die, but in the back of my head I was thinking how people do crazy things for love!
Getting to the first scene in the show, I knew right away as soon as Charlie got that arrow through the throat that it was one of Desmond's flashes. I even said so to my sister. It was a great start to the show though and I'm glad it didn't actually happen!
The girl that is now on the island, I'm betting it's a sister of desmond's. It's just my guess. We haven't learned anything really about his family, so he could have a sister. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I LOVE the Tower of Terror ride--one of my favorites!

I have always been a supporter of Sawyer/Kate, but after the way she has treated him lately, I have to say Sawyer is too good for her. As soon as Jack mentioned seeing Kate the night before in the kitchen..I KNEW Sawyer was going to know why she came to him in his tent. Overall though I loved the episode. Those first couple of minutes though, even though I knew it wasn't really happening but part of Desmond's vision, had me on the edge of my seat in horror seeing that arrow go straight into Charlie's throat.

I loved this episode. Desmond has become one of the most interesting characters to me, and I've especially liked the Desmond-centric episodes this season. They're all the more interesting since we still don't know a huge amount of info about his character, compared to some of the others.

Desmond seems a bit like Locke as a "man of faith". I wonder how he will continue to interact with Charlie, if he thinks this situation is a test.

I loved the Jin campfire scene- hilarious.

I liked Kate and Sawyer's scenes together, although the only thing that really bugged me was Kate's completely rash and impulsive using of Sawyer. I just find it hard to believe that she'd react that way.

Loved it! The character interactions were great. Hurley and Charlie are always interesting together, but the interactions in this episode with Desmond and Charlie were very good too. And I loved the ghost story with Jin.
On a personal note-this is the 1st episode of Lost I haven't had to watch alone since "Not in Portland". My teenage son stopped watching after that episode, but he came into the TV room for something near the beginning of the episode, and it caught his interest and he stayed to watch the whole thing! (I have no hope at this time that my husband will return to being a Lost fan unfortunately.) This episode is another step in the right direction.
Can't wait for next Wed.

Magnificent acting this episode...

Desmond and Charlie alaways deliver in the acting category. They were fascinating together.

My favorite bit of acting, however, came when Kate came on to Jack and then spotted him with Juliet. The facial expressions were art.

When this cast has good material they soar!

I liked this a lot and even though I knew Charlie wasn't going to die it was still gripping. It reminded me so much of the hanging during ATBCHDI when I was literally screaming at the tv. Good times. :D

I like the dyfunctional crazy relationship between Desmond and Charlie....these two guys are bonding without really bonding and are always eyeing each other with suspicion but neither one can just walk away. I don't know if I've ever seen a TV relationship like this one before and I like it. Keep your love triangles and daddy issues. I'll go with this non-slashy not really friends but they still have benefits pairing! :D

Imagine how Demsond would have felt had he let Charlie die only to find out it wasn't Penny! Oh my.

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Aside from the love triangle (or is it square now? :)) buisness, I don't think there's anything to really complain about.

It was interesting to see Desmond's days as a monk, but nothing remarkable. The flashbacks recently have become a little stale for me. They're not neccesarily bad (Juliet's was one I quite enjoyed), but aside from Locke's great one a few weeks ago, they're becoming more and more there for the sake of it. Of course that brief shot of the old lady (minds drawing a blank on any name) in the photo was veeery interesting. Does this mean she's a real person? Or does this mean she's working alongside the monk in some way? Perhaps she is living a similar life to Desmond and has to force certain events to happen to achieve whatever goals. Whatever it is, that one shot really got me thinking. I did however like seeing Desmond with his ex, establishing that he has run away before.

The whole Jack, Kate, Sawyer stuff really bothered me this episode. I've never been a huge fan of it, but this is the first time it actually frustrated me. As much as I enjoyed the obvious chemistry between Jack and Sawyer, I seriously wish they'd drop this storyline because it makes me want to skip forward to the next scene.

The main story was very enjoyable. Always good to see Jin joining in with the gang and the only one missing was Sawyer (sadly otherwise engaged). The opening scene was superb. It's very rare you see a show do one of those "and it was all a dream" kinda moments and pull it off, but Lost defiantly did here. As much as I don't want Charlie to die, I was excited by the prospect of him dying then. That's how well made it was. However, I think most people would have guessed after the reveal that Charlie was never gonna die this episode, so it took away from the tension slightly. And by the end, I was willing for the parachutist (?) to be Penny, and was very dissapointed when it wasn't her (not in the sense I think it detracted from the story, but in the sense I really wanted the reuinion moment there). But this really opens thigns up with Desmonds story, fantastic.

Overall an 8/10. If it wasn't for the love triangle, I would've said a 9, but it really distracted from an otherwise great episode for me. I'm really looking forward to the run-in now. Although next week's episode is (as far as I'm aware) a

Jin/Sun episode. And as I've never really been a fan of their backstory, I'm not overly excited about it.

A VERY solid episode indeed. IMO not as good as last week, but good nonetheless.
Desmond's flashbacks are captivating. A useful Hurley? Whowouldthunk? I like Juliet NOT brooding, conspiring, sneaking. Part of the plan? Kate seems to have serious daddy issues (ie rejection=attachment issues) hence the crying. But Sawyer "too good" for Kate? Now that is saying ALOT! Civil conversation between Jack and Sawyer. I am glad that the parachutist/pilot was NOT penny. That would have been too easy, too contrived. Don't pander to me please.

When Desmond pushed Charle to the ground (missing the arrow) I thought that maybe the arrow had struck Jin instead! but I was wrong!:drowsy:

How much fun would that have been! That would have been a twist of twists for sure! I say, let Charlie die already. Or better yet, Take Hurley instead!

All in all a very good episode.

I really enjoyed this episode. It kept me on the edge the entire hour. The suspense reminded me of old Lost and any time our boys go on a trek together, real entertainment will happen. Jin's Korean ghost story was one of the funnier moments in Lost (all of Lost). Great epi.

I knew they wouldn't kill Charlie like that but I was still on the edge of my seat. Showing his arrow death was great. :)

And it so surreal to hear a Lost character singing drunken Celtic songs like the ones I hear regularly at the weekend. Brilliant. :D
Jin's ghost story was hysterical too. In fact, the only thing I didn't like was the Kate tired love triangle crap

I didn't mention two things in the review that I might as well mention now. First, I'm impressed by the subtle nuances added to the script by co-writer Brian K. Vaughn. Those of us who know his other work probably recognized his sense of humor. Secondly, I loved the Biblical allusions throughout the episode. Gotta love a good Biblical allusion! The audience dipped a bit this week, but take into account the power situations in the Northeast, the expanded news coverage on the VT situation, and so forth, and a few hundred thousand less viewers is hardly a cause for concern.

Here's my review for Lost 3.17: "Catch-22":

http://www.entil2001.com/series/lost/season3/lost3-17.html

Overall, this episode is another success for the third season, continuing the recent trend of strong material coming into the final stretch. The character at the center of the episode drives a compelling storyline that looks to factor heavily into the end of the season and beyond. “Lost” is definitely experiencing a resurgence, and the timing couldn’t be better.

Come on, nobody can be a hard *** 24/7!! Even Sawyer deserves to relax among friends and be "affable" from time to time, no?

Other than the dire triangle subplot, I really enjoyed this episode.

The best element for me was the Desmond, Hurley, Jin and Charlie trek team. Great to see the beach bums finally getting off the beach having themselves an adventure while the A-Team take a backseat for once. Very refreshing. The trek had a great 'Stand by Me' vibe with the whistling, the ghost stories and the debates about superheroes. All that stuff was delighful. Hurley, Charlie and Jin really shine in the quirky comedy moments.

I also loved all the religious symbolism with the Abraham/Isaac story. It adds real pathos to the Desmond/Charlie story. Ian and Dom are brilliant in their scenes together. They have really made this relationship unique and fascinating. It took a much darker turn in this episode, but that just added more complexity to it. Desmond and Charlie are trapped in an endless cycle and the only way they can break out of it would seem to be a willing sacrifice...this is intense stuff. I know that some people complained that it was sooo obvious that Desmond would save Charlie, but I think the big revelation was Charlie realising that his "guardian angel" had almost led him to his death. That is really going to shake things up between Desmond and Charlie.

I loved this episode. I cringed every time we had to see Charlie getting shot in the neck with an arrow; it looked horrible and we had to see it a zillion times. :P I really did think Desmond was going to let it happen (but I hoped he wouldn't). Also, I love the new questions that are brought up, such as the obviously photoshopped framed picture.

well I may be biased ( due to the fact that I think Desmond is awesome) but I loved the episode as well.... I didnt get to watch it till lastnight.. but yeah I liked the idea the Desmond was a monk, and the whole sacrifice of Issac linked with Charlie was deep ( I read fear and trembling by Kierkegarrd and was blown away). In my eyes Lost is very philosophical at times which is what I love about it!

Lost continuously outdoes itself. This episode was awesome. I love the edge of the seat feel we got when the time approached for Charlie to get the arrow in his neck and then it ended up in the neck of his guitar. Brings new meaning to Desmond's amusement (and mine) when Charlie asked if he could bring the guitar.

Sawyer had a lot of good lines, too. My favorite was when he said to Jack if they don't play table tennis every 108 minutes, the island's gonna explode.

They camp on the beach every night and yet they hike off to go camping! Great stuff. Jinn is such a great story teller that Hurley was surprised by the ending.

Can't say enough about it. :)

That's right, jheri, everything with Desmond is priceless - just like him.
Well, it was my first episode with a huge doze of Des since I saw... Live together, die alone... Yeah I know, it sounds horrible - I missed one of his most important flashbacks (03x08).
I started to watch Lost again somewhere about episode 15-16 and a week later I couldn't wait for Catch-22.
And... I flew away when I saw Des. Felt in love again.

For it's a grand old team to play for,
