View Full Version : What does par avion mean? castdownpbj 03-15-2007, 12:03 AM Anyone? I didn't hear it in the episode. Claudia815 03-15-2007, 12:03 AM By plane. DharmaChick 03-15-2007, 12:05 AM Yep. It is French for "By airplane." Cardielost 03-15-2007, 12:05 AM More precisely, it is the French version of "Airmail," which is how they are sending out the cry for help. Cardie imaaronsmom 03-15-2007, 12:10 AM More precisely, it is the French version of "Airmail," which is how they are sending out the cry for help. Cardie This is why I love it here. There's always someone who knows the answers. Islandprincess 03-15-2007, 12:12 AM Ditto...I'm cosigning for "by plane" if my high school and college french lessons were accurate. I thought the title was a reference to how the losties arrived on the island...I forgot about how Claire was attempting to send a message by carrier pigeon or whatever that bird was... Saukkomies 03-15-2007, 12:17 AM It could also be a tongue-in-cheek reference to sending Claire's message by bird. The Spanish word for bird is Ave. The phrase "by bird" would be Por Ave. Similar, but not really too meaningful in itself. It's the idea behind it though... Islandprincess 03-15-2007, 12:31 AM That's the great thing about lostie fans on thefuselage...they like entertainment and they've got brains! ^5 Andruin 03-15-2007, 02:13 PM What does Par Avion mean anyway? PurpleSky 03-15-2007, 02:17 PM "by plane" But I really don't see the significance like previous episode titles. I think I'm missing the interpretation. KyleSBeaver 03-15-2007, 02:18 PM It's french for "Airmail." Thus, they tried to put a message on the bird. ElginMiller 03-15-2007, 02:18 PM It means "by air" which I imagine refers to rescue by air, via the message attached to the bird. Shes_Just_Lost 03-15-2007, 02:18 PM Par Avion: A French phrase meaning "By Air,'' it appears on airmail etiquettes of most countries, along with a similar phrase in the predominant language of the country of origin. caforrest2047 03-15-2007, 02:18 PM by plane, it's french Lost_In_Louisiana 03-15-2007, 03:04 PM More precisely, it is the French version of "Airmail," which is how they are sending out the cry for help. Par Avion: A French phrase meaning "By Air,'' it appears on airmail etiquettes of most countries, along with a similar phrase in the predominant language of the country of origin. Yes, please forget all the "by plane" translation - that is too literal. It's just like Americans saying "That is so cool." That can be directly translated as something that is cold to the touch but that's not what it MEANS. Par Avion does not refer to the Losties themselves arriving by plane. Par Avion denotes messages sent by airmail and appears on letters & packages sent overseas from Europe. It doesn't necessarily refer just to the French either, because I have received over 100 letters from a friend in Scotland and Par Avion was stamped on every single letter, right next to the postage. Unless we find out something extraordinarily cryptic, it would be safe to assume that the title referred to Claire sending her message by bird, i.e. AIRMAIL. ;) redmaria 03-15-2007, 03:42 PM Right on!if ebay was in French and paypal too,wed be asked anytime we made a purchase ''will you pay more and get your package PAR AVION in 7-10 business days ,or spare a couple of bucks and get it in 20 to 40 days?''then we d all shout in one voice and in french ''par avion ,SIS VOUS PLAIT!!@!'' |
