Just need clarification here. Are the "barracks" the same as what's been called "Otherville". I think so. Sure doesn't look like barracks that I've seen.

Thought this at first, but decided that nobody would refer to "Otherville" as barracks.

Seems like it was originally built as barracks for DHARMA (referenced on the Pearl video) and at some point, the Others took it over and it became Otherville.

Yes. Same place.

In real life, it's a YMCA camp/conference center.

This place looked different that the "housing community"/Otherville we saw earlier IMHO.

Of course, per the map, there were quite a few buildings in the community.

Seems I recall some sort of aerial picture of Otherville that had a different configuration.

It's Otherville alright.... what do you expect the map to say, "Home Sweet Home"?

I agree with the theory that "barracks" might be a term that pre-dates the current occupents fancying up the place into something a little less military.

I thought it looked a lot like the pictures they showed to Juliette when they were trying to recruit her. But it was the right place because Jack was there and Tom too.

Yep, I'm pretty sure it was Otherville.
Jack and his posse were just playing football on the outskirts of the barracks.

Why would Dharma have a barracks that the others would then "decide" to nestle into and make a 21st century housing community?

that all depends on how/why the Others are on the island in the first place.

What I don't understand is why Kate isn't trying to get back to the smaller island. She didn't know that Ben brought everyone back to the main Island, did she? I mean, didn't they all start talking about 'going home' after Kate and Sawyer escaped?

HOW do they know to stay on their own Island instead of going back to where Kate last saw Jack?

Dictionary.com:

barrack -noun, usually barracks
1. a building or group of buildings for lodging soldiers, esp. in garrison
2. any large, plain building in which many people are lodged

It could just be a liberal usage of the term, it could be that whoever came up with the term "barracks" for where they live thinks of its inhabitants as soldiers or troops.

Yeah, I'd like to know this too. Doesn't make sense to me why they didn't go to the smaller island to try to rescue Jack.

i thought they were just playing it by ear. like, the original plan was to go to where she last saw jack, then they found the Flame and mikhail and a map, which led them to Otherville, and then to jack.

IMO, they had no exact direction in getting back to the small island, so they just went.

but i guess they could of at least got in the raft kate and sawyer used. but i thought they docked far from the Losties beach anyway, so maybe they were headed to where kate thought the boat was, then rolled up on the Flame, etc....

Because of what Karl said to her and Sawyer

I asked this question (are Othersville and the barracks the same place?) in another thread and was ignored so it is comforting to see that I am not in fact alone in wondering. I don't see any mention of the thing that made me wonder, however. Didn't the Pearl video mention something about taking the Pala Ferry to the barracks? How does that work with what we know, to the extent thet we know anything, about the geography of the island? Does it make sense to go from the Pearl to Othersville by water? Can anyone direct me to the most current viewer created maps of the island?

**MOD edited**

Kate knew from Karl that the Others LIVED on the main Island. Thus, they needed to find where they lived, acquire hostages, and do a prisoner exchange.

Thanks, glad I wasn't the only one who wondered about this.

3. Can anyone direct me to the most current viewer created maps of the island?

1. Yes, I'm pretty sure it did.
2. No, not from what we know now.
3. Sorry, not I. I don't keep up w/ the maps...that would be too much for me.
