I´m sure that Jack was... well, with some kind of secret agenda all the time. He knew that the others were watching him with Kate in that room... I dont know...
And I think now Kate thinks that he may knows about the skex thing... :rolleyes:

For now I think that Cooper = Smokey, but it is becoming something of a tired explanation for things like Christian, the black horse (and the cheery tree, woohoo!) and possibly even Sawyer's boar and Walt.

Jack actually believed he was being allowed to go home. No, he didn't trust Ben. Not really. But there was the sub. Of course, he--and rescue--would never find the Island again. But he didn't know that part!

Why he asked Ben for his word to let his friends go--I don't know. It was clear, in those last glances he gave Ben, that he really didn't believe Ben's promise. Still, I guess it was all Jack had. He started out by saying he knew Ben owed him nothing, after all.

What I DON'T get is Ben. Jack point-blank TOLD him that he wouldn't leave if Ben kept his friends captive. So why didn't Ben take the "out" Jack gave him? Not enough of a face-saver with his people? Or maybe he felt the people would believe he was just using this as an excuse to break his promise to Jack? Still, an awfully awkward moment. I guess he just weighed the idea and thought it was too risky.

Anyway, I guess there wasn't much choice for anyone BUT to make deals with devils. Not sure I could do it, though.
