View Full Version : Tom's signal to Jack
LostGrrrl 03-22-2007, 01:16 AM this is my first topic ever on this board, i hope no one has already mentioned this....
when Tom brings Jack in to talk to Kate, he signaled to him as if to say "be careful, they are listening"... it caught my attention
abbybaby 03-22-2007, 01:20 AM ya, I caught that too:confused: . I was like "is Tom with Jack now". But now that I"ve had time to think about it, I wonder if it wasn't a HURRY UP signal. Jack didn't have long before he was suppose to leave. I don't know, I'm gonna have to watch it again.
BTW: Great first topic post. I see you only have 13 posts, hope to hear more from you on this board:biggrin:
CrimsonRabbit 03-22-2007, 01:21 AM Oh yeah! Tom's turned to the Light Side.
Michelle Friday 03-22-2007, 01:22 AM Yeah, I noticed that too. But like Ben said, he has been keeping people on the
Island with the promise of going home so even though at first they all seemed
evil maybe they really aren't. Maybe they are all trapped and doing things
just for the promise of home and Tom realizes Jack is just another one who
is doing things to go home, too.
LostLaura 03-22-2007, 01:23 AM Tom is Friendly. lol.
I mean, it's weird. I was surprised by it too. I thought the football playing and Tom being nice to Jack and Kate in the miniseason was all kind of fake. But, no, he really is a nice guy. Still works for Ben, but..... doesn't mind helping out Jack and Juliet. I like him a lot. He has to be careful. If he gets on Ben's bad side, he might meet a quick demise...
Gobi-1 03-22-2007, 01:24 AM Well Tom is "Mr. Friendly."
*Dang it you beat me to it. lol
Saukkomies 03-22-2007, 01:26 AM Absolutely! I think that Jack has really been able to integrate himself into the Others community. How weird it is that if Sayid, Kate and Locke had shown up just a few hours later, Jack would have (speculatively) already been gone... But now that he is (theoretically) on the Island to stay, then I think we're going to really see some amazing social dynamics happen between him and the Others. I think the Others are about ready to fly apart and go at each other... Ben's leadership has gotten *how many* of them killed in the last couple of months? I don't think he can control ALL OF THEM for much longer... And now with Jack there, well, perhaps he offers them an alternative leader...

Funny that Jack has spelled it out for them in SIASL (oh, that episode set up a lot of good stuff, didn't it? I hope it will be reevaluated in the future) that he did his best to take advantage of the "chaos" their power struggle will cause. I think him and Juliet and Tom (possibly others on the sub crew as well) have become aligned to get rid of him. I don't think that sub was just going to get them to LA and drop them off and come back.
That WAS their best chance... both for the Losties and for the faction of the Others who aren't happy with Ben.

agreed. tom wants to get the heck out of dodge, too.
John Burger 03-22-2007, 02:52 AM Tom really likes Jack. thats so obvious. But he is also pretty loyal as he ratted on juliet
loving_lost_always 03-22-2007, 03:08 AM Is it possible he was warning Jack that the others (including Tom) know what is being said so not to tell Kate to much about anything, like in a threatening way?..... I dont know just an idea,

Are we forgetting that he stole Walt from Michael?! He can smile and play catch all he wants but I'm not forgiving him for that. :furious:
junior94 03-22-2007, 03:12 AM I'm so glad this was brought up, because it caught my attention IMMEDIATELY. Tom seemed to be saying it very much in a protective sort of tone, obviously looking out for Jack. I mean, he'd suddenly WANT Jack to actually have some privacy to be able to talk to Kate?? I do hope very much this gets explored some more later.
BrandonHasTheKeys 03-22-2007, 04:05 AM The first thing that came to my mind on seeing Tom's gesture was, "Is he warning Jack that Kate is crazy?"
But I don't think that was what was meant.

I thought that he was warning Jack that the Others are always watching and listening. To make sure that Jack didn't say too much or maybe give too much information to Kate. To be careful how he worded things. I didn't think it was threatening, though.

Naaaah. Then the gesture would have been horizontal to his head, lol. Tom's gesture was vertical. Like "they're (the Others) are all around...don't forget that."
gtaz21 03-22-2007, 04:32 AM It seemed obvious to me that Tom was warning Jack to not let Kate get into his head. He knew that Jack had a thing for Kate from before. So, it was a guy, being somewhat friendly, of course, letting another guy know not to let the girl get in his head, especially when he's so close to going home. Basically, don't blow it by letting her convince you to do something stupid.
RodimusBen 03-22-2007, 08:48 AM Are we forgetting that he stole Walt from Michael?! He can smile and play catch all he wants but I'm not forgiving him for that. :furious:Awww, he was just following orders. And remember, Sawyer shot first.
Yeah it totally seemed to me that Tom was warning Jack to watch his behavior since he was being observed. The two of them are clearly buddies now.
rtteachr 03-22-2007, 08:59 AM I took it as Tom being one of the Others on Juliet's side.

Yeah, I think Tom was just letting him know that this game room was bugged too, and not to say something self-incriminating while being monitored. Or not to say something embarrassing while he's with his "girl". Maybe he felt bad about taunting Jack earlier when Jack was in the cage about him having seen Kate & Sawyer, after Jack taught him to throw a good pass.
piscescat 03-22-2007, 09:05 AM I still don't trust the friendship of Tom and Jack, but then we haven't seen enough of Tom's true feelings about Otherland and Ben, etc. It's possible he wants off too but I have a feeling Tom is another rare one born on the island. Anyway, it looked like he was reminding Jack that this room's bugged too so be careful. And it looked like he knew Jack only had a few minutes to talk.
lost12 03-22-2007, 09:07 AM Tom pointed to his ear, then straight up. They were being watched/ recorded.
Caffreys 03-22-2007, 02:36 PM I kinda took it more as a warning too. I don't think he was being threatening, but not helpful either. Just a simple warning, "we're listing Jack, don't do anything stupid."
Guinevere 03-22-2007, 02:42 PM I'm glad to see this discused because I thought, at first, that he was signalling tha Kate was nuts! I have an excuse for this idiocy. There was a glitch in the cable signal about that time and so all I saw was Tom pointing to his head and then Jack's half smile.
OhNoTheOthers 03-23-2007, 06:30 PM Tom and Jack are buddies now. Jack proved himself to be a decent guy when he saved Ben, then he also stepped in to save Juliet's life. I think Tom really respects him for that.
There is this odd vibe I get about Tom though--he is ultra interested in what is going on with the 815 survivors. The others know all this information about the people on the plane. This is a crazy analogy, but it is kind of like reading a tabloid and learning all kinds of info about celebrities. Tom feels like he knows Jack, Kate, and the rest because he has read about them, but they don't know him. He is a stranger to them. Then all the sudden he gets the opportunity to befriend one of them. He jumps at this, and even possibly "crosses the line" of his position with his people by warning Jack about things he perhaps should not (the cameras). Not that Jack wouldn't know about the cameras, but still it is very interesting. Wouldn't it be fascinating if one of these days a character like Tom or even Juliet ends up taking residence at camp on the beach?
