View Full Version : Vintage Submarine
Saukkomies 03-22-2007, 01:42 AM That was a WWII vintage submarine, folks. I can't wait to see some screencaps of it when they get posted. But definitely it was OLD.
IN OTHER WORDS:
Older than Dharma.
So whaddaya think about that????
jonboy861 03-22-2007, 02:09 AM Definitley possible, weren't there quite a few people who also said that any of the guns were lugers, and other guns found during the World War 2 era?
johnnywishbone 03-22-2007, 02:19 AM here ya go Saukkomies.....just a couple, but they're all at lost-media

lostgurl 03-22-2007, 02:22 AM There's some more pictures of it floating around here somewhere. They were taken during the middle of the day, someone in Hawaii who caught them filming.
quangtran 03-22-2007, 05:44 AM Is it even possible for a Submarine like that to sneak up to the Elizabeth?

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean the Queen Elizabeth passenger ship?
hiltop 03-22-2007, 12:06 PM He means Desmond's boat, but I'm not sure why.
johnnywishbone 03-22-2007, 12:14 PM my guess is that he's referring to the theory that the sub was used to sneak up on Sun and Sayid (Jin too?), when the Others decided to commandeer Desmond's boat.
There were discussions as to how they snuck up on them so easily, maybe coming in from the water, instead of having to walk down the dock.

we know they used the sub to get des boat, when they returned there was something said on the walkie to danny about the sub returning

Okay, I forgot Libby's boat (Desmond's boat) was named Elizabeth... Man, sometimes there just so much to remember in Lost! Anyway, of COURSE they came in from the water when they snuck up on Sun. Sayid and Jin were on shore keeping an eye out on the entrance to the pier.
johnnywishbone 03-22-2007, 01:08 PM Yup, I agree guys,
no question about it (well as sure as one can be with respect to anything on lost, lol)
but I was only trying to explain what quangtran's post was referring to.....
so there ya have it

Sure, I mean, I hope my response didn't come across as offensive or anything.

no worries dude
i didn't take it that way at all
i was only trying to convey my position on the subject,
didn't want ya to think i was disputing the claim :)
Fogey 03-22-2007, 05:17 PM So the sub is older than Dharma - I think the only thing that means is that even Dharma had a few budget constraints and bought some used equipment including war surplus. Heck I have a military surplus 22 rifle that dates back to WW II, It is older than I am but still functional. My having it only proves I have it, nothing else. Ditto the Others & their sub, it only shows that they do did have a sub.

I looked up some old WWII vintage submarine photos in the Jane's books in the library, and the sub we saw last night looked an awful lot like a WWII vintage boat. It appeared to have been originally built for military, not research purposes, and pretty much every military submarine built after WWII was of a much larger scale than the one we saw last night. So I think we're pretty safe in assuming that it was a WWII - or possibly earlier - submarine, intended for military purposes.
Now, what was it doing there? Here I think we have a couple of possibilities:
1) The submarine somehow ended up on the Island just like the other ships that have shown up there over the years (Desmond's ship, the Black Rock, maybe others...). In this case, what happened to the crew?
2) The submarine was brought there by Dharma or some other group of people associated with the Island (basically your idea above). In this case we don't need to wonder too much about what happened to the crew.
Still, it's good to make a mental note of all this, who knows but it may come in handy some day...
annie_monica 03-22-2007, 06:27 PM freakin awesome. another mystery, hopefully tied in with something else.
Saukkomies 03-24-2007, 12:54 AM I decided to do some more digging around to find some more stuff on this submarine, and I came across this photo, which really ought to be considered a spoiler. So if anyone doesn't want to see a broad daylight shot of the submarine that was used in the filming of the episode, don't click on the spoiler part below:
(http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t292/geoffislost/?action=view¤t=sub1.jpg)Photo of Submarine (http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t292/geoffislost/?action=view¤t=sub1.jpg) (http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t292/geoffislost/?action=view¤t=sub1.jpg)
After looking at that photo, I am sort of unsure about some stuff. First, I originally assumed that the production crew had got their hands on an actual submarine from the local Honolulu Army Navy Surplus Outlet. But from what it looks like, it appears now to be a model that they constructed for the shooting. Maybe. I don't know for sure. When I was looking at the screencaps of the submarine from the episode, we only saw glimpses of it, and these glimpses were taken at night, so it is very difficult to really make out too much of the actual submarine from those screencaps.
Second, I don't even know whether or not the interior scenes of the submarine were filmed inside of the sub we saw, or whether they were done on a set constructed somewhere on dry land.
What I was basing my conclusions on in regards to the age of the submarine was the ideas that the crew were filming an actual submarine, and by comparing what I saw from the screencaps to Jane's books, I came up with the idea that the submarine was a military (not research) vessel, and that it was dated back to WWII.
However, now that I've seen this photo (in the above spoiler), I am revising my thinking. No longer do I believe the production crew were using an actual submarine to film. However, perhaps they still wanted to make it look as if it were a vintage WWII sub. But basically, what this all boils down to is that at this point I don't know my rear end from a hole in the ground as far as this submarine goes. So, your guess, I suppose, is as good (if not better even) than mine.
Back to the drawing board...
lostmio 03-24-2007, 01:18 AM So whaddaya think about that????
I've 'toured' a WWII sub, exhibited dockside, and I'd rather bust rocks and eat Dharma oatmeal forever than take a 3-hour ride in one.
Actually, though - come to think of it - the interior shots with Locke showed that one to be luxuriously spacious compared to the one I was in.
I could be wrong, I just remember I wanted OUT of that thing.
