This thread I suppose will have particular meaning for anyone trying to figure out "the time thing" re: it being 4 something when they crashed, but still being light out for a while, etc.

In Ben's home I was trying to notice as much as I could, and this was one of them : His clock on the mantel read somewhere around 4:30 - even though we know it was dark outside.

Now if they have electricity there is no reason why the clock shouldn't be functioning, although I suppose it could have been ornamental; but assuming it wasn't, what is the significance of the time in relation to the perceived time outside?

It looked more like 3:25 to me.

Which is why I said around - I couldn't quite see the hour I just knew it was in that vicinity.
Regardless, it doesn't fit the time of night that they are all prowling about.

it could be AM and not PM...which it would be dark then.

Things to consider:

1. What time does it go off of? When its 3 something here is it dark in other countries. So what timezone are they going off of and does that timezone corralate with what timezone they are in.

2. Do they make up there own timezone since technically where the island is there is no set timezone. That being said who is to say what time day and night are on the island.

3. It could have easily been 3am. It has been shown that when people have no set schedule they need to follow or no guiding schedule time does not matter as much to them. Meaning if you put someone on and island and they have no concept of time they may very well be sleep different hours than your typical midnight to 8am. The Other's and Losties have no set shcedules so time does not mean the same to them as it does us. There are no stores hours, tv times, work hours, resturant hours and such to guid them. For a perfect example of this watch shows like Survivor or Big Brother. They are not dictated by time so late night for us does not mean the same to them. They sleep when tired, are up when they have had enough sleep. The hours don't always fit the normal pattern.

It was AM. Jack said they leave in the morning.... and then they started to leave

Didn't they wait until the middle of the night to go by the Others?

Not the middle of the night, they said they'd wait until it was DARK.

I doubt everyone in otherville is up at 3 am. It would make much more sense if it was around 11-12 when Kate entered Jack's "house" - shortly after he parted with Juliet.

Do you mean Kate, Sayid and Locke? Yes, they were waiting until it was dark.

I thought it was early morning so 3:30 a.m. makes sense. But what was Alex doing up so late? ;)

I'm not being funny here: I have yet to watch the episode a second time, but I thought the clock said 4:20, or shortly thereafter. It kinda' jumped out at me, and then I realized that maybe I was supposed to be examining the photos of Alex instead.

It does seem strange that os much time passed betwen "dark" and when the action started going down, but it could be as simple as the team waiting until they had a clear shot at getting into the house unnoticed.

i think the clock was ticking. and, i think sayid's watch said 6-something when he was handcuffed. atfirst the clock looked like 3-something, then later, 4-something, then even later, 5-something. it's probably functioning correctly or fast.

Yes, they did say they were going to wait until it was dark. But they ALSO said that they were going to wait until Jack was alone. The clock reading 3-4 a.m. would be fitting completely. Especially since Jack went out to leave shortly after "in the morning."

okay - i rewound, and after Alex comes back from getting the bag, the clock says one thing, then a few seconds later, something totally different. from looks like 12:3? to 4:14

I just noticed this myself! Just after Alex returns it says around 12:35, we cut away for two seconds, and after that it says 4:10ish or 4:14 or whatever. There is no way they'd let something that obvious slide, would they?
