Ben kinda plays off the question of how they maintain electricity on the island by saying the whole hamster wheel thing...but how is it going..i mean that has to be expensive? I have a feeling...that Locke's father and Ben may be pulling a con on Locke...and Cooper is actually funding the Others by paying for electricity and the sorts...also..Jack's father could also play apart behind all this...what if he faked his own death as well..i mean look, his body is not ther...say it wasnt even in the coffin to begin with cuz he's not dead. And one more rich guy is Desmond's girl's father? I mean his daughter knew wat to look for to find the island (electromagnetic disturbance) and the wine that Cooper was drinking was the same one her father was drinking...perhaps because they are behind it together? Just a long thought...tell me what u think?

I feel in due time we shall find that Paik, Widmore and Christian Shepherd helped with the funding of the Dharma Initiative. To what end we shall see.

I felt like the electricity comment was a nod to all the people in all the boards that asked over the seasons-"where does the electricity come from"- Since they said they would start revealing answers this season I thought it was a tongue in cheek answer to a question I have read over and over.

Uh, this was clearly answered in the episode... not understanding why there is a lot of confusion here. Obviously the hamsters are more evidence of an underground network of tunnels and facilities on the island.

well we all should know by now that the big so-called fence was not actually a fence but a hi tech ion fusion frame relay overdrive iglicken e-factical electrical generator. :)

Jack's father (Christian) is DEAD. TPTB have confirmed not only that when a character dies, they stay dead, but that Christian is DEAD.

ok..well perhaps he did die...because he was a drunk...but did he play a part here still? could he of known about this island..and contributed to the reason of why many of them are ther? if not..i still believe Cooper and Penny's father are behind this, this is all a con..sawyer gave the definition of a con: "making you think it was their idea when it is really your own" and thats wat alex said...its all a con!

Electricity wouldn't be "expensive" on the island. At least not in a monetary sense. They don't get a standard electric bill or anything...

Somewhere on the island they must have a generator, or a big field of solar panels or something. Thats what Locke meant by how they get their electricity (A question my dad has been asking since the start of season 2).

Maybe they power the island on 9 volt batteries they pull out of the box.

Great answer! This is my favorite theory.

In the tropics everything is bigger. The hamsters are white and look like polar bears.

Could be solar panels we haven't seen yet, like maybe the whole snowglobe, which I am sure is designed to absorb light...otherwise the islands(s) would be visible by satelite and planes.
Could be petrol dropped with the food to fuel generators. Could be another geothermic source on that part of the island.
Could be an army of underground giant hamsters.

well i still find it crazy that these guys (Cooper; Jack's father) are popping up in the most crazy place (Claires past; on the island)...is it because they are involved with it? They all seem to be conmen...Ben is...Cooper is...and Christian Shepard has a hidden life under his belt...what does all this mean?!

From what we've seen on the island - the hatches, the resources expended to get people there/the "indirect" influence of Widmore, Paik, Hanso, Dharma etc. I seriously doubt money is an issue.

Are you crazy? There's no way they could have actual, physical hamsters. It's obvious the hamsters are just metaphors for the giant gerbils that are actually powering the island.

Well, it does seem that with a whole island like that at your disposal you could set up a nice system using natural resources like wind or solar power, I mean if you had the collateral and know-how to get it set up in the first place--and Hanso/Dharma do seem to be giant companies that could feasibly set that up. But the hamster thing eludes to something underground that may be an explanation.

Isn't there a mythological monster that continually turns a wheel underground, maybe I am thinking of The Lord of the Rings, the monster within the mountain whose motions make a beating sound? Anyhow, perhaps that's Smokey's gig.

I hope it's hamsters. I love the visual.
Heh, maybe it's Pinky and the Brain. "While Ben is busy with the crash survivors, we will take over the island!"

I've always wondered where the children are... maybe they are running in the not so massive wheels after the polar bears proved to not have the qualification.

In the second season there was a mention of geothermal power at the Hatch.

Yeah, that's the most logical explanation. I wonder how much electricity a geothermal station is capable of producing? That sonic fence looks like it uses up a lot of power.

I really wish they would stop doing that. It's been happening again and again since the end of season 1 when they addressed Hurley's weight. It really takes me out of the show and gives them another reason to give themselves another smug pat on the back.

i have 2 ideas on this...:

1: the ring that surronded the others/hostiles camp that killed mikhali (what ever his name was lol) they absorb the light/heat and transfer it into electricity..

or...

2:When kate jack and sawyer were captured we saw kate and sawyer minning/digging for unknown things, this 'thing' could of been coal which they then put into a furnace and generated electricty. However juliet or picket did say it was a experiment (or a project) so this is probally unlikely and sawyer and/or kate probally would of noticed coal of some sort....

I thought that when Kate was talking to Jack she said that watever it was they were doing "its big" like they are building something maybe?

Creating electricity is something which is possible outside the island. There are various ways to do it, different kinds of generators. I don't think there has to be a spooky mysterious explanation for it. I think there are more pressing questions that John once again failed to ask, heh.

Freakin Amen to that! I think we are going to get a lot of explanations once it goes back to the Locke/cooper story..but that wont be for another 4 weeks! NOOO!
Hey maybe if ther is a Hampster in the woman's lamp in the painting in Ben's house...then Ben was rite about the hampster wheel theory...and they used Juliet to breed the hampsters (including the males) to run it!
