I think there was already a smoke on the table when he picked up the radio after Ben and Juliet left the station.

The minute they showed that paulo and nikki knew about the hatch I thought about that cigarette....seems to me that he must have kept going back there, probably being overly paranoid about the diamonds.
Also what struck me was that he heard ben and juliet talking about taking sawyer kate and jack....but thats a conversation for another thread.....

Question: where would Paulo have gotten a cigarette? Even Sawyer quit smoking early on in season 1, didn't he?

i'm pretty sure that wasn't a cigarette in the pearl hatch....... let's just say it reminded me of my college dorm room.

I think the cigarette we saw when Locke and co. entered the Pearl Hatch did not belong to Paulo. If I'm remembering right, it was one of the first things they saw when they entered the hatch, and the butt was still smoking! Am I remembering that right? If so, then it begs the question, "Who's down there smoking a cigarette when our losties barge throught the door?" It looked like Ben and Juliet used a different entrance than the one that Paulo used from the ? location. Could this possibly be one of the underground tunnels that are eluded to on the hatch door map and confirmed on Sayid's electrical conduit map?
