View Full Version : Never grew to like them, glad they're gone
pacejunkie 03-29-2007, 12:07 AM I thought we were supposed to feel differently about these two once we saw their backstories. So they murdered a man for his diamonds and then they double crossed one another. Sorry. I never grew to like them. Nikki was flat out psychotic and I had no sympathy for Paulo because he made his own bed. I loved the episode, it was fun seeing everyone trying to solve the murder but I'm glad we can wash our hands of them and move on now. The "who the hell are you" joke was going to get old really fast.
I'm sorry they were buried alive because that's just icky, but I'm glad they're both gone and that's that.
LostLaura 03-29-2007, 12:10 AM Buried alive was creepy and cool but just plain weird. The whole episode was weird for me. I was ready to like them. Ready for them to be iconic. And this is what we got? Are they supposed to be iconic because they were buried alive? I have no idea. But they were horrible and I'm glad they are gone. At least, I assume they're gone. I mean, you can't survive being buried alive, can you? Of course, I never thought you could survive an 8-story fall either and just end up paralyzed.... ;) Apparently, their paralysis lead to death but Locke's near death only lead to paralysis.... weird.
(4.8.15.16.23.42) 03-29-2007, 12:14 AM It's just leading up to season 4...the ZOMBIE season...
Diesels Blitz 03-29-2007, 12:14 AM I think they actually did a good job acting and their story was more interesting than I thought, but if someone had to go i'd want it to be them. What they did to the old man was just wrong, but some of the other survivors pre-island actions weren't much better.
LostPack 03-29-2007, 12:15 AM I completely agree.. in fact, if anything I was disliking them more and more as the episode continued. I wasn't impressed with the attempt to integrate them into things - and don't see how their story made any difference in the whole scheme of things. If the purpose was to show that there's other activity going on that we haven't seen... well.. yeah... but hey, can't we just focus on what we already know instead of showing other stuff that really is not germane to anything.
I did like seeing everyone -- but it just was way to much of a forced effort to throw them in -- and those scenes are scenes we already saw... been there, done that.. adding 2 new faces doesn't change a thing.
MinnieVanMommie 03-29-2007, 12:18 AM Agreed to the fullest....i didnt think they were likable at all....I need the 10 oclock endings cause i cdant stay up this late discussing this anymore...grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...lol
good night all...
bunnyrabbit 03-29-2007, 12:19 AM CAN we be sure they are gone???? Not only is this TV land, but this is our beloved land of Lost, where anything can happen. I'm with you Laura, can you survive being buried alive? Didn't
Niki's eyes open just as the dirt was hitting her? Could she fight out of all that dirt??? I hate to say it, but I hope not!! I was hoping tonight we would be done with both of them, and I squealed with delight when it looked like they both were gonners.
pacejunkie 03-29-2007, 12:21 AM What was weird was that they remained on the periphery. Paulo was in the Pearl but only to hide the diamonds. He did see Juliet and Ben but didn't say anything to anybody. I thought they were going to be involved with Ethan, the abduction of Charlie and Claire or maybe witness Sun's attack. They had nothing to do with any of it. They had their own goings on and they died. That's it. I thought their was going to be a bigger reveal about what they were up to on the island, not just a continuation of their off island backstory that really doesn't involve or interest anyone. Like Sun said, the diamonds are worthless here, so who gives a ----?
elfdream 03-29-2007, 12:22 AM Who were these people and why should I care that they died?
I liked seeing the last 80 days in review from another angle...but apart from that I felt nothing. I couldn't even bring myself to get creeped out at the buried alive thing.
Betsy 03-29-2007, 12:23 AM Loved the eppy, but Pikki got exactly what they deserved, and in a manner befitting a couple of murderers. Let them slowly suffocate....they were nothing but a bunch of thieves out for themselves. Hmm. I wonder if that's what Darlton meant by iconic. Fans already hated them, so why not make us dislike them even more.........and have them die a gruesome death? They didn't have any redeeming characteristics.......except to actually give a really fun backstory. I just enjoyed this eppy immensely - it really should be aired on Halloween, the ending was that creepy.
Also, did Darlton ever say we were supposed to like Pikki? I thought it was just that we were to understand them.......well, I sure understand them now, which is pretty cool. At least there is some substance to them (dishonest, but still); before, they were just bland nothings.
cylune 03-29-2007, 12:25 AM Glad the screentime sucking vampires are gone. Now that they had their moment, I won't have to put up with them. Lost is a better show without them.
palomino_grl78 03-29-2007, 12:26 AM Just think, these guys could have prevented a lot of trouble if Paolo would have told someone about what he heard in the hatch about Michael. But he had his own agenda. I hope they don't dig their way out.
lostgurl 03-29-2007, 12:28 AM I thought their story was kinda cool, seems like maybe they both realized they were wrong in the end. I thought they did a pretty good job, but that's just me.
JohnnyREB1977 03-29-2007, 12:31 AM I actually enjoyed this episode. I don't love the characters of Nikki and Paulo, but I do understand them more now. I tend to think that, if we'd been allowed to see more of them, they might would have become more interestin'.
gumpy5 03-29-2007, 12:32 AM Was the part where the director says that he could bring Nikki back onto the show supposed to foreshadow that they weren't dead during the episode, or that they will return in a future episode?
I hope it's the former, this episode really made me hate those characters.

100% agree

Wow, a good point. I hadn't thought of that. Paulo was so concerned about the f-ing diamonds, and no one else. I am so glad he is dead. You could say that partially he is responsible for what happened to Hurley, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Michael, and yup Libby and Ana.
I am so glad he is dead, and Nikki too. They were murderers.
rabidranger 03-29-2007, 12:36 AM Darlton's comments aside, let's be happy they saw fit to rectify a mistake (the introduction of Pikki), and removed them from the scene in a most delicious and permanent way. Sometimes you swing for the fences and miss. Pikki was one of those times.

I agree. That's exactly what this was and with a dose of good humour, Darlton did a good job (in the immortal words of dead as he may be Boone) of cleaning up their own mess. ;)
Save The Humans 03-29-2007, 12:42 AM :wavey:
Now, back to the story!
(Oh, and do get around to explaining why James didn't know who Pikki was, OK? Thanks!)
sickotriz 03-29-2007, 12:58 AM I kind of felt like the whole point is we weren't supposed to grow to like them. At the end, when I learned that the spiders just paralyzed people, I was on the edge of my seat hoping they wouldn't wake up. Nikki really gave me a scare there at the end though.
It was great how they just sort of died in the beginning with no explanation. Which is EXACTLY what we have been asking them to do with these characters since they reared their heads. They were a good tool for going back and exploring some of the old scenes from a different perspective.
I never grew to like them. I loved the episode, it was fun seeing everyone trying to solve the murder but I'm glad we can wash our hands of them and move on now. The "who the hell are you" joke was going to get old really fast.

I never grew to like them either, even tho' I thought Paulo's accent was quite sexy.
When the ep was over, I'm thinking, OK, they're buried alive, so what? I'm thinking that it's not the last we'll see of them, though. They can crawl out of that, it's just sand. (Then again, I did read a lot of Tales from the Crypt when I was a kid...)
Yeah, I thought the The "who the hell are you" joke got used up earlier than the writers did.
It was kind'a neat to see Arntz again, and see a little more of his life on the Island before he...well, you know.
pacejunkie 03-29-2007, 01:23 AM I don't think they'll be crawling out. That much dirt is pretty heavy and it only takes a short time for them to suffocate. I don't think they'd be able to dig out before they suffocated.
100%

That was how I felt. I didn't want anyone to see them wake up I was so hoping they'd both be gone.
I really liked how they went at the beginning and turned it into a murder mystery. In a way, the whole diamonds story really mimicked that campy Expose show that Nikki was acting in. It was like a joke within a joke.
lostfan4ever 03-29-2007, 03:22 AM I wonder if Vincent will try to dig them up? He knew they were not dead.
Billy Shears 03-29-2007, 03:34 AM Vincent, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and an International Harvester backhoe together could'nt dig them out in time. They are dead. It'll be total BS if they're not. No one can hold their breath that long.
LostApril 03-29-2007, 03:34 AM I agree with 99% of what has been said about this eppy in this thread.
Cool to see everyone again. (AWW...I miss Boone & crabby, snotty Shannon..heh)
Nice work with the timeline. (Thanks for letting me know they do realize they missed Thanksgiving.)
I will say this. I was very annoyed at first about the "flashback" from the pilot. The second I started seeing that I yelled, they re-shot the whole thing!! It was irritating. They were not in those scenes. So much better to have Pikki wake up like Jack did in the jungle or something than to throw Pikki in as if they were supposed to be there all along. I mean, I understand the purpose..show us things that we as fans can say "hey, i recognize this" & place them in the mix. I still think it would have been better to have them "land" somewhere other than the beach.
OK....off the soapbox.

They didnt reshot it they placed her infont of a blue back drop and then added everything else, I thought it was cute how Boone went up to her and asked her for a pen. It was also good to see Ethan again I miss him
