View Full Version : Was Paulo looking at something after the crash?
After the crash, when Nikki eventually finds Paulo, he's just staring into the ocean. He seems fixated on something but the camera never shows the water or where he's looking. But he definitely seems to be staring at something, as opposed to his eyes wandering across the ocean. What could it have been? Plane wreckage? Something else?
Lunch 03-29-2007, 01:25 AM He reminded me of Boone in Locke's dream sequence with the "Teresa falls up the stairs..." part

Considering the fact he just survived a major plane crash, I think he was stunned, in shock. Probably realizing just how important life is, that money and diamonds are not.
lostgurl 03-29-2007, 02:11 AM Yeah, I think he was just in shock, and then Nikki starts talking about the diamonds immediately and he knew that's all she was concerned about.
RodimusBen 03-29-2007, 02:14 AM That scene definitely showed that Nikki was the more scumbag-ish of the two. Diamonds, diamonds, diamonds.
Guinevere 03-29-2007, 03:44 AM I wondered if he saw something too - like that little flying thingy that went into one of the jet engines and blew it up but it seems it was only to show that Nikki was much more ruthless of the two.
marninthian 03-29-2007, 03:49 AM maybe the other island?? or smokey??
CoffeeBean 03-29-2007, 04:41 AM The way Paulo was standing, when Nikki first saw him, seems to me he was in a middle of something and then saw a shocking stuff.
I don't thinking he was staring into blank and was just thinking of his life, etc, etc....
Since we are in this staring incident topic, James was staring at something too after they found Paulo body.... Hurley interrupted him....
I bet there is more to Pikki and their connection with James...

I too was waiting/hoping he was going to give us more clues about the crash...but he understandbly stood there in shock.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
:)
It is possible he was just in shock, but I mean... by the time we see everybody, absolutely no one else was doing what he was doing. Meaning... no one else was just gazing somewhere. So, I found it odd that they showed him staring fixedly at something in the ocean. If you want to say that he was just in shock after surviving a plane crash, don't you think a more reasonable place to be staring would be at the wreckage or in the sky, not the open ocean? And let me point out again that his eyes weren't wandering, they were fixated on something. This is something that the directors had to tell him specifically. If they told him "just appear in shock, looking into the ocean," I'm very sure that he would have been casting his eyes all around. So they almost had to tell him "stare in one place," which is what he was doing.
Also, not necessarily related, but the next time they show them talking in the flashback, they're talking about the monster.

That was Sawyer seeing the fresh mound of dirt that Nikki dug which he admitted to noticing later.

..
Sawyer said what he was looking at. He saw the dirt mound where the diamonds were buried (and he said something else too, but I can't remember what now).
dangerousdirk 03-29-2007, 08:41 AM my opinion is that he actually saw something, or thought that he did. I realize he was probably in shock, but they seemed to focus on him focusing on something.
teksmith 03-29-2007, 10:32 AM When the plane crashed and Nikki finally found Paulo, he seemed completely distracted by something off in the distance - out in the ocean. I kept wanting them (TPTB) to show me what Paulo was looking at, but they never did. Did anyone else notice this?
MacTown 03-29-2007, 10:35 AM I thought he was just in shock.
But it does seem that when people stare off on this island they're actually staring at something. (Sawyer and the loose dirt mound in the same episode, for example).
missed_the_plane 03-29-2007, 10:44 AM Yes I definitely noticed this too. I would think that if you were in shock you would be staring at the carnage, not out to sea.
Fierro 03-29-2007, 10:45 AM He saw a pterodactyl... He thought the mosnter was a dinosaur after all...
polusmaximus 03-29-2007, 11:57 AM He saw the tip of a submarine? <---Insert dramatic music here
omgimsolost 03-29-2007, 12:01 PM I thought he was awfully intent on staring at something too. And since it's Paulo that appears to be one of the most observent people on the island...I find it plausible that he was looking at something.
LostLaura 03-29-2007, 12:03 PM I thought he might have been staring at something, but I think it was another red herring from TPTB to make us think that he was working with the Others, when in actuality he apparently wasn't (which would have been much cooler....).
Madge 03-29-2007, 12:20 PM I got the impression he was looking at something and it was bringing tears to his eyes. I figured it was something similar to Locke looking at the monster and finding it beautiful. It could have just been shock, but I think (hope) there's something more there.

Smoke(y) on the water... fire in the sky...
Geeze Now this song is going to be playing thru my head all day

I don't understand your statement. Why would him staring at something in the ocean hint that he's involved with the Others?
emmadoggy 03-29-2007, 01:31 PM I thought he was fixated on something too, not just staring out in shock. He had a very strange expression on his face - one of... wonder? incredulity? confusion? SOMETHING. I don't know - but I was irritated with Nicki for dragging him away from it and not, instead, looking out to see what he was staring at.
connrick 03-29-2007, 02:37 PM Maybe he saw the Sub???
He saw everything else in 80 days(Hatches,Ben,Juliet,Planes,Walkie Talkies,Monitors)

that was a person
maybe he was staring at the ocean because he drowned and smokey saved him he looked much more beat up then alot of the other losties. or maybe he saw the sub that was my initial reaction
MellonCollie 03-29-2007, 02:45 PM Hopefully this will turn out to be something interesting. I definitely took the expression on his face as him seeing/experiencing something strange. (Something other than surviving the crash.)
BillToons 03-29-2007, 02:55 PM I think he saw the boat Ethan was driving by in.

He's staring at the sea. Bad things come out of the sea (like mysterious cables.) People drown in the sea. The Tailies came down in the sea, and save for Bernard (who had Rose's love in a sense "protecting" him) they are all dead.
Perhaps he saw his death...
PapaThor 03-29-2007, 11:15 PM i thought paulo was in shock and was
looking at the ocean because his brain
couldn't handle the physical sight of the crash.
in other words, his mind was looking for
something familiar that he could
relate to.
also, his mind may have been looking
for something soothing... like the ocean.
if i had been in his shoes, i might have done
the same thing.
hiccup 03-29-2007, 11:16 PM Big piece o'plane landed in the water, did it not? Slowly sank? I think he was watching that, or simply in shock.
*hic*
Saukkomies 03-29-2007, 11:26 PM He was watching his brief stint as a character on Lost sail off into the sunset... and sink.
PapaThor 03-29-2007, 11:29 PM He was looking at his short brief stint as a character in the show as it sailed off into the sunset...
yeah, that too.
p.s. i saw him on the sci-fi channel a few weeks ago.
he was some kind of mythic god character.
pretty good acting also.

HERMIT 03-30-2007, 12:08 AM Maybe he saw how easily the Spartans were slaughtering his soldiers...
Oops - wrong character....
Desmundo 03-30-2007, 12:21 AM Maybe the smoke monster was dancing the can-can on the waves, he seemed to be mesmerized somehow. Maybe Smokie was invisible and scanning Paulo's sexy head at the time when he was interrupted by icky Nikki.
khopzilla 03-31-2007, 10:12 PM Hmmm seems to me that Desmond was throwing rocks out at that same area earlier this season. Maybe there is something to this more than being in shock?
TheLostProject 04-02-2007, 01:43 AM My theory:
The scene was supposed to be him in shock, staring blankly at the sea.
But since all of us here at the Fuselage decide to delve deeper than necessary, TPTB are going to write in a new story arc to go along with Paolo looking at the "ocean" and then say, "It was the plan all along". I'd buy it.

Maybe a little slow coming off the anesthetic.
thehandofgod 04-02-2007, 02:24 AM Maybe he was looking at the monster!?!?!?!?!?! But most likely he was in shock.
joanarcaic 04-02-2007, 09:51 AM shocking moment for Paulo....
Fierro 04-02-2007, 10:25 AM I'm on the camp that think he saw something. It may be related to how they survived such a fall.
satine 04-09-2007, 09:10 AM Maybe he was in shock, but it is quite a weird one.
I guess if I had just survived a plane crash and I was in a middle of a shock, I would stare at the fuselage like saying "look where I was travell in" or cry like Shannon, or something like that. But he, instead, wakes up from wherever he was, walkes through engines in fire, dead bodies, people yelling, a boy asking for pens, and goes to the farest place in the beach, at the very start of the shore, and stays there.. watching.
That is a hell of a shock! :undecide:
I definatly think he's not just blank, he is looking at something, focused on something; he's not just looking at the void like he would if he was in shock.
Fierro 04-23-2007, 01:37 PM what about this: He was looking at the last traces of a faint purple hue in the sky... Desmond has just missed the timer, letting the EM shield start building up around the island temporary, catching Flight 815 in mid flight, cutting it in 2. After he managed to reset the computer, everything went back to normal and the shield started to dissipate. That's what Paolo saw.
SawyerKicksButt 05-02-2007, 11:27 PM Yea prob. or he mayhv been in shock or something
Desmundo 05-05-2007, 08:06 PM Yea prob. or he mayhv been in shock or something
Well, knowing what we know now, that a plane wreck could have been staged in a deep Bali trench, maybe he was seeing some entity scoop up the dead bodies floating on the water, to be used in the fake trench wreck. That would make no sense to the average survivor, and he wouldn't be able to explain it, especially after what he'd been through.
