View Full Version : Any way to confirm the Monster noise is indeed the Monster noise?
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 02:13 AM It would be incredibly helpful, as convincing as it sounds, for other purposes.
Like, where would I look or ask to get confirmation? Or would there be some sort of podcast soon?
Just compare it to monster sounds from S3E5 (if you have it recorded) when Eko is attacked. The noises are identical.
I'm sure it'll be mentioned in the official lost podcast, which is usually updated every Monday or Tuesday.
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 02:18 AM That's good. I would compare it but I don't have the audio for this episode's just yet. Tommorow! (Unless somebody has the audio clip!)
Monday, Tuesday? Thanks a ton!
penyours 03-29-2007, 02:24 AM It's definitely the monster noise, I've listened to that sound hundreds of times in doing the audio analysis for the show.
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 02:28 AM *I* know it is, trust me! I'm just trying to prove this to some other people, and that's really it. So the proof would sinch it (ie. juxtaposing a confirmed one and this one).
diggitydirge 03-29-2007, 02:41 AM it is indeed the smokey sound. In the abc podcast a few weeks ago, someone confirmed that the printing sound we hear when we see smokey is a NYC taxi ticket printer. I can't remember if it was the interview with the guy from Lost Mag, or the lady that runs the set.
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 02:56 AM I know, it's just for this episode.
But i got it! Someone posted a ytmnd of it (also helping me prove it to this guy) and now I made this quick thing: http://media.putfile.com/Monster-Noise---Juxtaposition-of-Ep0305-Ekos-death-and-the-new-ep-11
But thanks though!
wedestroymyths 03-29-2007, 03:08 AM i don't need to hear it to know...i was watching the show, sort of enjoying it but sort of bored and i hear the noise and perked right the heck up and said..."where's the freaking monster..." then I saw the spiders and it all made sense...

It seemed fairly obvious to me. It's certain that the spiders weren't making that noise. Also, why would Nikki suddenly look around as she did if it weren't for some odd noise in the vicinity? Go back and look at the scene: Paulo confesses his fears. Nikki starts to look sad/pouty at him and then the sound comes. She forgets Paulo and starts looking about. THEN the spiders come as she is looking about for the noise.
It seemed like a very big hint to me. Clearly the noise is connected to their fates. I'm not sure if the spiders were brought on by the noise as "The Professor" give us a natural explanation for their appearance (very strong pheromones, drives male spiders crazy for miles around), but the smoke monster making it presence known and Nikki and Paulo meeting their demise seems more than coincidental.

No, no, wasp2020. What you don't understand is having Penyours confirm it is as good as having the audio in hand. Believe all of us here at the fuselage. Your friends need to know this
Guinevere 03-29-2007, 03:26 AM It's definitely the monster noise, ...
I totally agree with you, Pen! I heard it and went "Uh Oh!" and then the spiders showed up. Once again, the monster manifests itself and deals it's own brand of justice. Mwa ha ha!!
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 03:43 AM Trust me, I know!
But this guy thinks The Fuselage is a joke.
If you must know who I'm trying to prove this to... http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs9/genmessage.php?board=225&topic=34403126
It's a very frustrating topic (I probably shouldn't have linked to it >_>), but now no doubt you'll understand the situation I was in (he's always like that, I'm surprised he hasn't insulted my religion or something again yet - EDIT: Never mind, looks like he already did).
But thanks a ton, pen, and everyone else.

im so glad you said that, because in the pilot when we first here the noise Rose says that it sounds like something from back home, and she was from Queens (i think)
i wonder if her saying that was some sort of inside joke or relevant somehow

Rose is from The Bronx I believe.
annieone 03-29-2007, 03:27 PM sheeesh, I have to watch that scene again. I saw it twice already and heard nothing but the suspense music... I could not understand why they were looking around, though. Will try again..
I recorded this clip earlier for a different topic, it's from this episode. The rattling comes in around 12 seconds into in. Might wanna turn your speakers up a little.

wasp2020 03-29-2007, 06:14 PM Thanks all!
I posted the clip I made...but the guy is still being extremely stubborn. "It's just the spiders!" he cries. So it looks like I'll have to wait until a certain Gregg Nations topic gets answered or the podcast >_>
That's GameFAQs users for ya...
Margalit 03-29-2007, 07:39 PM I am a MAJOR fan of Pen from the Whispers thread, so I feel a bit blasphemous saying this, but the sounds from Expose sounded like a rattlesnake to me, not the grinding-chain-on-a-roller-coaster noise I've come to associate with the monster. I was sure Nikki was going to be bitten by a rattlesnake!

LOL Margalit I'll have to look into what the proper punishment for blasphemy is ;) But yeah I guess we should state that there are probably over 15 distinct sounds used for the monster and the combination of sounds differs from appearance to appearance, so yes you are correct there wasn't the grinding chain or roller coaster sounds as we saw in other episodes like exodus. What we heard this time was a clicking sound that's seems to be linked to the little whispy smoke that scoots around the jungle, like we saw in the Cost of Living just before Eko saw all those zombies and the little boy. (Oh I should say I'm going off of what I heard during the broadcast, i haven't analyzed the audio in depth)
wasp2020 03-29-2007, 11:26 PM ^ The Grinding Chain is only one of the noises produced by the Monster.
From a good post in that GFAQS topic:
++++++
Jetra Vard
1.Scouting/Surveillance-the monster does a fly by of the perimeter of its' target area moving swiftly and undulating like a snake through the trees or brush around its' prey. This is when it uses the rattlesnake noise.
2.Hovering/Confrontation-A bizarre otherworldly collection of animal growls, various motor rumbles, with some rattlesnake thrown in. (I just watched the Ecko stare down scene on youtube and the rattlesnake sound was EXACTLY the same) If the monster appears as something other than smoke there will be no hovering noise. i.e.-Ecko's brother. Spiders?
3.Grabbing Various machine-like whirs, clanks and the sound of a chain being wound up. Reminds me of the sound you hear on a roller coaster when the chain pulls the cars to the top of a hill.
4. Distant A loud foghorn type noise. This sound seems to terrify survivors more than the others and shows the monster means business. It usually sends the survivors running as fast as they can to the relative safety of the beach.
+++++++++
What we heard when Locke was being nearly taken by Smokie was 3. What we hear when Smokey is a wisp - right before Locke was taken, or when Eko was killed, is 2 - sounds just like a rattlesnake (is actually a cab tax machine). And that's what we heard tonight.
EDIT: Oops, too late >_>
bladen38 03-30-2007, 03:09 AM It was deffo the monster music, i know that sound and will for the rest of my life, lol
Margalit 03-30-2007, 11:09 AM Ok, Pen, when you determine my punishment, just let me know! I have now added to my not-so-dependable memory the equation rattling=scooting little smoky. Grinding roller coaster chain=BIGGER threat!
Fierro 03-30-2007, 12:13 PM It IS the same noise. Captions always describe it as 'rattling' noise...

Okay Margalit, I've just finished consulting with the higher powers and your punishment is to buy excessive amounts of ice cream for you children or younger cousins, or friend's children!!
