Perhaps they aren't in the South Pacific. shootfire 03-29-2007, 05:07 AM Heh, I thought it was just a tongue-in-cheek allusion to Arzt qualifying for a Darwin Award. :p Ladybug_ocean 03-29-2007, 03:44 PM :105: abbybaby 03-29-2007, 04:13 PM I thought it was intesting how Artz said he had discovered at least 20 new species of bugs? Reminded me of the Galopigos (sorry about the spelling) Islands where there are many species of animals that exist only there and know where else in the world. South Shore 03-29-2007, 04:23 PM I was thinking that Artz would have really loved to have lasted a bit longer on the island. Imagine the questions he'd have at the Hydra station, let alone how he'd likely enjoy talking with Juliet about how she impregnated a male field mouse. He was displaying pure joy at finding all of these new species of bugs. A true science teachers dream! wentwj 03-29-2007, 04:23 PM Any time you have an island thats isolated for a LONG time you're going to have a lot of unique species... I think it just shows that the island has indeed been isolated, and if the species hasn't been documented, means the island hasn't really been visited by mainstream scientists to document them. How about this: Dharma Initiave Zoologists CREATED new species of animals! Island of Dr. Moreaux type stuff, ya know? Maybe they created a new species of human as well! Superhuman Losties unwittingly drawn back to the island! Anything is possible. beth8i8 03-29-2007, 05:05 PM How about this: Dharma Initiave Zoologists CREATED new species of animals! Island of Dr. Moreaux type stuff, ya know? Maybe they created a new species of human as well! Superhuman Losties unwittingly drawn back to the island! Anything is possible. I LIKE this idea! After all this time and now seeing that the Others are just "regular" folks (to some extent, anyway!), I can't figure out how Ethan got Charlie hung up in that tree in S1. Jack and Kate couldn't figure it out either. There was some discussion of several sets of footprints, but with J&K so close behind, even 2 Others may not have been able to achieve such a thing. The savage Jack beat-down I can buy, but the hanging? How'd he do that? SUPERMAN!! 8i8 sickotriz 03-29-2007, 05:20 PM Heh, I thought it was just a tongue-in-cheek allusion to Arzt qualifying for a Darwin Award. :p Indeed  Good one! Quinch 03-29-2007, 05:22 PM I was thinking that the fact he discovered all the new species might be relevant. Perhaps they aren't in the South Pacific. I think it showed that the island is REALLY isolated and probably has been for quite a long time. LostMyMarbles 03-29-2007, 05:37 PM I think it was Arzt ribbing his own sense of self-importance. Remember, Darwin's big clue came in the Galapagos, an isolated Pacific island archipelago where unique species developed. Extreme isolation, Dharma-created species, timeshift--interesting possibilities! abbybaby 03-29-2007, 05:43 PM With all this Darwin talk I wonder if the Others feel that they are a much more Evolved race of humans and this is why they think the Losties are incappable of Understanding the island. Well, all the losties except Locke I guess.:34853_huh: connrick 03-30-2007, 03:35 PM I was thinking that Artz would have really loved to have lasted a bit longer on the island. Imagine the questions he'd have at the Hydra station, let alone how he'd likely enjoy talking with Juliet about how she impregnated a male field mouse. He was displaying pure joy at finding all of these new species of bugs. A true science teachers dream! I think they showed this scene because the way Artz went out in Exodus made him look stupid. He preached all day long that the "Dynamite" was highly unstable and then he blows up. This scene shows Artz in a different light and also shows that he had an idea of what he was talking about. For me it makes me admire his character better than the last time we see him. HeadFirstForHalos 03-30-2007, 04:39 PM And how do we know he discovered new species? Just because you are a science teacher and you went to college, it doesn't mean you a familiar with every species on the planet. To him they are new, but they may or may not be to other(no pun intended) scientists. EmptyJar 03-30-2007, 07:10 PM The only problem is the Others haven't had much time to evolve... Ben was there all his life but he said he is one of few which kinda says to me that most of the others are recurited from the mainland... Realy can't evolve in a span of 20-50 years... unless you're a bacterium :P Superhuman Others would be weird, physically at least. However, they definetly have an elitist attitude, so maybe they aren't superhuman but believe they are? Because of the island... (which apparently 80 day locke understands better than 40-some year Ben). As for Arnzt's comment, i think he was just embiggening (a Simpsons word) himself. We all (researchers) would love to contribute as much as the historical greats, however, I guess a select few are doomed to mishandle dynamite. For the many new he found, he recognized some too (at least the one he called Latrodectus regina). This suggests to me that he may have been able to suggest a general location for the island. A line like "they're native to the south pacific AU/NZ area" might ahve been a cool plug for fans that may still be wondering where this island is... Fiver 04-01-2007, 01:15 AM I had another thought - maybe Artz found all the new species because that was his dream, so the metaphoric box manifested lots of new animals for him to "discover." Billy Shears 04-01-2007, 02:25 AM This ep showed me Artz was smarter than he seemed in S2, and it's clearer to me why the writers needed him gone before he might have offered an expert opinion on the functions of the Swan hatch. He became flying hamburger just hours before they got in there. Same way that Libby died just before her old sailboat showed up. Too bad, he was one of my favorite characters. |
