View Full Version : Jules the martial artist
jennylee27 04-05-2007, 12:29 AM Wow, Juliet sure did kick Kate's butt during the opening sequence tonight. I somehow don't see the mousy woman who lived in Miami being such a skilled fighter. Of course, Sawyer found out that many of the Other men weren't skilled at all, and he would have taken a whole crowd of them during if Juliet hadn't pulled her weapon on Kate.
When do you all speculate she learned to fight?
Do you think we'll see her get lots of Other-y training next week during her flashback?
GettinLost 04-05-2007, 12:31 AM I'm thinking that in the last few years she has been trained in MANY different ways...
South Shore 04-05-2007, 12:32 AM I remember Ethan working over Charlie pretty good. Goodwin was a pretty decent fighter as well, though Ana-Lucia was just that much more clever. I'm thinking there has been a good amount of downtime in her three years on the island for Juliet to have earned a black belt.
ame en peine 04-05-2007, 12:37 AM She's been through some sort of boot camp, for sure.. Four dislocated shoulders? You don't get those doing fertility experiments on lab mice.
LostLaura 04-05-2007, 12:39 AM Seriously. There must be Others training. She is way too skilled, and the line about dislocated shoulders certainly stood out.
Melikon 04-05-2007, 12:40 AM Ethan & Goodwyn must have taught her some moves.
thedudeinokc 04-05-2007, 11:42 AM I keep waiting to see footage of the Others crossing monkey bars like in an Al Quaeda propaganda film.

Ha! Kind of like the Dharma initiative video with the DeGroots and the other Michigan graduate students doing calisthenics.
MasterCrackle 04-05-2007, 11:49 AM Yeah, it seems most of the Others have some kind of martial arts training.
Since they've got a "game room", maybe they have a sparring ring/ training building they use.
Mormegil 04-05-2007, 03:41 PM While I suspect she got her training with The Others, I just wanted to point out that it's entirely possible to study martial arts and be a scientist.
I'm a graduate student studying molecular biology and a Jeet Kune Do student at the same time. Yet I'm not an "Other" (or so I claim).

They have it...remember the second video? It shows the Dharmas in matching jumpsuits doing jumping jacks and all kinds of fun stuff.
girlspy15 04-05-2007, 04:29 PM I thought that scene was awesome. One of my favorites in the entire episode. Hope we get to see more of kung foo Juliet. ;)

Im glad Im not the only one to feel like there is too much emphasis on "super martial artist Juliette". Sure, she was impressive, but my 6 year old son is a orange belt in Kung Fu and he learns self defense along the same lines. He can throw his father over his shoulder and I can guarantee he's not an Other.
DevilChaser 04-05-2007, 06:39 PM I have been surprised with Juliet's ability to fight and defend herself considering she has a medical background. Do you suppose she went through some Others Bootcamp or is the training from another point in her life?
Thoughts??
Admiral Erik Pressman 04-05-2007, 06:49 PM Just a little info about the next ep, but watch out apparently this stuff rates pretty high on the spoil-o-meter:
Apparently something happens to Juliet (the fb's are set right after NIP) that causes her to change in a big way. We'll understand why she's so hardcore now.
John_is_Lost 04-05-2007, 06:55 PM In Less then a week!
tiewashere 04-05-2007, 07:24 PM sweeeeet....
she's the devil :D
TK 421 04-05-2007, 07:29 PM Awesome news I can't wait! Juliette's transformation from the sweet research assistant who is dominated by her EX-HUSBAND to the gun-toting, tazer-zapping, butt-kicking con-artist (maybe) is gonna be a great story. Man I was just amazed by her last night!
So yeah I'm thinking they all go through some sort of combat training in the Other Camp, maybe ever since the war with Dharma and since the island sucks so many people in the training would come in handy
Snost_and_Lost 04-05-2007, 07:40 PM i was wondering the exact same thing. when she walked in I was like, "uh oh, kate' gonna kick HER ***" and then i was like daaaaaaaaaamn!
yeah she does have some moves but i think the reason she got the better of kate in the opening was because they were watching her on camera saw her getting up with the pool cue and somehow got the word to juliet, maybe some sort of ear piece?
Richardstone 04-05-2007, 07:56 PM I thought it was pretty evident that she had skills when she downed Jack with one very carefully aimed and powerfully delivered punch...
You don't knock someone of Jack's size out-cold by accident and in this episode we saw her take Kate down without breaking into a sweat, she's clearly had training in hand-to-hand combat (I don't think she's had any "I know Kung-Fu" moment) and judging by the way she offed Pickett I'd wager she's perfectly at home with firearms too.
The Others are ready to defend the island, the question is from who?
bgmacaw 04-05-2007, 10:02 PM i was wondering the exact same thing. when she walked in I was like, "uh oh, kate' gonna kick HER ***" and then i was like daaaaaaaaaamn!
"Enjoy your sandwich." Steven Segal couldn't have been any cooler.
Now, thinking back when Jack had the drop on her in the Hydra tank, that incident was almost certainly a setup staged by Ben and Juliet. If she had wanted to she could have had Jack cryin' for his Mama. :eek2:
MFerris 04-05-2007, 10:25 PM I love the fact that she can kick butt, the move she put on Kate was just classic.
I'm not sure that I even care why, but maybe the Others practice Thai Chi in the morning.
Admiral Erik Pressman (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/member.php?u=56530) - wow - that was a major spoiler. waaaay too much information there. a major, major spoiler. i feel like i know what Lost is all about after reading your spoiler!
Admiral Erik Pressman 04-05-2007, 11:21 PM Sorry I'll edit that post so it includes a disclaimer.
I really thought that was pretty well known by now; I think it's mentioned in an Elizabeth Mitchell interview as well as in the ep press release. Again, sorry if I over-spoiled you.
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 11:23 PM I'm not sure I understand what all the confusion is over Juliet being the hardcore warrior. Early on in the season Juliet had Kate held at gunpoint and Sawyer later tells Kate that Juliet wouldn't have thought twice about pulling the trigger. Juliet being combat trained seems to me to have been set up from day one.
Now, when they showed her being pathetic off island, that's when I kind of got the feeling her story mirrored Locke's a bit. So when they traded places, I thought it was fairly appropriate. A player in each camp now.

Good point about the trade off, female Locke...hehe
There are two theories i guess, one is that ALL the others receive extensive combat training, but we know that isn't true due to Sawyers little escapades.
Which leaves only a few of the others get combat training.
She has it, we knew that already from the way she punched out Jack.
Also Ethan has it.
Pretty obvious from the way he totally dominated Jack when they fought
This leaves me to think they trained together or received their training together for some reason, and id chuck Goodwin into that group as well.
Sawyer DID say one of the others he fought knew "some kind" of martial art.
Im gonna take a wild guess and say: Systema!
Its a Russian fighting technique developed by the Russian special forces, it looks a lot like what weve seen so far from Goodwin, Ethan and Juliet, and we KNOW Mikhail was Russian military.

To some extent I'm guessing they've all had at least some training, and yes, it's clear some hostiles were softer than others. I'm also guessing that this training would be required since they were knowingly putting these folks in harms way re: conflict with DHARMA. Perhaps that's just it, they were recruiting soldiers to take DHARMA out.
bladen38 04-06-2007, 02:54 PM There's training and there's training, i doubt many people could react that way with such speed while opening a door with one hand and a plate of food in the other, was very cool, almost Matrix style fast.

I'm with you - and Jeff Jensen who wrote the following in his last "TV Watch"-column "Chain Reaction" (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20033758,00.html)!:
I was struck by Juliet’s kung fu. Where did she learn it? How had she dislocated her shoulder three times previous to Kate’s takedown? And given the presence of Mikhail Bakunin on the Island during her Othersville experience, might Juliet be versed in the Russian martial art of systema, a quasi-mystical fighting style that in some forms purports to incorporate mind-over-matter powers?

That's what three years of on-island training should do to a talented student! Check out some examples on the Internet as comparison.
Elizabeth Mitchell is skilled in karate and boxing so maybe she flipped Heather Arthur (See "The Show Last night" (http://heatherpoohs.blogspot.com/2007/04/show-last-night.html), please.) herself?
wickedsmat 04-10-2007, 05:06 PM The whole thing struck me as gratuitus. Like a Charlie's Angel episode.
Stumper 04-10-2007, 05:29 PM Just another case of making stuff up as they go along to fit their needs.
themanikilled 04-10-2007, 05:43 PM I suppose it is possible she got trained on the island, however the move didn't strike me as neccessarily military caliber. I think you could probably learn that as a civilian self-defense class.
I was just surprised that Kate was taken down so quickly. If I had bet before watching I would have put money on KO by Kate.
jennylee27 04-11-2007, 12:00 PM Just another case of making stuff up as they go along to fit their needs.
I'm not sure how you would define this as "making stuff up." We saw her take Jack down right after her character was introduced. Sawyer thought she would shoot Kate. It's been in her character all along, just hasn't been as blatant.
ashamilton_linke 04-11-2007, 12:27 PM I also think our Losties aren't as well nourished and supposed to be little weaker -- so not as hard for the others to take them down. I bet Juliet had some defensive training, but a full balanced diet also helps.
