By the end of this episode, do you think Kate grew as a character and will finally learn from her mistakes?

I think that finally at the end with Jack, she realized what her mother had been trying to get across to her. I also think it will help her relationship with Sawyer. "You can't change who you love, good or bad." Her mother said. (Or something to that effect...

As a character on the island, I think she is growing. Her interactions with Juliet are leading her very slowly to a new perspective on the others (I think?). But if we are talking about her flashbacks, or the murder of her dad, I don't think she's gonna budge on that one for a while. I voted that she'll never learn because although I don't think that's entirely true, I think she's very slow to change.

I was pleased to see Kate's mother finally set the record straight that Kate killed her step-father in cold blood and for purely selfish reasons.

She should be in prison. Maybe she is.

Kate's still growing to be a good/better person on the island, like everyone else is. I don't think she has completely learned everything yet to be a good person, but I know she is getting there. Just having a hard time knowing who to trust and confide in fully still.. Like with Jack and Sawyer.. she's back in that love triangle again.

Kate needs to learn to break free from one of them and just love and care for one guy. I know it is hard for her to do that, since they both love her. So, she's still trapped. Yet, when you see her come back (in the next episode preview) you see her walk up to Sawyer. So, it makes you wonder if she'll decide to go back to him. She's gotta learn let go and move on from Jack, if she wants to be with Sawyer. If she wants to be with Jack, than she has to learn to let go of Sawyer to be with him.

To sum this up.. Kate has to learn to let go and move on from the past. From all her past relationships, hardships with her family, she has to be willing to trust, be honest, and fully love the next man in her life. To be herself and no one else. She's gotta stop running.

I don't think the island is the best place to learn to trust someone...

Kate is learning, just slowly. She has been trapped in a box for so long. Run, use someone, Run some more. She is in a place that she can't run from. She is being forced to examine her life and sometimes that takes some people time. They aren't ready to change.

When I read the title of this thread, I thought that no, she's the same height as she was when she crashed on to the island.

Anyway, I think all of our characters that have suffered such profound disappointment and loss due to a family member (Kate, Locke, Hurley, Sawyer, Jack, Charlie, Sun, well, maybe everyone!) are growing in their own unique ways. It's taken a long while for Kate to grow on me, but I appreciate her so much more now that we know more of the story. I felt the same way about Ana-Lucia, and I think that we'll feel the same way when we see Juliet's flashback in the next episode.

Am I the only one who feels bad for Kate and thinks her step-father (but in fact, real father) actually kinda deserved what he got? I mean, the writers haven't full on made it clear but it was rather hinted that he not only beat Kate's mom but must have hurt Kate too, probably sexually. I don't think murder is the answer by any means, but I can actually understand "what Kate did." Why is everyone so darn hard on the girl?

As far as growing, yeah... I think everyone on the island is doing so in some way. Kate is learning to stop running and hopefully someday she'll forgive herself for what she did. Her mother certainly wasn't gonna do it - she was too far gone in the role of good little abused wife to see clearly. I feel utterly bad for Kate coming from a mom who would sooner take the side of a wife beater over her own daughter. I think kate's doing the best she can and people oughtta cut her some slack.

It's taking quite a while for Kate to learn some things. I think the situation with Jack now has gotten her thinking. She will leave him alone, now that Jack has Juliet he seems to be giving her the cold shoulder. I know he is hurt since he saw Kate and Saywer, plus Kate having to do with ruining his chances of leaving the island. I think Kate will be alot smarter now, after all this has happened. In a way she will have to be fending for herself now and not have Jack to run and talk to all of the time. She knows how to take care of herself and even though she has feelings for Jack I think it will be good for her when there is some distance between them.

"You can't change who you love, good or bad."
You can't change who you are, good or bad, either. You can only learn to behave differently. Kate needs to learn to love herself before she gets involved with any man.

I don't agree with her mother. Certainly there were selfish reasons involved but Kate would never have bought the insurance policy if her reasons were purely selfish. She was concerned about her mother as well as herself. Kate's mother spent her life putting Kate second. She is part of the reason Kate is the way she is.

Am I the only one who feels bad for Kate and thinks her step-father (but in fact, real father) actually kinda deserved what he got?
I don't know that anyone deserves to be burned alive but the guy was definitely scum and judging from the way he lechered all over her, probably abused Kate as well as her mother. He certainly deserved to be punished.

Yes, I do feel bad for Kate. Talk about being alone in the universe. Her parents betrayed her, her husband married someone she was pretending to be, not her, Jack has turned his back on her, Locke has judged her and walked away, and her closest friend in the world is a con man. The most dependable relationship in her life has been with the marshall who was trying to put her in prison. And now she's been left behind.

I totally agree with you. After this episode , the way she cried saying sorry sorry over and over at Jack. I felt so sad for her, saw this lonely left behind girl in her. She trully was raised alone, her mum ( unlike a real mother) put her child 2nd and picked her over a drunk, abusive man. How can a Mother do such a thing for her child. ( Something I ll never get! ) She did something for THE ONE person she cared and loved , look what she got ? Cops chasing her , betrail.

Maybe she is learning. Too slow, but she is. Juliet has punched some sense into her.
But seems like she has realized she Lost Jack.

I do think Kate is learning. Cassidy also stated something similar to Kate with the whole "you can change who you love" business.

I think that's why she felt so badly about messing things up for Jack. He didn't ask for her help just like her mom didn't ask for her help.

I was so angry at her mother! I mean talk about wife beater syndrome! She could care less about her child! I too feel really bad for kate, yes she's made mistakes but she's been given so little love and compassion and those people who's she's let in have always dissapointed her and left her behind (hehehe), can you blame her? Its gonna take a little while for kate to grow up and trust again, this episode I think was the beginning of that.

THANK YOU!!

Who are we to judge anymore than the Others judge...We dont know her full circumstances...and I would bet the same thing. I am not justifying murder by any means here...but when you push a person beyond all reason they can sometimes resort to things they regret. When Cassidy asked her why I got the same gut feeling I did when the Marshall was saying all that to her in the car in his patronizing way...When she said he never touched me...( I wouldnt have told his sorry a** the truth either).
