View Full Version : Desmond...Hmm...
TheLostProject 04-05-2007, 02:44 AM Desmond was on screen in this episode I think twice. Once while hunting. And VERY briefly when Hurley shared the pineapple with him.
And for some reason I was most captivated by him in the end sequence. Personally he is by far the most "INTRIGUING" character right now. I felt like I got a lot of bits and pieces out of Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Juliet/Smokey this episode, but the scene that left the lasting impression was Desmond sitting by himself on the beach at the end, looking concerned/troubled/hopeless.
I felt bad for him. I can't wait for his episodes. FBYE was the best episode of this season for me.
Here's hoping he can use his "flashes" to help the Losties discover their moles (yes plural, because Jack is the 'cobra'). Sabotage by Juliet/Jack.
Dolphinjen 04-05-2007, 02:52 AM ITA he is the most captivating character. He's so mysterious. Even though we learned a lot more about him in FBYE I'm always wanting to hear him speak and know what makes him tick. He's a fascinating character, and he did look quite troubled during that last bit. I wonder if he was having FBHE?
LostGroupie 04-05-2007, 02:56 AM I thought the same thing too! Maybe he's already seen the future for some/all of the Losties and it's pretty dismal, but can't do anything until it comes to fruition. :undecide:
palomino_grl78 04-05-2007, 07:58 AM i definitely agree that he is completely fascinated. I think he is always looking troubled because he feels like an outsider. He isn't one of them.
Now that Julliette is slated to come to the beach...he will have someone who can relate to him not feeling like he belongs
Plus, seeing visions of someone dying can be worrisome too. Poor Desmond, he needs a hug.
Lostie97210 04-05-2007, 08:40 AM Totally agree--love this character. When we saw him for those little moments, I was so curious. And he's hot.
Danelectro 04-05-2007, 09:06 AM I'd hug him. A lot. This is precisely what was in my thoughts while I was watching this scene. I hope he'll be getting some more screen time, although in these brief scenes we see him, he's so fascinating.
lostlocke 04-05-2007, 09:10 AM My sis and I wanted to give Des a big hug! Seeing him sitting there all lonely and unhappy looking. Awwwww. I too want to see Desmond more, I have been disappointed that he hasn't been in any episodes lately for a long period of time. He just shows up here and there. Come on people, Desmond is the man, you gotta give him more airtime!
Dolphinjen 04-05-2007, 12:01 PM And he's hot.
Well, we certainly can't forget that!! :hypocrit:
LostKitty 04-05-2007, 12:14 PM Thanks for this thread! Last night I just kept asking, "Why did Desmond look so sad?" But the idea that maybe he was having another vision makes sense. So thanks for you imput!
Oh, and yes, yes, yes, to giving Desmond a hug!
Debisobsessed 04-05-2007, 02:27 PM He looked sad, and gaunt. He's looking the worse for wear lately.
dano626 04-05-2007, 02:39 PM Id be sad too if I could see people die in the future and know I had no power th cahnge the final outcome.
BillToons 04-05-2007, 02:48 PM Desmond doesnt seem to happy with his "gift".
hiccup 04-05-2007, 02:56 PM That last shot of Desmond was totally swoon-worthy...And a very poignant bit of acting from our Ian.
Hugs--
*hiccup*
Lea_Lost 04-05-2007, 02:58 PM I don't believe he was seeing something, he looked meditating and when he sees it, he is more stressed out. (which is very understandable)
He is sad, lonely and haunted. I so loved Hurley for bringing him the food and making him smile
RodimusBen 04-05-2007, 03:14 PM I agree that Desmond has made a tremendous addition to the show, even with his limited role so far. He clearly feels like and outsider and his efforts to fit in have been largely rebuffed. Charlie pushed him away out of jealousy, Desmond insulted him, as did Sayid. The rest barely pretend he's there, even though he has become the new boar hunter. Really only Claire has warmed to him.
Selene1212 04-05-2007, 09:36 PM He looked sad, and gaunt. He's looking the worse for wear lately.I agree. In Expose his hair looked absolutely nappy and this week his clothes appeared dirty. What happened to sexy, shirt half-buttoned Desmond? :frown: I hope he's not falling into a deep depression. He seemed stronger than that.
LostKitty 04-05-2007, 09:37 PM I have faith in our Desmond! It's just been a roungh week for him. He'll bounce back.
desmondslosthairstraighteners 04-05-2007, 10:24 PM Well whenever he shows up you know Charlie is in trouble sooner or later. Maybe he looked sad because he's had yet another vision of Charlie dying, but this time he's not going to save him, because he can't keep defying fate.
Probably looking too much into a vacant stare though, although rampant speculation does no harm!
palomino_grl78 04-05-2007, 10:35 PM Maybe he was just staring at the ocean. It's only been a few weeks since he has left the hatch. Maybe he's just soaking up the scenery.
nancy 04-05-2007, 11:28 PM Don't forget how season 2 ended; Penny knows where he is. Maybe he will have a happier storyline soon.
Selene1212 04-05-2007, 11:31 PM Don't forget how season 2 ended; Penny knows where he is. Maybe he will have a happier storyline soon. That remains to be seen.
Admiral Erik Pressman 04-05-2007, 11:40 PM I think we can trace all of Desmond's problems this week to one thing: him buttoning the top two buttons on his shirt. This is clearly a poor fashion choice as well as just being plain dorky. However, if somehow Sawyer could orchestrate some elaborate con in order to get Des to unbutton at least one button, the situation might change. Who knows, by the end of S3 he could even be back in that awesome blue shirt?....
Sorry that was really obnoxious. I really like Desmond too and can't wait for his next fb!
The_Others_2005 04-05-2007, 11:43 PM Well I mean he has to be a troubled man, he had to lost the love of his life twice. He's seen Charlie die who knows how many times, and he knows that even though he can try as hard as possible, in the end he's powerless to stop Charlie's death. Then again he can't give up, because he;s not a selfish person, so he has to live with Charlie's life hanging on his shoulders.
What a terrible burden.
LostKitty 04-06-2007, 12:26 AM Probably looking too much into a vacant stare though, although rampant speculation does no harm!
:24: I want that to be my Lost motto! Can I have it?

Absolutely. He will never let Charlie die, and that has to be a horrible burden, especially considering that it is his alone.
Lady EKO 04-06-2007, 12:34 AM It doesn't look like Charlie is going to die anytime soon( much to my delight) Des looked like he could really use a hug before Hurley came over with the plate.:pinapple:
palomino_grl78 04-06-2007, 07:27 AM Don't forget how season 2 ended; Penny knows where he is. Maybe he will have a happier storyline soon.
We don't know that she knows that he is on the island. It could be a coincidence and she is looking for something else or in charge of a project that concerns the island (my theory:biggrin: ) .
I agree with the whole shirt buttoning scenario. He needs to let the top 2 go and get all of that fresh island air in. Maybe he is having Geronimo Jackson withdrawal.
I do agree, that if I kept having flashes of someone, anyone, dying I might be a little down myself. I think Vincent needs to pay him a visit. Dogs are good at cheering people up.
piscescat 04-06-2007, 09:11 AM Maybe he was just pining for his lady... it was evening, I think, and dinner was cooking, etc. Maybe he was wishing he was with Penny having a nice dinner. Just a thought. And yeah, the button theory is pretty funny! Buttons down - much better.
SmokeMonster 04-06-2007, 09:12 AM I think Des is just feeling lonely and burdened. The "Flash" makes him miss Penny all the more, and he feels weighed down by the constant mission to save Charlie. The scene made me want to hug Hurley even more though. He really is the glue that holds them all together.
lostgurl 04-06-2007, 09:38 AM If Desmond is having a hard time because he keeps seeing Charlie die, do you think the flashes will stop completely once Charlie is dead, or somehow breaks the curse?
Will Desmond just go back to being normal, or will he be burdened with having to see people die all the time? I don't see him ever being happy if he has to live this way the rest of his life.
desmondslosthairstraighteners 04-06-2007, 09:40 AM :24: I want that to be my Lost motto! Can I have it?
Yeh you can have it!
WheelOfDoubt 04-06-2007, 11:18 AM i think he looks more tattered and stressed each episode because he's afraid to sleep
he's afraid to dream
TheLostProject 04-06-2007, 11:50 AM He is sad, lonely and haunted. I so loved Hurley for bringing him the food and making him smile
Although I loved Hurley bringing him the food, I think it would've been more emotional and more "fitting" to have Sawyer actually bring it to him. It would've been reminiscent of the Sayid throwing Sawyer an apple moment in S1.
I agree with everyone, poor Desmond. Seeing flashes probably gets you depressed.
Interesting that he doesn't have flashes about anyone else dying, just Charlie...
Dolphinjen 04-06-2007, 03:38 PM i think he looks more tattered and stressed each episode because he's afraid to sleep
he's afraid to dream
Wow, when you put it that way it really puts things into perspective, what he's got on his shoulders. He probably is afraid just to sleep. That would suck. He's such a nice guy too, he'll go to whatever length to avoid harm coming to someone. And harm coming to someone on this island is really pretty inevitable, dontcha think?
sttct 04-06-2007, 04:19 PM He practically looks like he's given up. Like he knows what is indefinate and he's just stuck. That's my take on it.
ggjustice 04-06-2007, 05:20 PM Des is lonely. No doubt. It breaks my heart to look at him sometimes.
But didn't you all love his surprised/appreciative reaction to Hurley bringing him some food? When he smiles his whole face lights up! Sigh.
btattersall 04-06-2007, 06:22 PM I was struck somewhat differently by Desmond on this episode.
It seemed to me his shots were cut in stark contrast to Sawyer's happy and now leading self. Sawyer was eating the boar, holding the baby, etc. While Desmond sat on the beach, and was brought stuff.
Having been in that hatch for a long time, and extremely alone, you would think that Desmond would be happier. He knows the island better, seems better equipped (military training, preparation for the round-the-world yacht race) and has visions of the future. However, none of these traits have allowed him any status in the losties camp. He provides meat (along with Jin) but still Sawyer, the smart assed redneck, is falling into a position of power, (until Jack comes back.)
no wonder he's sad.
nancy 04-06-2007, 07:05 PM Also, he's been drinking a good bit to cope with things, and now hasn't been (either they ran out or he just needs a clear head to stay on top of saving Charlie), so I imagine he isn't feeling all that well.
Ketch22 04-07-2007, 11:02 PM It seemed to me his shots were cut in stark contrast to Sawyer's happy and now leading self. Sawyer was eating the boar, holding the baby, etc. While Desmond sat on the beach, and was brought stuff.
Desmond was his usual selfless self by shooting that boar and obviously letting everyone think Sawyer had shot it for them. Even though Desmond did this on purpose to help Sawyer (who has not, as he pointed out, said more than 3 words to him) perhaps he felt sad because he seems doomed to always help others and no one helps him. :frown: *volunteers to help Des with regular hugs at least*
LouisianaLostie 04-08-2007, 03:55 AM You know, my husband and I had a surreal moment last Sunday. During our Palm Sunday service, the video screens were showing pictures that illustrated the last days of Jesus while the minister was telling the story, and lo and behold, Jesus was played by our Desmond. Alot of the expressions we saw in those pictures were the same as we see on the show - worried, dispairing, wise. It made me think of the parallels between the Desmond character and Jesus - not understood by all, troubled, all-knowing, savior (of Charlie) hmmmm....
