View Full Version : Downtown
chemgirl81 04-11-2007, 11:14 PM Was the Petula Clark song "Downtown" in "A Tale of Two Cities"? At the very beginning of that episode when they are showing Juliet's home before the book club I know some song is playing.
Regardless of whether or not it was in both, does it mean anything? Is she going "Downtown" to the beach?
he he.

Yes it is. And IMO it does mean something.
island hottie 04-11-2007, 11:22 PM Lyrics, although I can't see a single hint of anything in them:
When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown.
When you've got worries all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help
I know - downtown.
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
you can forget all your troubles
Forget all your cares
so go - downtown
Things will be great when you're - downtown
No finer place for sure - downtown
Everything's waiting for you.

LockeLove 04-11-2007, 11:39 PM I think what they are trying to say is that you can escape to the island and run away from your problems. No one is going to know you are there.
whispervixen 04-11-2007, 11:49 PM Downtown - Juliete's theme song as is Walking After Midnigh Kate's :D. Do any of the other characters have their own "theme" song? (besides Charlie)?
Sarah Mai 04-12-2007, 12:01 AM I think you could find significance in it. I think it could show Juliet's desire to go back to her home. There isn't really a "downtown" on the island where Juliet can go to forget her troubles :p She wants to be back in the States where she can go downtown and listening to the song maybe brings back hope of that wish coming true.
Tyler Durden 04-12-2007, 12:42 AM Downtown was the song playing on the car radio when Juliet and her sister arrived at Mittelos...so the song reminds her of the last time she saw her sister.
KyleSBeaver 04-12-2007, 12:47 AM Desmond has "Make Your Own Kind of Music"
Dolphinjen 04-12-2007, 12:54 AM I liked the juxtaposition of the song with the scene showing the furniture rumbling and everyone running outside and seeing the plane break apart. It was eerie in a way.
LostLaura 04-12-2007, 12:56 AM It was a really nice montage. I loved how they connected it back to NIP. It made me wish more and more that S3 had been continuous, because then NIP wouldn't have felt so very long ago. The connection would have been more clear.
I didn't notice that Downtown was playing in the car, so thanks to who pointed that out.
Chekhov 04-12-2007, 12:57 AM Wasn't this an episode of Seinfeld?
drmark7 04-12-2007, 01:03 AM How about screencaps? Was it still a TALKING HEADS cd that she put in the player? (This was all pointed out in the first ep that had these scenes.)

I was half expecting Juliet to make a comment about how she put the CD in the wrong CD case.. that would've been the ultimate shoutout to the fanbase, I think. Consequently, however, it would've been severely lame. ;)

great catch! way to go tyler durden.
so blondie connects the song with her sister
and then she finds it in someone else's cd collection.
i would probably do the same thing and play that song over and over again.
i hope more people catch this connection.

2 tourists were driving through Wales and stopped for lunch in Llanhyfrydayellhnafolybarcudprindafgythiadtrienusx haffa.
They asked the waitress "before we order could you settle an argument for us?
Could you please pronounce where we are very slowly?"
The waitress leaned over and said, very slowly, "burrr-gurrrr-kiinngggg"
Billy Shears 04-12-2007, 03:29 AM Yeah Tyler, good one. Also ironically, it was written by Tony Hatch.:)
Sawyers Mojito 04-12-2007, 03:34 AM And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you
and needs a gentle hand to guide them along.
So maybe I'll see you there
we can forget all our troubles
Forget all our cares
so go - downtown
that portion stands out a lot to me. Especisally for thso ewith shady pasts i.e. kate, sawyer, charlie, ect..

No, it wasn't just the "wrong cover" it was the CD *itself*! The screencaps from the original ep showed the disc itself to be a TALKING HEADS cd. Someone was able to get the actual cd code number of the CD and looked it up. I think the cover shown that she held was a T-Heads cover, but it was the CD itself that could not have been "wrong."
Then there was the business that it seemed like Juliet was moving to the wrong music. I barely saw that notion in the original ep. But this recap did nothing to clarify that.
Don't recall the specific Talking Heads cd mentioned... If it has the
T Heads song, "Burning Down The House", might that have been appropriate in light of the house shaking while the plane crashed?

MegletTX 04-13-2007, 02:53 AM Yes it was definitely in A Tale of Two Cities!!! In fact that song will now be permanently ingrained in my head as a reminder of Lost (as is Make Your Own Kind of Music)!! They've been playing a commercial for some store lately (haha some commercial since I can't even remember who for) with that song and every stinking time I jerk to attention before I realize it ISN'T a Lost clip!! I think there has to be an ulterior meaning to it as well even if it's only as Sarah Mai said....
KUDOS to those who noticed it playing on the car radio!!! I MISSED that!!
Baileysdad 04-13-2007, 03:07 AM Wasn't this an episode of Seinfeld?
Yup...the one that George was working on "The Project" from Mr. Welheim...and he walked in the bathroom while George waited outside and kept talking about it and George had no clue what it was..and he told him the answer was "Downtown" so he and Jerry sang the lyrics looking for clues...
I heard it in the car as well and thought it was a nice touch. And it does seem like TOTC was FOREVER ago...man alive.
