View Full Version : Mikhail always has his walkie off

Why would someone so integral in communications "always" have his walkie turned off? Something to do with him and Klugh? I can't begin to guess otherwise. Clearly it didn't seem like Ben was saying he purposely always kept it off, but that it always seemed to be turned off. I wonder why.

Yeah there's got to be something to that. I have no idea what, though

Definitely significant. I have a feeling we'll be learning more about this...or at least we'd BETTER be. I also want to see how Juliet and Goodwin first got "involved." Hmmm...

Maybe Mikhail always had his walkie talkie off, because he had his own agenda. Mikhail might have been working with someone else. ..or he could have been a hostile? ( we still do not have any information on who /or what are the hostile....or could he had been planning something with Ms. Klugh?

Well, it was also evident that Ben considers Mikail a loon to some degree. :) Cracked me up when he muttered "Don't shoot us!"

Yeah, that was funny. I think Mikhail is just a loner, maybe a bit crazy. Doesn't want to be bothered all the time.

Maybe Mikhail didn't have his walkie-talkie anymore, after all, whose walkie-talkie did Paolo find?

The 3/20 podcast confirmed the Hostiles and the Others are the same group.

Paulo found the walkie 49 days after the crash.

Maybe that was the pre-arranged signal for Mikhail to start the "live feed" fantasy broadcast :p Just wondering... it stood out to me too.

I don't think it's anything more than the fact that Mikhail is a loner.

What a great delivery. Makes to think that Ben and Juliet should fear for their lives with their approach of that bunker. Makes me think of a lone gunman like Lee Harvey Oswald waiting there on the grassy knowl.

i think you're reaching for a new angle. it was just a great joke. its like the relative of yours who has a cell phone and NEVER picks it up, its irony. they instruct this guy to shoot anything that approaches and yet the only way to essentially converse with him is to get at him through the walkie talkie which he ironically never has on him. thats it. he is not playing basketball with Jacob or having sex with Klugh, its just ironic and funny as hell.

I loved that line, just made me think you can't get the right people for the right jobs. How come a one eyed guy becomes the head of intelligance gathering, lol. I mean if your job was to watch video feeds all day wouldn't you want a guy with two eyes!!!

Totally agree! I laughed hard at that line as well.

I think Mikail is the "town crazy." The creepy guy with the patch that likes to be alone. He's a little off. But as we saw, very skilled.

What a ridiculous suggestion. How many eyes do you think it takes to watch video screens? People who've lost an eye are not necessarily bad at surveillance. It's not even a case of depth perception being required - these are flat monitor screens he's watching. Mikhail could well have better vision than Ben, who wears glasses. Not that it's particularly important for the job he's doing.

True, but Sawyer only found it, what, two episodes ago? You have to admit it's a curious coincidence.

He was pointing out that it was found 49 days after the crash because when Mikhail had his walkie off in One of Us, it was the day OF the crash. So no one of the Losties had Mikhail's walkie then.

I'm thinking it was just a throwaway gag line, much like his "Don't shoot us!". Just there to show that Ben doesn't think too highly of dear old Mikhail.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that's it. He told Sayid & Kate he liked to be alone which was why he took the job. (And the podcast confirmed that Mikhail was not lying to them about anything except being Dharma.)
It's pretty funny that the communications officer never turns on his walkie though. Mikhail's now competing with Tom to be my favorite Other.

Clearly Ben is a control freak, and "forgetting" to turn on or carry his walkie (against Ben's orders) may be a bit of passive-agressive behavior on Mikhail's part.

He was clearly aghast at Kate's suggestion that Ben was "Him", insisting that he had been recruited by a "great man", which by implication Ben is not.

All of the Others seemed to have walkies on them all the time. I wonder how many Others knew the Mikhail was the communication guy who could get thim images of home. Juliette didn't know... but if people did... they'd be bugging him all time.

This explains why Ms. Klugh needed to ride up to The Flame instead of just using a radio.

And Pablo doesn't find the walkie for 49 days but Patchy could have lost it for 50 days. This would explain why they aren't missing a walkie talkie in the inventory.

Seems like a personality quirk.
"Do not disturb me while im playing chess"
or
"One more person calls me to find out what their team scored im going insane"

Hm... I wonder which of the others Patchie might have shot at before. Mebbe he's on the paranoid side if there was some sort of rift. I know the podcast mentioned earlier confirmed the others and hostiles are the same. Mebbe this rift was between Dharma people.

That's a good question! I would just say, as you and he already said, that he likes to be alone.. so maybe that's why he would turn his walkie off.

By the way, I really felt something going beetwen Mikhail and Ben; he looked really anoyed to have to go visiting him.. and I don't think it's just beacused he was angry for the walkie off, maybe there is somehing more. They don't seem to like each other much.

I thought it was a very funny line, showing that M is a bit nuts and unpredictable. If I had a slightly unpredictable, paranoid, nut working for me, I would station him as far away from others as possible. Seems that would be best for everyone, no?

ireneadler

Maybe not a loner at all. Perhaps he didn't answer the walkie in order to force people to visit him. It's just that no one else wanted to go there live with him, no wife or friend.

Bingo

Things are in the script for a reason on Lost

Ben was conveying to Juliet that he did not talk with Patchy to setup a con. Meaning-"Juliet..this is not a setup. Patchy doesnt know we are coming".

Which of course really means he did know they were coming

The 2nd thing that was there for a reason was the headphones. Why does Ben put on headphones and not let Juliet hear Richards side of the call? Because he was not there

Why..I dont know. But whenever these types of things are introduced through the script it means something.

3rd..why show the date? We know the date. Juilet knows the date. her sister has a kid and a full head of hair--the date means nothing..her sister was cured and had the baby. So the date was there to show more.

Personally I think Jacob healed her..but I think it was tape and Juliet does not know Time is moving differently on the outside

So basically you're saying that it wasn't live (the nephew footage) and it was a tape that Mikhail was cued to put in at that exact moment. And that the newspaper was created special, or obtained from an alternate time universe.

The 2nd thing that was there for a reason was the headphones. Why does Ben put on headphones and not let Juliet hear Richards side of the call? Because he was not there

Why..I dont know. But whenever these types of things are introduced through the script it means something.Um, Ben was using headphones because that's what you do with communications like that. You don't just talk to the wall and magically hear sound from speakers. And, assume he actually WAS talking to Richard, and this wasn't a con, do you think it would have been stupid to take time for Ben to go, "Hey Juliet listen, Richard really is on the other line, see?" Cause I do.

Also, I don't think having Richard speak to Juliet would have worked well for the scene. It built up to an emotional scene, and to debunk con theories would have taken too much away from its touching aspect.

3rd..why show the date? We know the date. Juilet knows the date. her sister has a kid and a full head of hair--the date means nothing..her sister was cured and had the baby. So the date was there to show more.

Personally I think Jacob healed her..but I think it was tape and Juliet does not know Time is moving differently on the outsideShowing the date there proves that it was either live or..... like you want to say, from another time. And frankly I'm just really not buying that time is moving differently on the outside. If the date would have said February 3rd, 2003, you don't think it would have made a difference?

Showing Juliet that she had a healthy sister and nephew was all that she wanted to see, right? Unless there's some other weird crap going on, the video (whether live or taped) showed her sister and nephew both healthy and alive. So they're okay, right? Why con her into believing what's true?

Unless you think that they WERE okay, but now are not. Meaning Ben/his people did something to her sister and nephew. And frankly, I see no reason for them to do that. They wouldn't want to upset Juliet, and also, I don't think they're the type that just kill women and their children for no apparent reason.

I don't buy the big conspiracy notion either... I think that Patchy was up to something and kept his walkie off because of it.

Patchy is the kind of guy who is all about business. He is probably a genius in some way and electronics is his bag. Because of that Patchy doesn't conform to the same thinking as Ben. When Ben and Juliet approached, Juliet was not aware of this station. Ben noted for her and us that Patchy might kill if someone approached without notice. Maybe Ben was thinking up a clever way to keep Juliet from returning to this station later. Ben is always thinking several moves ahead.

The walkie talkie is also a nusiance when your working around satelite equipment as it can cause static interruptions. There were a lot of clues in this little part of the EP. Ben noted the date (for us to figure the island timeline) for Juliet to give her a sense of real time so even if it was a tape and her sister is dead to Juliet it looked real-time.

Ben told Patchy to get the bio's on the passengers. The list's would be sent to Ben and patchy to do background searches on the survivors of the crash. Plus the good versus the bad survivors were defined in the background information. The whole island was probably linked up with this station to feed data back to whereever.

Blowing the station up was a huge loss for us but not for Ben. I am thinking that there is another method of communicating with the outside world and only a few other than Ben know anything about it.

The lay of the station where patchy worked suggested he lived out there and must have liked it, being on his own. There is also the russian documents and that suggested that the operation is world wide with diferent launages being transmitted and received. It my theory that Patchy was one of the Dharma group then got somehow endoctored into the Hostile group. Patchy wearing the Dharma jumpsuit suggested he still has some kinship with that group.

I am in the camp that believes that Paolo's walkie was left in the Pearl by Mikhail. Ben's saying that Mikhail is always leaving his walkie off was basically the writers tying up a loose end for us.

It was definitely Jules (http://bp1.blogger.com/_RrObyQ3XzcY/Rg5ZlWGYYBI/AAAAAAAADAg/Us0LO8LA2yA/s1600-h/misc1.jpg)

Besides - Ben made the comment about Mikhail on day 1, and it was day 49 when we see the Pearl scene when Paulo found the walkie. That's a long time for someone to mislay their walkie without noticing.
