View Full Version : Do the Others know about Desmond?
LadyJ27 04-12-2007, 12:57 AM They apparently were watching the Swan by means of the Pearl, but for some reason, I just don't think they know about Desmond!
Clearly some of you understand the island's timeline better then I do... thoughts?
KyleSBeaver 04-12-2007, 01:01 AM Good question. Juliet and Desmond both arrived to the island 3 years ago. I thought we might see Ben's reaction to it all...but then again, they were surprised to find a sailboat.
So, no I don't think they know how/when Desmond got there.
Amber the Hun 04-12-2007, 01:02 AM Just for clarification - do you mean do they know that he exists, or do they know about his "powers"?

Existence - sorry for the confusion!
silverlegend 04-12-2007, 01:20 AM Does Desmond really exist? I think that is a valid question too right now. I don't mean "is he really a person", but I do mean, is he a part of the same linear world as the rest of the Losties? Or did something happen to Desmond at some point in his life (perhaps because of Dharma) that resulted in him being interlaced with the island in an even more unnatural way?
I don't know... I can't exactly describe where I'm getting at. It's just an inkling. But I think that "Does Desmond exist?" is as valid a question as "Do the Others know Desmond exists?"
What Would Jeff Do 04-12-2007, 01:31 AM What does this haveto dowith "One of Us?" It has been discussed at length in other forums.
Selene1212 04-12-2007, 01:53 AM I think, after the shots toward the end with Juliet gazing for an extra long time at Desmond that they definately know about him. To what extent, I don't know.
dmchez 04-12-2007, 02:01 AM They more than likely have seen him from the Pearl station but it's unlikely that they know who he is or how he got there. Unless Kelvin was an"Other" and informed them of him. Since they didn't know about the sailboat, I would say they know he exists but didn't or dont know who he is or what his background is.
lostlocke 04-12-2007, 09:03 AM I can't help but remember the fact that they know EVERYTHING that goes on with the survivors and they know their whole life histories. I believe that most likely they know about Desmond. In my heart I hope they don't, it would just make for a better story and it'll show that even the others are flawed and can miss some things that go on.
Captain_Falafel 04-12-2007, 09:25 AM I think they must know about Desmonds existance. I've a feeling they don't know about his powers though - and THAT could be the Lostees advantage over Juliet. If Desmond sees what he plan is he can throw a spanner in the works.
Luna_02 04-12-2007, 09:32 AM If the Others know Desmond exists, do they know that Penny seems to be making progress in finding the island? Wouldn't this be a major concern to them?

Juliet gazed at him for awhile in "One of Us"
We also saw in this episode that Mikhail and Richard must have played large role in collecting info about the plane survivors, as Mikhail was reviewing the news about it at the comm station and Richard was back in the States. Seeing as Desmond crashed on the island alone and Ben didn't know about the sailboat, I think its a valid question, even now.
I don't believe the other forums discussed items shown in "One of Us"

I noticed this too - at the end of the eppy she was looking around at the various survivors doing their things, and she kind of paused and had an odd expression when she looked at Desmond.
What's up with that?

BillToons 04-12-2007, 02:06 PM Desmond is flying under the radar. This is a good thing for him and the losties. If they knew he could fortell the future I'd think they'd have scooped him up long ago. So fas as I can tell the others have never even mentioned his name.
Charlie 04-12-2007, 02:12 PM Hm, this is a very good question and I am slightly on the fence about it. However, I'm leaning toward thinking that Desmond is the Island's new secret weapon against Dharma. Locke may have been the first, the One, but he slipped off the path it appears. Now, at least "for" now, it is Desmond.
LadyJ27 04-12-2007, 02:36 PM These would be the criteria for each answer (imo):
Yes - Pearl station was monitoring the Swan. For how long before Ben/Tom/Juliet were watching Jack & Co., we don't know, still left to answer. We don't know if they were watching as far back as Desmond/Kelvin/Radzinksy. This is the only possible way I could believe the Others know about Desmond's existence.
No - Desmond arrived alone, no news reports for Mikhail to track down, no subsequent name for Ben's right-hand man Richard to research. Ben didn't know about the Sailboat.
Juliet muttered, "this place gives me the creeps" to Ben while watching Jack in the Pearl (Expose), leading me to believe they weren't watching as far back as Desmond's time in the Swan (at least, not Juliet, since we know she arrived on the island at roughly the same time as Desmond anyway).
Something to consider: When Kate found the airtube canister pile in LTDA, she read, "S.R. moves ping-pong table again," possible referring to Radzinsky, Kelvin's old roomie. If the canister is referring to him specifically, what can we assume? People (Dharma or Others, who knows) were watching and writing in these canisters, but why did the airlock tube lead to an open field? What was the point of observing? Who, specifically, was observing?
Ugh... this pile always puzzled me. Add in the question of Desmond and my brain hurts :frown:
Lost_in_CA 04-12-2007, 02:44 PM Existence - sorry for the confusion!
Ah, I thought you meant his "powers" so I voted no. I do think they know he has been on the island since they could see the Swan via the Pearl.
I think Desmond is the wild card in all this. He's not one of them, imo, but he'll be the one to bring about change. Or maybe I am just wishful thinking because I miss seeing him in action. I need more than just the vague glimpses and few clips of him
