Oh, funny! I had no idea! Nice homage by TPTB. Should we read more into it than that?

How about this, from Wikipedia...

"The Flashes of Two Worlds"

The Flash also introduced a much-imitated plot device into superhero comics when it was
revealed that Garrick and Allen existed on fictional parallel worlds. Their powers
allowed them to cross the dimensional boundary between worlds, and the men became good friends. The Flash of Two Worlds (The Flash vol.1 #123) was the first crossover in which a Golden Age character met a Silver Age character. Soon, there were crossovers between the entire Justice League and the Justice Society; their respective teams began an annual get-together which endured from the early 1960s until the mid-1980s.

Some hints here? Here is a link to the comics where they had a race.

In one it was for charity like what was mentioned in this episode.

That's Kewl!! Must have some comic/Marvel lovers for writers!!

It reminded me of the old "Cavemen vs. Astronauts" argument Spike and Angel always had!!!

ok, i'm just thinking out loud here....

Desmond episode.....lots of Flashes, forward and back.....and Desmond saving charlie's life, again. The Flash and Superman are talked about....they both kinda almost mirror Desmond?

Like The Flash, Desmond is always running......running in the stadium, then running away from people - Ruth and Penny, running from his problems.

Like Superman, Desmond is saving lives.....Claire, Charlie (x4), not too mention pretty much everyone on the island when he blew the hatch (although i guess that's debatable)

Makes me wonder....... Is Desmond a Superhero?

I know it's a stupid question, and i'm pretty sure he is not a superhero,
but i just figured i'd mention the similarities.

eta: after reading that, i can't help but laugh at myself

Dr. Marks observation: The FLASH vs. SUPERMAN chatter was (to my ears) also similar to THE LITTLE RASCALS episode where there's a discussion of: "Who's stronger Tarzan) or Flash Gordon?" More here: www.4alfalfa.com/Commentary/weep.html (http://www.4alfalfa.com/Commentary/weep.html)

Anybody ever read how the Flash died?

He was going too fast and end it up going back in time. It's in the DC mini-series "Crisis on infinite earths" He died in issue #8 but throughout the first few issues he would just appear for a second then dissapear. Then in issue 8 you find out that all along he was going back in time. Very cool story

here's a better description: After freeing himself from the Anti-Monitor’s prison, Barry kidnaps the Psycho-Pirate and forces him to use his powers on the minions of the Anti-Monitor, causing them to rebel against him. Using his super-speed to destroy the anti-matter cannon that was the Anti-Monitor’s weapon, Barry gives his life in his process. In doing so, he transcends time briefly, and appears both in flashbacks and flashforwards.

Finally there was something on LOST my husband could relate to! And I just love the banter between Hurley & Charlie -- they are so funny.

Interesting!

So many comic book references - such nerd writers!!

Hurley is obviously a big Flash fan, since the comic he was reading on the plane (walt's on the island) was a Flash.

Oh, and DC sure can milk a storyline!

I thought the Flash/Superman was kinda reflected in Sawyer and Jack's ping-pong game. Sawyer said "finally, something I can beat you at", it struck me that Jack does have this infallible persona(Superman), whereas Sawyer's is inherently flawed but does have limited qualities(The Flash).

I am with Hurley, Flash would win. Sort of would suck for Flash if superman beat him because speed is the flashes only skill

In the movie Stand By Me they also had a similar discussion... I think it was about Mighty Mouse and Superman

Off topic but for the first 15 years of my life I thought I was superman.
Maybe that's my connection to 'lost'

What's also interesting is the premise behind that story when that happened. It basically involved multiple parallel realities.

The bad guy The Anti-Monitor was all about destroying these parallel universes/realities until his was the only one left. And what happened when one of the universes was about to perish. One of the portents was the sky turning purple.

Many "Flashes" in Lost....

Smokey Flashes the losties when he (apparently) scans their memories.

Desmonds Flashes when he is having his visions. Not to mention Flashes Before Your Eyes as an episode title.

The whole Sky turned purple thing. It has been previously discussed that the Incident may have been the so-called Vela Incident (sometimes known as the South Atlantic Flash). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Atlantic_Flash

The Hurley/Charlie race banter.

Don't forget, in the film "Catch me if you Can", Leonardo Decaprio's played Frank William Abagnale, Jr. One of the aliases Frank used was Barry Allen, the name of the Flash.

Don't know if there's an homage or a connection to the con artists in Lost, but Frank was a con artist in the film.

Hurley did say to Desmond "For a super power, yours pretty much sucks". And he did ask Des if he was going to turn into the Hulk.
Let's just hope that Des doesn't turn up wearing tights!

see, i knew while typing my post,
it was an awfully silly observation and conclusion,
i'm just glad someone addressed it, lol
for that i thank you Madge

and to make another connection to his Superhero-like qualities,
when asked why he pushes the button (think jack asked him),
his replied with something like, "Just saving the world, brotha"

Desmond = :super2:

If we have to see Kate in her panties, the least they could do is show us Desmond in tights!

Ha. Supa Des! Saving the world before bed time!

Well, Kelvin was the original guy to save they were saving the world, but Des did relate that to Jack. I really don't know much about comics, but they could be connecting him with a superhero just a bit.
