View Full Version : Jack and Sawyer playing ping pong!
lostnthesoutheast 04-19-2007, 12:41 AM So did everyone else love that scene as much as I did!?! It is so great to see these guys finally acting like friends! And I loved Sawyer's line about finally being able to beat Jack at something (essentially laughing about the fact that Jack usually comes out on top). It really shows how much Hurley has helped him. It seems that all of Sawyer's ego bs has gone by the way side. Too bad that Kate is still trying to play the guys against each other. But it appears that they both have her number and that they can rise above that crap! It's about time!!! Bravo!
jennylee27 04-19-2007, 12:52 AM I loved it to LnSE. Sawyer certainly had more mojo than when he played Hurley. Wonder where that came from? I do believe Sawyer has been changed, by his love for Kate and by the respect from people like Hurley he is beginning to feel that he deserves.
I agree, Kate seems to be the one who has to get her act together. But personally, I am heartwarmed to know that Sawyer be there for her, messed up and all.
GettinLost 04-19-2007, 12:56 AM Yeah, I liked the scene! But it reminds me of the calm before the storm... How everyone seems to be gtting along so great... Did you notice Kate and Jack's conversation about "life being normal" and her not "feeling like she has to run into the jungle"?? And how Jack just kinda said "wait and see".
It's nice to see them "seeming to be above" all the snarkiness that certainly could have occurred from what has gone on between the 3 of them, but it almost seems like Jack is waiting for Sawyer to "screw up". He seems to be a little too "nice" and to "accepting" of the "situation".
imaaronsmom 04-19-2007, 01:00 AM I loved the reference that Sawyer made in this scene where he said something about playing every 108 minutes.
ortiz34 04-19-2007, 01:00 AM i enjoyed the scene but really am not sure of its purpose yet, are they buddy buddy now, or were they feeling eachother out...
Sarah Mai 04-19-2007, 01:01 AM I totally agree. I love those two together.. even back when they weren't getting along they were entertaining! They show such different characters (that logically shouldn't get along) but they really work in their scenes together
emmadoggy 04-19-2007, 01:05 AM Yep, I loved Jack and Sawyer's interactions tonight too - and also their greeting on the beach last eppy. There certainly doesn't seem to much of the macho guy tension over who got the girl - they seem more friendly and at ease with each other than ever. Jack definitely doesn't appear to be heartbroken or miserable over Kate being with Sawyer. Doesn't look jealous in the least. If anything, I'd say he seems pretty happy and content to foster his interest in Juliet.
Now Kate, on the other hand.....ugh! Figure it out already!! When Sawyer questioned her about the night before and she immediately says, "It's not like that." I was thinking, "well, how exactly IS it then, Kate??!!" I like Kate a lot, but she's really frustrating me.
Back on topic though, after the tension of the group discussion about Juliet and the little stand-off between Jack and Sawyer, it was great to seem them be so chummy. I think you are absolutely right, JennyLee that Hurley really did have a big impact on Sawyer. It's like he finally feels he has some worth and value. It's great to see him breaking through those barriers and connecting with people. I love it!
LostGroupie 04-19-2007, 01:16 AM When Sawyer walked up to and said "Hey Doc, I don't know if you know this or not but there have been a few developments since you've been AWOL." I was thinking UH OH! and laughed when he brought out the ping pong paddles. I loved this whole scene. It was great.
GettinLost 04-19-2007, 01:21 AM I loved the reference that Sawyer made in this scene where he said something about playing every 108 minutes.
"If we don't play every 108 minutes the Island will blow up"!! That was the other funny line I loved from this episode!

Yeah, I though the same thing LG... I got a little "Uhhh..."
lostnthesoutheast 04-19-2007, 01:22 AM When Sawyer walked up to and said "Hey Doc, I don't know if you know this or not but there have been a few developments since you've been AWOL." I was thinking UH OH!
Me too!
I think Jack was thinking "oh great, here it comes".
I think that the ping pong paddles were a great surprise for everyone. And to think that Sawyer actually approached Kate first to see if Jack knew about them, because he didn't want to feel awkard about asking him to join him in a game. Too cute!!!
LostGroupie 04-19-2007, 01:32 AM . And to think that Sawyer actually approached Kate first to see if Jack knew about them, because he didn't want to feel awkard about asking him to join him in a game. Too cute!!!
I know... he's come such a long way. If he ends up dying I'll be really upset... but I'm one of the few that like the love triangle.
C_Lost 04-19-2007, 01:38 AM Kate is such a ho. Revenge sex with Sawyer just becasue she saw Jack talking to Juliet? What, will she go have sex with someone else now if she sees Sawyer apologize to Sun? Good eye by Sawyer to see through her crap, but I don't think he really cared, did he?
LostGroupie 04-19-2007, 01:45 AM Kate is such a ho. Revenge sex with Sawyer just becasue she saw Jack talking to Juliet? What, will she go have sex with someone else now if she sees Sawyer apologize to Sun? Good eye by Sawyer to see through her crap, but I don't think he really cared, did he?
I think he did care, he even looked a little hurt. He was letting Kate know that he knew what was going on. He genuinely has feelings for her.

Ahh to heck with Kate! For that matter the heck with the ping pong table. They are at the beach afterall, how about next week the guys take it to the next level and have a round of shirtless beach vollyball Top Gun style. Maybe they could recruit Jin, Desmond, and Sayid to play too!
A girl can dream..........
Seriously though, I only watch Lost for the mysteries! ;)
lostgurl 04-19-2007, 01:50 AM I liked the ping pong scene. Sawyer's game has improved since he's been playing with Hurley. Was it just me, or did Jack seem like there was something on his mind the whole time? He didn't seem himself.
TheDharmaIsOutThere 04-19-2007, 01:52 AM I know... he's come such a long way. If he ends up dying I'll be really upset... but I'm one of the few that like the love triangle.
I think Kate has been in love with Jack since the moment she met him, when he told her the angel hair pasta surgery story lol. My favorite character is behaving like a silly little tart with the revenge sex, but bless her heart she just won't go after what she really wants. She even told Sawyer not to talk when they had sex lol. He's got to know where her heart is. I can understand why so many people are fed up with the triangle, but I love it! I want to see her with Jack in the end though. And kicking lots of Otherbutt in the meantime. Even though she can't have the man she loves due to her own making, she can at least have hot sex with Sawyer in the meantime. I certainly don't feel sorry for her!

I want to see her with Jack too... he loves her... but understandably he is a little hurt. :frown:
TheDharmaIsOutThere 04-19-2007, 02:01 AM I want to see her with Jack too... he loves her... but understandably he is a little hurt. :frown:
Yes poor Jack is hurt :frown: and it hurts me too! But he has that same disease everyone else on the island has...the I can't say what I really want or how I really feel even though I want to because then everything would be resolved disease. I believe they will be together in the end. Kate will get shot or something and think she is going to die, and Jack will be trying to save her life...and Kate will say, "I behaved like a silly little tart but I loved you from the start!" and Jack will start to cry and they will kiss and then Kate will live....ahhh I would love it ;)
lostnthesoutheast 04-19-2007, 02:02 AM Okay, that is enough about Kate in this thread! :p No offense, but I don't want to debate the ships. I just want to appreciate the awesome fact that Sawyer and Jack finally respect each other enough to let bygones be bygones and be friends!
TheDharmaIsOutThere 04-19-2007, 02:04 AM Okay, that is enough about Kate in this thread. :p No offense, but I don't want to debate the ships. I just want to appreciate the awesome fact that Sawyer and Jack finally respect each other enough to let bygones be bygones and be friends!
Fair enough :) I loved the ping pong game too. And I LOVE Jack and Sawyer getting along and smiling and all that. I hated it in the beginning when they were always against each other. They found that ping pong table for a reason I tell you..and that was to make us all feel warm and fuzzy inside! Ahhh ping pong
ZoeWashburne 04-19-2007, 02:07 AM I love Jack and Sawyer scenes - they have scenes together. Their scene in Exodus when Sawyer tells Jack about his dad is one of my absolute favorites on Lost. So while I've been happy to have some Sawyer and Jack scenes in the past two episodes, I really just want the triangle to end so that source of tension will be gone between them.
And I get what you're saying, lostnthesoutheast, how you don't want this thread to be about Kate, but I don't know if that's really possible. The ping pong scene was all about Kate and Sawyer figuring out Kate's motivations, you know? But I too would really love some more scenes like that one in Exodus where we can just talk about Jack and Sawyer and not Kate too.
kitdavis 04-19-2007, 02:07 AM So did everyone else love that scene as much as I did!?! It is so great to see these guys finally acting like friends!
It's funny how different people see these things differently. I saw it as a form of competition /boasting over Kate. Sawyer's comment about beating Jack at something seemed like code. Also, it seemed that each point was won by whoever just made a corresponding point in the conversation.
I'll have to try to be clearer after I've watched it again.
1dimpleonly 04-19-2007, 02:07 AM Sawyer has changed. He is becoming a nice guy,...I would never have said that before. I loved the ping-pong game and Sawyer's comment about 108. He's developing a sense of humor that's not based on making fun of other people!
I do think Kate is behaving unfairly. She obviously loves Jack, or wants him, more than she wants Sawyer.
I actually felt sorry for Sawyer, when he realized that Kate was using him. One thing he did that I don't think he would have done in the past, is he kept playing ping-pong, and didn't hit Jack!
Jack is behaving very oddly. It's like he's been brainwashed!!!
TPTB better not be thinking of killing Sawyer off, like some have said!!! He's is adorable, and very easy on the eyes,...I wouldn't like the show as much without him.
Save The Humans 04-19-2007, 02:13 AM This and the campfire and the Superman/Flash argument were the best scenes--heck, the best things of the eppy!
Thank goodness the writers didn't mess up JuSt like they did so many of the other characters (and plots) tonight!

Well, I don't believe that Sawyer intended the conversation to be about her. I think his inviting Jack to play was nothing more than a jester of friendship. It was sort of a follow up to their last conversation, just before they were taken hostage, where Sawyer told Jack that he was about the closest thing he had to a friend on the island.

You are right, we clearly don't see eye to eye on this subject. So did you think that the hug between the guys last week also had some dark underlying motive?

I completely agree with you!!!

True, I agree that Sawyer's initial invitation wasn't Kate-related. It's just frustrating that everything between them has to become Kate-related. I just want them to be island buddies
lostnthesoutheast 04-19-2007, 02:23 AM I just want them to be island buddies
I think that they are on their way, at least for the time being!
Thank goodness the writers didn't mess up JuSt like they did so many of the other characters (and plots) tonight!
I felt for you tonight, STH :) .
Deadshot 04-19-2007, 03:54 AM As much as I liked this scene I think as another poster said this is the "calm before the storm".
lostnthesoutheast 04-19-2007, 02:18 PM As much as I liked this scene I think as another poster said this is the "calm before the storm".
Maybe. Of course that all depends on which spoilers you choose to believe. It could be just the start of things to come.
RamessesIX 04-19-2007, 02:20 PM It was a cute scene. But I'm a ping-pong player myself, and there's no way Jack would have played so well after 20+ years. The game is not nearly as easy as they make it look, especially with shoddy equipment. And no top- or side-spin? No one works the table angles? It looked like they were just batting the ball back and forth with the tape speeded up.
quizzical 04-19-2007, 02:23 PM The ping pong table seems to be the new way that Losties resolve their differences. Season 1, they just punched each other.
flyer61055 04-19-2007, 02:30 PM It could be too that Sawyer invited Jack to play ping pong because he's trying to read him, figure out what's going on with him, determine if that's the same Jack he got gagged and bound with on the dock a few weeks ago.
Jack does seem very subdued.
workingmom 04-19-2007, 02:33 PM True, I agree that Sawyer's initial invitation wasn't Kate-related. It's just frustrating that everything between them has to become Kate-related. I just want them to be island buddies
Well, Kate will always be between them to some extent. But I don't think either of them bears the other ill will about her. Jack has been hurt by Kate but he realizes it's not Sawyer's fault and doesn't seem to be holding it against him. (Even back at the Hydra station after seeing them together, he made sure both were set free.)
And Sawyer, by the end of the game, realizes that Kate came to him because she was upset about Jack. But it didn't seem to make Sawyer angry at Jack.
That's a mature attitude on both their parts. (If only Kate could learn some maturity, but no more on that in this thread.)
TheBeastIsMe 04-19-2007, 02:50 PM 1) Sawyer has changed and realized that (up until last night) someone might actually care about him.
2) Jack has finally gotten past trying to "fix" Kate.
Jack and Sawyer both know that the present calm can only last so long, they might as well enjoy it while they can. They have both put away the "hero" mantle, and were just trying to be "guys."
Love the JuSt! I'm still going with my Arthur/Lancelot analogy for the two, though:p
molly1977 04-19-2007, 02:52 PM Jack and Sawyer are both alpha-males. They are going to disagree and butt heads. However, they both were locked away by the Others, both care deeply for the same woman. Sometimes, the bond over certain experiences will bring people together. Even though Kate was a source of friction, they both recognize that the other cares for her and wants to see her safe and happy. Sawyer respects jack for that and vice versa. Also, Sawyer is becoming a better person (thanks to my man Hugo), and Jack is taking himself slightly less seriously. Maybe both of them realized that neither would win if they kept up their little battle of wills, so they decided to put that aside and just try to get along.
It was an awesome scene and it was good to see Sawyer finally beat Jack at something.
Deadshot 04-19-2007, 04:55 PM I think the summary by Vozzek over at Dark UFO put this best. That entire match was a metaphor for Kate. "finally something I can beat you at" Yet Jack wasn't even trying.
Hey_Freak 04-19-2007, 06:06 PM That entire match was a metaphor for Kate. "finally something I can beat you at" Yet Jack wasn't even trying.
That is a really interesting point. I think Sawyer thinks Kate and Jack have reached their own closure about Kate's choice, as in Kate's explained it all to Jack. Of course Sawyer would think this because Kate's comments about the cameras made it seem like, Kate found out from Jack he had seen them together. Of course she didn't, so Sawyer has no idea that there is so much left unsaid between Kate and Jack. That explains why Sawyer was so surprised at figuring out that Kate was using him. For once he thought he'd come out on top, in his rivalry with Jack for Kate's affection, and now that whole notion has been shaken up. That whole idea was played out with Sawyer's comment about beating Jack at something.
Pantalones 04-19-2007, 07:50 PM I think there was another purpose to that scene - to draw attention to the ping-pong table. I'd bet money that it's the panel that Kelvin had drawn the invisible map on. Might the parachutist have a black light in her backpack?
Quinch 04-19-2007, 08:38 PM Me too!
I think Jack was thinking "oh great, here it comes".
I think that the ping pong paddles were a great surprise for everyone. And to think that Sawyer actually approached Kate first to see if Jack knew about them, because he didn't want to feel awkard about asking him to join him in a game. Too cute!!!
No, he approached Kate to find out how things stood and then (when he knew it was 'out in the open' ) he wanted to get it on.
Perfectly understandable and consistent with normal life. Try not to read too much into things.
100%

Unless Radzinsky also drew his map on the ping pong table as well as the blast door, then .... no

I never thought of this, I'm going to have to re-watch that part and see if Sawyer seems to be boasting or not. He sure seemed mad after finding out about Jack and Kate's talk.
My favorite line was when Sawyer walked up to Jack and Juliet and said, "Are you two arguing over who's your favorite Other?"
workingmom 04-19-2007, 11:55 PM For Grey's Anatomy fans: It just struck me that their conversation about the previous evening was much like a scene in last season's Grey's, where Addison notices that McDreamy is upset with Meredith for some reason, and she asks Meredith point blank if she has been seeing Derek (this was while Derek/Addison were back together). She said no, she hadn't seen him since she found out he was married, and she has moved on and started dating the vet. A light bulb went off in Addison's head -- "Derek's jealous." I think the same light bulb went off in Sawyer's head. Not a good feeling for either one of them.
lonegunwoman 04-20-2007, 03:15 AM I didn't read any BIG meaning into this scene and I didn't think Sawyer was rubbing Jack's face in the Kate thing(& I was looking for that to happen).
It was a fun scene and imho the funniest line of the season was uttered by Sawyer, "We have to play ping pong every 108 minutes ..."
FUNNY!!! LMAO!
Save The Humans 04-20-2007, 04:03 AM I'm just sooooo :happy_bounce: that these two got to have scenes together! They play so well off each other, and the dynamics of their friend/antagonist relationship just keep getting better and better.
So we can spend a day on the beach watching JuSt playing a ping-pong match, followed by the Superman/Flash foot race, followed by another luau, followed by marshmallow-roasting while Jin tells ghost stories! Sounds good to me!
PapaThor 04-20-2007, 04:57 AM It was good to see Sawyer and Jack getting along. I liked the line
Sawyer said about "... which is your favorite Other?" My first thought
was that Sawyer had been reading our forum posts!
And it seems that Sawyer is a lefty. I think he is the only lefty on
the show. It might mean something or it might not.
All I know is that lefties are sometimes "gifted" in some way. And that
there is a disproportionate number of lefties in sanitariums compared
to the general population. That's just a bit o' trivia. (But it's true.)
Kitsume 04-20-2007, 06:11 AM Honestly, that was probably the best non-plot driven scene this season. We get to see a somewhat reformed Sawyer (who now represents everyone at the beach) have a heart to heart with Jack (who is the Other's rep at the beach) have fun.
This was our cue that the losties have re-integrated Jack and his blonde baggage back into the beach fold. However, no doubt, there is some bad blood both personal and situational. I really liked it to be honest.
lostnthesoutheast 04-20-2007, 12:18 PM No, he approached Kate to find out how things stood and then (when he knew it was 'out in the open' ) he wanted to get it on.

100%
Rude, rude, rude. Unless you are one of the writers, you really have no basis to assume that your opinion is anymore correct then mine.
100%

Sounds like a great plan to me! But don't forget to go crusin' in the dharma van too!
As far as I am concerned, it is these kinds of great scenes, the dharma van ride, the luau, the ping pong games, the camp fire ghost stories, etc. that are bringing back the awesome "we are all in this together, trying to make the best of a bad situation" kind of feeling from season 1. I love it! I know that the things to come have been rumored to be very dark, esspecially with the many deaths on the horizon, but am I really hoping that we will get more of these upbeat, bonding moments too!
dr_gonzo 04-20-2007, 02:12 PM i enjoyed the scene but really am not sure of its purpose yet, are they buddy buddy now, or were they feeling eachother out...
I think it was a passing of the torch ......symbolic , showing Sawyer taking his place as the dominant male ....and hopefully a great leader , mabey furthering theory's of a split camp James/Kate (beachies group ) VS Jack/Juliette (group back at otherville) ?
linerk 04-20-2007, 02:14 PM I loved the ping pong game but I think I will just get outta here cause I can't debate the Kacker triangle anymore....it's been done to death on almost every thread. There must be other things to talk about...
