Hey guys

What no one is mentioning is maybe the Girl died from the fall in the visions and because Desmond saved Charlie he also saved the girl

That would mean either Desmond now has 2 people to keep from dying or he actually passed the test by sacrificing what he thought was Penny to save Charlie.

the way des was acting, i would have been convinced he thought it was penny. i think him saving charlie somehow changed what happened in the outside world and the parachute girl changed from being penny to naomi. he knew it was a girl before it was made obvious to the viewers

I like that thought, but it may be because I'm looking at the whole situation through a Judeo-Christian lens, with "The Island" being the supreme being. In a biblical, Christian sense, Des would be rewarded for continually saving Charlie, and especially for sacrificing Penny for Charlie. However, maybe the "island" dogma dictates that Desmond is "sinning" for saving Charlie, and the parachutist not being Penny is his punishment.
Sorry if this seems unclear, but I hope I'm getting my point across.

I think that the Abraham/Issac sacrafice story holds true- and that des "passed" the test by sacraficing (what he thought was) Penny for Charlie.

That certainly is possible

But I like LLostie's thoughts too that maybe the forces testing desmond are not good. Kind of how the Locke said the island demanded Boone as a sacrifice..it may want charlie

The problem with us is we may be applying our correct sense of sacrifice to the shows creepy and distorted version of it.

BTW

Once again they pointed out Desmond was on the Island for 3 years--same as Juliet--which they also keep reminding us of. There has to be a reason they keep mentioning this.

I hate that Lost is pushed back an hour because by then i am well into a handful of beers and that makes it difficult to follow such a detailed-oriented show. Wow. It never occured to me about the Des/Juliet thing. Cool.

Still I dont buy the idea that had Des not saved Charlie someone else would have fallen from the sky or that person would have lived or died accordingly. I like that the writers are able to challenge us like this but that borders on near silliness IMHO. I mean who can keep up with that kind of logic? I dont mind being wrong but I wouldnt respect this subplot too well if that is the case.

I honestly don't think that anything changed accept Charlie living. I think Des saw a flash of Penny in his vision, and that's why he thought the parachutist was her. But the flash of Penny was out of place. It was from when he broke up with her, not from the island. Perhaps that flash was supposed to tell him that Penny was INVOLVED, but I don't think that they person who was already in the tree magically changed from Penny to someone else the moment he saved Charlie.

Plus, the scene in his vision of the body falling could have still been him cutting her down like he did anyway. I really think that, while DESMOND may think that Charlie living changed everything, that he is mistaken.

As ridiculously mundane as it may sound, perhaps Des saving Charlie led to the parachutist's survival simply because there were 3 people to hold the tarp for her to land in. If it had been just Hurley and Jin holding it on either side, wouldn't have been as good of a 'cushion' for her to fall on.

Possibly, but you can see Charlie holding the parachute in the flashbacks... so I think that rules this out?

Maybe she was saved just by the fact that without Charlie dying, they got to her a lot sooner. I'm assuming Charlie getting an arrow through the neck would have slowed them down some.....

Also, I'm in the camp that it was never Penny parachuting in, and that it wouldn't have been no matter what Desmond decided. That would imply his choices affect the past, not the future. That just seems to illogical to me, but just my two cents

first flashback ,Charlie gets killed by the arrow.second flashback ,Charlies saved and Desmond is anywhere to be found ....Maybe this is whats been happening all along in my opinion. The one who s supposed to die isnt actually Charlie, but Desmond! So hes been saving himself with all his deeds.;)
right?
