For the sake of Salvation for Desmond and the Losties, Desmond needs to trust in his flashbacks, and want to make that sacrifice to the Island. Once The Island sees that Desmond has enough faith to be willing to let someone close to him die for the greater good, than we will be seeing Penny crashing in to the Island instead of Naomi. If Desmond would have let all the sequences happen as they did in his preminition than the Island may have spared Charlie and would have given every Lostie the gift of Salvation.

Uh ok, but letting Charlie die so he could see Penny again was definitely not the chance to "let someone die for the greater good."
Ya know, I'm all for being selfless and trying to help people, but the idea that a person HAS to die for the greater good of all kinda makes me wanna vomit. I mean, it was OK when he turned the fail safe key and chose to be that sacrifce, but deciding that for another person? That's just gross.
Besides, I believe that whole God testing Abraham bit has more to do with the fact that Des must prove he would NOT kill another human being, even if God were to ask him. And I actually think Des passed that test better when he turned the fail safe key.

God never let Abraham sacrifice his only son, he just wanted to test his faith. Abraham did everything God instructed him to do, but at the very last moment God's hand removed Abraham's knife from his hand

I don't recall Charlie and Des being that close. Des seems to be the standoffish type, observing the core Losties rather than deeply integrating himself into them.
Now, no one on The Team is Christian, so we view Biblical stories in a different light than Anotheronebitesthedust appears to, but I think people are stretching to make a connection here. Plus, that would mean God and the Island are one in the same. Is that what people are proposing? Or is the Island just a poser?
I would have to say that in general, I agree with flashbackfan that deciding someone else has to die for you to see your ex-girlfriend is a bit icky. Plus, who says that Penny's arrival on the island means rescue or greater good in any way, shape, or form? It just reeks of plain old selfish to me.

I hope That Desmond will never do this. NO sacrifices to the Island.

oh,no. :( What is greater good could be if it will coast someone's life. It's a temptation. It comes NOT from GOd...
