View Full Version : Will Charlie ever trust Desmond again??
Captain_Falafel 04-19-2007, 09:35 AM I just have to express that I'm feeling so bad for Charlie now. I'm not just saying that as a Charlie fan. I'd feel bad for anyone in this situation. Charlie already has the universe trying to kill him and now the one man who has a chance of saving his life has come close to doing him in. I was so saddened to see Desmond betraying Charlie.
What is Charlie gonna do when Desmond comes to him with another vision? I don't think he will be able to trust Desmond after he lied to him and almost got him impaled on an arrow...but if he doesn't listen to Desmond?! That would be risky too.
Poor Charlie. I'm a depressed Chesmond fan today.
lostlocke 04-19-2007, 09:37 AM I think Charlie will be mad for a while, but what other options does he have really but to trust Desmond blindly? It would just be cutting off his nose to spite his face if he gave Desmond the cold shoulder and didn't listen to him anymore.
Captain_Falafel 04-19-2007, 09:43 AM Yeah, but the thing is now...when Desmond says "Charlie, I've had another vision. You need to do this, etc..." Charlie won't know for sure whether Desmond is leading him towards safety or leading him towards a bloody big arrow in his neck.
Admiral Erik Pressman 04-19-2007, 09:48 AM I feel bad for Charlie; but equally as bad for Desmond. Charlie's life is in jeopardy constantly, and now he can't be sure that Des will tell him the truth when he is at risk. But, on the other hand, in this episode Des was presented with he (seemingly) had to choose between Charlie and the love of his life. IMO nobody should, or should have to, decide whether to trade one person's life for another, especially your long-lost girlfriend.
Poor Des. Poor Charlie ;)
pacejunkie 04-19-2007, 09:51 AM Cheer up Cappy. Charlie won't trust Desmond again, but I think that will be precisely what will save him. For this cycle to stop, Desmond has to take a tremendous leap of faith and NOT intervene. That will never happen unless Charlie puts his foot down and says no matter what you think you saw, I have to follow my own path and do this. It will be an act of faith for both of them, and because death is really not Charlie's path, he will live and the cycle will stop. The test will be passed.
Desmond has been focusing on Charlie instead of following his own path, which is what the ring lady warned him against. Charlie is no different from the monastary, the army, the boat race, the hatch button. The man with the red shoes was supposed to die, it doesn't mean Charlie is supposed to die, that's not what Desmond's death visions mean.
Captain_Falafel 04-19-2007, 10:08 AM I dunno, pacy...you might be right.
But I really wanted to see a friendship between Desmond and Charlie. I'm worried that might have been ruined in this episode. Desmond just seems to resent Charlie now. Which annoys me because this situation isn't Charlies fault.
I really don't want to see Charlie turning against Desmond either, but he must be feeling really betrayed right now.
pacejunkie 04-19-2007, 10:13 AM Both men are under a LOT of stress. I can understand if their bond is frayed and it's hard to just be pals. I think it's very realistic that it would have come to this. It's also very necessary. It means this test is truly taxing and they are both reaching their breaking point. It will take something like that in order for them both to take the next crucial step. Desmond has to see a flash, tell Charlie about it and Charlie has to do the thing anyway. Up until now, neither man would ever consider such a thing, but the harder this gets for both of them, the closer they are to that decision. Charlie not being able to fully trust Desmond is a important element. The both have to put their faith elsewhere.
Just wanted to point out also that the original "Catch-22", the Abraham/Isaac story, comes from Genesis, Chapter 22.
I think Charlie will trust Desmond again as although Des intended to let Charlie die, he couldn't go through with it. When it was between Charlie and Penny, Desmond chose Charlie, that should generate a deep level of trust. Sure, Charlie's upset that Desmond was prepared to trade his life in order to see Penny, but should take comfort from the fact that Des couldn't go through with his plan.
Is Charlie expecting to be told about every vision Desmond has? They argued about the seabird, but now that Charlie knows about the visions will Des tell him everything?
